Re: ANNOUNCING GTA 17x9 MESH WHEEL SETS!!!!

Did ANYONE ever get a weight on these things?! Several folks have bought them but no one weighed them? What about brake clearance issues... Are there any? I'm weighing the pros and cons here between the two 3rd gen specific wheels vendors around here. I like the LOOK of these more but if there's a significant weight difference and they won't clear C5 brakes then I'm gonna have to go with the others. Btw, I'm looking to buy soon.

Re: ANNOUNCING GTA 17x9 MESH WHEEL SETS!!!!

I don't even own a scale. I don't think home scales are all that accurate under 30-40 pounds anyway. My car has stock brakes.

Oh and trust me, in real life you can really, really tell a difference between the 16s and 17s visually.

I asked this earlier and was told 24 lbs.

Hrmmm. That's just barely shy of the R15 copies in weight... However if brake clearance... Still unknown. Unless someone has upgraded brakes with these wheels. The R15's are known for the lack thereof.

Re: ANNOUNCING GTA 17x9 MESH WHEEL SETS!!!!

Well I jumped and got the gold ones. However I didnt find my wheel spacers in any of the packaging so that's rather disappointing. Tires will be arriving Thursday so this is all I currently have...

And weighing them on my bathroom scale they were 21.5 lbs

Re: ANNOUNCING GTA 17x9 MESH WHEEL SETS!!!!

I do beleive these should not be a problem for clearance. I know for the ROH wheels that were 9.5" wide they had a problem rubbing, so they needed to be spaced out 1/4" I thought these were 9" wide, so I would think they should be fine.

My spacers came in a separate box with the centers and lugnuts I ordered at the same time.

They only made one offset in order to save money. Spacers go on the front.

That is what I went with size wise. Be ready for the pain in the butt it is to tuck them and get the fronts to not rub in sharp turns. It was a challenge but I got it done.

I had to stay square for autocross or else the car would push real bad. You have to totally re-tune the suspension if you go un-square.

Yes they do need the 1/4" spacers up front. Wheel hoop would touch a flange on the front strut and the steering end link.

They do use the stock or OEM style center cap.

Can you elaborate some on the work (challenge) you had with that please?

Square is referring to front and back being the same dimensions I suppose? Interesting.. You'd also have to re-tune an setup tuned for un-square although using spacers to ultimately come out with the same wheel position?

I had to cut out the bumpstops and some of the metal and hammer everything like crazy. Ended up using 1 1/4 spacers with them also but that will depend on back spacing.

so you were saying that were the same tire sizes you're running and hence required mods that you discribed, with the 17" mesh wheels discussed in this thread?

The Hawk's GTA clones require no modding. The modding was for larger wheels that were stated in the post that are 11 inches wide with 315 35 17 tires

It's not really about the spacers. Having larger tires on the back makes the car have more traction in the rear than the front. That leads to understeer.

That makes sense.. so your statement of "square" was more referring to tire size (width) then I take it.

Both width and height. Raising the rear end of a car makes it understeer more.

Re: ANNOUNCING GTA 17x9 MESH WHEEL SETS!!!!

A modification I did have to make was on the spacers. The bevel on the hole for the hub was not big enough, so I did have to take a die grinder & dremel to the hole and flare it out more so that the spacer would lay flat on the rotor hub.

Re: ANNOUNCING GTA 17x9 MESH WHEEL SETS!!!!

God I could definitely consider a set of 18x9s or 18x9.5s. Hardly any good HPDE tires left in the 17x9 range. The Nitto NT05 275/40s are the best tire of the available bunch. And the 16x8's have even less choices.

Hate that I need a rim upgrade just to run some sticky tires. Direzza ZII Star Specs aren't available for 17x9's.

Square means running the exact same front and rear tire/rim combo.

Aka 17x9 275/40's on each corner.

Not square would be running say 275/40's up front and 315's out back.

Re: ANNOUNCING GTA 17x9 MESH WHEEL SETS!!!!

You know what really sucks? By the time they came out with these most of the good tires had moved on from the 17x9 sizes. All of the awesome sizes now require you to be with a 18" or 19" rim.

If I had a ton of money I'd throw a set of these on the GTA backed by Nitto NT05's or Conti DWs as the "daily driver" combo. I always loved the look of the stock crosslace rims.

That's what I get for being an early adopter! Oh well, I needed tires last year and wanted to move up in size.

Another reason why Hawk's needs to release these in 18"

Re: ANNOUNCING GTA 17x9 MESH WHEEL SETS!!!!

Found some interesting uses of GTA wheels... these are 16x8, but might be neat to try on the Hawks 17x9.

This one had the lips hand polished to a bright shine, repainted the center, and then used chrome center caps. The gold looks a little deeper than the photos posted here, but it's hard to tell with online photos:

Re: ANNOUNCING GTA 17x9 MESH WHEEL SETS!!!!

At that price I went ahead and ordered a gold set for my 1989 GTA. Probably the Nitto's 275 for the rear. Not sure on the front yet.
