Flowmaster 80 Series

I am looking to upgrade my exhaust system, mainly for sound but hp couldnt hurt. I originally thought I would just use glasspacks but they don't seem to fit into the system very well and theyre kinda cheap.

Does anyone have any experience with the Flowmaster 80 series? It seems like it fits perfectly into the system with like minimal modifications and $100 isnt too bad.

Re: Flowmaster 80 Series

Not much point in just getting the Flowmaster muffler. Get the whole catback. That way you get 3" intermediate to a 3" inlet. Then the dual 2.5" outlets.

Flowmasters are loud at idle and louder on the gas.
Hooker are quiet at idle and louder on the gas.

I'd say they're both the most popular aftermarket exhaust/mufflers.

Re: Flowmaster 80 Series

I have the Flowmaster American Thunder 3in.( 80 series muffler )cat back with a Magnaflow cat and I really like it. I always hear cars around town that have the Magnaflow muffler and it also sounds good. Kind of has a rumble to it. It Seems that the 80 series sounds a little different from car to car. ( all mufflers do because of different builds, etc.)Some complain about “drone”or a “hollow tone” to it .That has not been my experience. Setting drone and hollow tone aside that leaves use with the Flowmaster sound, nothing out there has a tone like it. It is there trademark and you ether love it or hate it. I will drive in my car with the stereo off and just listen to the car run. Thats the way I drive it most of the time. It would really suck if I could not hear the engine "with" the exhaust while in the cockpit . Go to you tube and listen to some videos of the different mufflers. Just punch in = Camaro ,and the name of the muffler you want to listen to.
Heres a page showing the Camaro,Flomaster 80 searies.= http://www.youtube.com/results?searc...o%2Cflowmaster

Re: Flowmaster 80 Series

I recently installed the flowmaster on my 88 iroc with the tpi 350, and i love it. I didnt buy the whole catback though because im not a fan of the big chrome tips sticking out the back of the camaro (to each his own). I ended up buying the dynaflow kit and also purchased the flowmaster (yes i know its only a 2.5" exhaust, but im not going into crazy prformance so i didnt worry too much about it, it was the only kit i could find with factory style turndows which was what i really wanted). I love the sound, but flowmaster is a "love it" or "hate it" sound, and ive always been partial to the sound of flowmasters. It gives a really nice (not overly loud) rumble at idle.. and it screams at WOT

Re: Flowmaster 80 Series

if you end up getting magnaflow, go for a full stainless steel catback. i like my flowmaster though. people seem to trash them a lot but mine sounds amazing.

Re: Flowmaster 80 Series

I really like my magnaflow 3" catback, has a nice refined yet aggressive sound with almost no droning while cruising, making it easy on the ears. The Flowmasters are known to drone and personally, I just think they sound hoarse. That and I hear that they really don't flow too well either (correct me if I'm wrong though). Here are a few vids I took of mine so you can hear for yourself:

Re: Flowmaster 80 Series

yes flowmaster doesnt flow as much exhaust as other mufflers, dynomax and magnaflow to be specific. But on most of our cars, that does not even matter

Re: Flowmaster 80 Series

I've had a Flowmaster 80 series on an 89 305 and a 2002 v6. The v8 never sufferend from any drone. It sounded nice, a little on the louder side.

They do eventually rust out, then the muffler will start to sound like crap.

Re: Flowmaster 80 Series

I've had both the Flowmaster American thunder kit and the Hooker Supercomp kit. The Hooker kit blows the Flowmaster away IMO. The Aerochamber mufflers flow very well, don't drone on the highway and have a nice deep growl to them.

I also run a pair of Aerochambers on my truck in a true dual config, sounds mean as hell.

Re: Flowmaster 80 Series

Loved my flowmaster 80 3" in/out in my application 13.5:1 compression 383, it was very loud, almost straight pipe loud. sounded awesome, but not street friendly. just swapped over to a magnaflow, still has a nice growl not quiet by any means (dont think I can get this beast quiet with all the force coming out) but its much more "streetable" sound wise.

Re: Flowmaster 80 Series

If you want more hp out of a muffler you need it to be a straight thru design such as magnaflow but the flowmaster is a restriction type muffler and will give some hp but its mainly for sound some help relieve backpresure wich is always good for flow and hp
