How to get stupid horn button to work on a Grant Steering wheel

I have a problem with the horn button for the Grant GT Steering wheel on my third gen. Everything went on fine, the steering wheel looks great. When I got to the horn I thought it would take a few minutes, I pushed it in so it would line up with the notches on the fiber. It just wouldn't fit, so I sanded the edges of the fiber just barely, now it keeps springing out. The part design is so stupid, not like the manufacturers couldn't have predicted it might possibly cause problems. :P I think whoever designed this was very dumb. I'd settle for screws on the front, as long as the thing works.

Anyways, I need to get this thing working b/c of inspection. Anyone have the same problem, is it possible to get it working without some ugly hack?

i think you screwed your self when you sanded the fiberiod disc . i installed one last week with no problem . all i can say is get another install kit and follow directions to the letter . good luck .

the directions that come with the adapter kit is not clear. after the adapter is slid on the shaft, you need to get the wire out, and the disc needs to be on before the bolts. put the wheel on and put the 3 bolts on. the aluminum sticker needs to be on the wheel too ( i know the directions didnt say that on mine. plug in the wire to the disc. the spring goes on next, then the horn button.

maybe, but looking around I see tons of people with the same problems. Do you think a MOMO horn would fit on the grant wheel. Been looking at the MOMO horns, they look like they actually work.

Re: How to get stupid horn button to work on a Grant Steering wheel

Thanks for the response.

No the wire is fine. I have the disk on and the wire plugged into the fiber disk. There's a spring I needed to tape on the cap. But when I try to slide the cap onto the fiber it didn't go on, even twisting it like hell. The notches all line up but it didn't slide left and right. I eventually unbolted and took the fiber off to see how well it would fit the cap, the fiber was too big. So I sanded the fiber a little bit on all sides and now is seems to be just a little too small, which is nuts because I barely sanded it at all.

Right now I'm trying to come up with an idea to fabricate a horn button or to get it to work without the cap falling off. Looking at the MOMO horns on the web, I was wondering if they would fit. Not going to buy one until I know for sure though.

The steering wheel is great, it's just the horn that's a pain in the ***.

btw the the wire works when the battery is plugged in. I'm just having trouble getting the mechanism together.

your factory wheel had a big spring that threaded on the shaft a little bit. thats what holds the disc off the wheel. if you dont use your spring its no going to work.

the cap pushes on then you turn it so it locks.

If your just trying to pass inspection wire up a button from radio shack and mount it to the wheel temporarily. That is until you get it fixed...

couple dollars and they let it slide... at least round my area.

LOL my dad looked at it and we painstakingly got it on, barely. I'm afraid it might fall off again but if it does I'll go with your suggestion haha

Thanks everyone for the replies. I wont be buying another grant steering wheel for my future cars. :P will consider other brans in the future.

Sorry for digging up a dead thread but I just had to answer this, as I had the same problem on a Non-Camaro install.

INSTALL - First thing the notches are for REMOVAL of the horn button...If you noticed, the logo/ indents on your horn button don't line up with the notches. If you have a plain button your probably doomed from the start.
Flip the button over and notice the large indents, these are stops to prevent the phenolic disk from going in too far. Right below that are small ****. These are what hold the button on and simply SNAP over the edge of the disk.

REMOVAL - Rotate the horn button to align the **** with the disk and gently pull off.

On the back of the S/W adapter make sure the contact pins don't interefere with the glob of solder left over from production...don't ask, I had to redo mine thanks to this.

The three bolts hold and align the horn assy. Don't over-torque these.
The center bolt/ nut holds the wheel on - torque that!

Disconnect your battery unless you want to annoy your neighbors or old lady.

Check which wire is power and use that for the horn button, also make sure the horn button spring is aligned with the center nut or bolt. I spread mine a little at the base to fit over the bolt ( Fox Mustang)

Hope this helps.

Re: How to get stupid horn button to work on a Grant Steering wheel

In my case inorder to get the cover to snap on I had to line it up properly and give it a tap with the palm of my hand.I heard a click when it snapped on. By the way make sure the female spade connector is on snug .I even used shrink tubing up to the top of the spade .Reason being it came off and just happened to land on the base creating a closed circuit and the horn went off. I had to pry the cover off and grab the wire from touching to shut it off.I was lucky and it happened in a parking lot. This is the wheel and install kit I have.It worked on it,yours may be a different cover.Make sure your tires are perfectly straight and your wheel perfectly straight while you do your installation.

Re: How to get stupid horn button to work on a Grant Steering wheel

Another old post I'm finding - See I do search... The wire with the spring is the WORST way of doing a horn in my life... Wouldn't lock, wouldn't lock and then that brittle sob broke inside, nuff to pull your hair out!!!
