New Fuel Tank Advice Needed

I am in need for a new Fuel Tank for my 1990 Firebird Formula. I have found seemingly endless brands throughout a large price range. Is there any brand that is recommended or any brand that is STRICTLY NOT recommended? Please help me figure out which tank to order. Also... is there a certain vendor that you would recommend ordering the tank from that wouldn't overcharge on shipping? Thanks in advance.

Re: New Fuel Tank Advice Needed

The normal sources like Advance Auto, Autozone, etc, sell Spectra brand. I paid about twice what those places charge and bought from Classic Industries. Guess what they sent? Yup, same Spectra brand tank.

It fit. It's not perfect, and it takes some wiggling to get it in right. The neck never lined up just right, so it was always hard to put the gas cap on.

In the past, people have spoken of taking old tanks to radiator shops and having them refurbished. I have no knowledge on this process, but it sounds like it might be a better option.

The whole thread below is informative; but pay attention to "Dante93GTZ".

Hope this helps...

your best bet is to have your OEM gas tank cleaned, repaired and coated.many radiator shops are capable of doing this. the end result will be ,you have a tank better than new. you KNOW it will fit. and the coating they use is impervious to todays alcohol crap gas. I have had this done to mine and ,let me tell you. it was worth every penny! while you have it out its a good idea to replace the sending unit as well. good luck

I just did the same thing two weeks ago, I didn't like the prices I found for China crap. I looked here; http://www.car-part.com/ and found a already pulled spotless OEM for 75 bux.......

Doesn't the fourth gen plastic tank fit, offer larger capacity, a better fuel pickup that prevents starvation on hard cornering, and relocate all of the charcoal canister crap to the top of the tank? IIRC, all you had to do was thin the thirdgen straps to get it to fit properly.

I would like to hear from others that have actually made this mod, members, chime in!! does it actually fit without cutting/modding something? really? more capacity? does the tank sending unit play well with our stock gauge? what years work the best? which ones to stay away from? im interested to hear if all this is true. as the parts yards around here are full of 4th gen Camaros.

You asked about it back in 2012, dude.

And you were linked here:

Which had an addendum linked to here:

I paid no attention in 2012 to what you were doing. Google did, though, and it was one of the first search results. I will have a nice life.
