CompCams Xtreme 282 Hyd Roller

Anyone running this cam part # 12-432-8? How did you like it? 230/236 duration at .050 and .510/.520 lift. 110 LSA.
CompCams tech says this is the one I want for limited track and mostly street. According to the AFR website, 491 hp, 501 lbft on a 383ci with AFR 190's.

I have that cam. I love it. It lopes real good. I can get mine to idle at 900 when its warm, but it almost sounds like a tractor then. With the rest of my combination it revs real quick, and pulls hard. If I could choose another one, I would go one size bigger. Car Craft built a 350 with AFR 190's, 850 carb, the next size bigger cam, and came up with 520hp. It was a little ways up in the rpm, and some work had to be done to make everything work together, but 520hp out of a 350 would suit me just fine.

I just bought that cam for my winter rebuild. It came pretty highly suggested by some of the "elder" members of the boards. I hope I get as good of results as I expect. I was going to step up to the 288 but after running some desktop dynos I thought the 282 would be better suited to my setup.

Doesn't #12-432-8 have a lift of .520/.540? That's what the SDPC catalog says.

On the Comp Cams website, it shows .510/.520 for both the 12-432-8, and the 08-432-8, which is what I have. The 08- is machined for a factory roller block.

Don't know yet engine is still sitting on the stand. Hopefully by the end of the month I can drop it in and come March make a couple of passes. I will say the speed shop that I had assemble the heads and do a little clean up on them were very impressed with them. They decided to carry them after seeing them. So hopefully that's a good thing.

So since I will be running a 383, do you all think I should go with the one step larger cam?

The more, the marrier. I think with a 383, AFR 190's, you could use the bigger cam, and not see any ill effects from it. Make sure you check the piston/valve clearance, and make sure the valvesprings will handle that much.

hey guys, whats up? I really really like this cam, the specs on it are extremely good for a street cam IMO. Hot rod just did a build up with that cam, and vortec heads on a 383 and 500hp!!!! Thats alot of power, ALOT. I have a 400 thats going in my bird, its still ont stand(waiting on tax return) The specs on this cam are what I was looking for in my engine. the 230/236@050, and the large adv. I thought it would give a broad power band. The problem I have is my 400 is not a roller block, and no matter how much I want to convert it, I can not afford to drop another grand in it to do so. I was looking at the 274xtreme cam for my 400 but wanted something with a bigger adv to raise the HP peak. Comp Cams recommended the 284xtreme, which IMO is way to big, the @050 stats on that are 240 or something huge like that.The car is gonna be a weekend driver, but very streetable. Hot rod did a test along time ago with that cam and sportsman II heads and got sh**** power IMO for it. Thats why I have never been impressed with those heads. They said they should have went with a smaller cam and made more power. I have seen vortec 350's with just as much power. Does anyone know of a hydraulic lifter cam that matches the 282xroller cam specs? or is it possible to have that grind in a flat tappet version? Thanks for info guys, I would like some opinons on this one. Listed below are the specs that my engine should have with the parts I have laying around my garage. Thanks again.

461 heads, 2.02/1.60, ported polished(would like to get better heads later on, AFR 220 or motown 383-400 heads, but thats not in the budget right now)
Edelbrock RPM/Weiand Stealth intake(i have both laying around)
ededlcock 750 carb
HEI, recurve kit
hooker SC/LT with 2.5 true dual's 2 chamber flows
TH700R4, stall that matches the cam, which is still undecided
3.42 posi at the time being, maybe 3.73 later on
any suggestions?

I too am building a 383. I chose the next cam up to go with AFR 195's. (236/242 with .520/.540 lift) I did however open the lobe seperation to 112, because my application is supercharged.

Was this at the rear wheels? ... cause thats what I'm gonna be looking for when I do a 383 naturally aspirated buildup if I decide to skip the turbo idea in 2 summers time. I want 450+ rear wheel HP, 450+ torque of course, 500 is better.. <grin> .. as is 500HP.. I was starting to think these were few & far between.. I guess I should spend some money and start buying/reading some magazine articles ... but I thought thats what you guys were for <grin> .. so we all don't have to spend $6 on a mag. Oh well, the things I will do for my car .. ..

the 500 was at the crank, that should get about 400-420 to the rear wheels depending on your running gear.

To put a roller cam in a non-roller block shouldn't be hard, or that expensive. The cam is about $250, roller lifters are about $250, and a bronze dist. gear is around $40. Check for cam walk, and make adjustments accordingly. Comp might sell roller cams for standard blocks, that have iron dist. drive gears, and not billet. This way you won't have to run a bronze gear. The 08-432-8 that I bought has an iron dist. gear, therfore I don't need to get a bronze one for the dist.
