HSR on my motor...

I read that a HSR is more geared for a heads/cam motor but what about slapping it on my motor?

It's a bone stock L98(internally) with a P1-SC. 138K miles on it, valve covers have never been off of the motor so it's as stock as stock can get. I might be able to get a complete HSR pretty cheap...what do you guys think? Is it worth the trouble? Would I be hurting performance?

Re: HSR on my motor...

HSR lets the motor breathe a bit better, might as well buy it cheap and slap it on.
I have one on my bone stock 305 and it made a difference.

Re: HSR on my motor...

How much did you have to cut into your stock hood? I'm not really thrilled about that part.

Re: HSR on my motor...

Do you have new poly engine mounts or even brand new rubber mounts?

I'm not sure if the trans am is much different than the camaros but I thought i read the firebirds have less clearance than the camaros. If you have older mounts that are sagging abit, you wont have to cut the hood too much. When i replaced my mounts with new poly bushings, the motor sat up alittle and i had to cut out alot of the underhood bracing to get it to fit. There was a spot that rubbed the throttle body that I couldnt clear, and it started to wear the aluminum off the TB. So it is abit taller than TPI, thats for sure.

Its much better tho than TPI. It flows alot and shifts power band up more. My L98 with stock TPI to HSR swap picked up over 4 tenths in the 1/4 and near 4mph. A blower car will see more gains I"m sure since you gain rpm peak from 4200-4500 with TPI to 4800-5200 with HSR

Re: HSR on my motor...

Screw it, I'm not going through that trouble of hacking up perfectly good hood just to hope it fits. I'm not getting a different hood either(keep the car 100% stock looking).

Oh well, I'll get a miniram when I build a motor for the car.

Thanks guys!

Re: HSR on my motor...

I like the stock hood myself on GTA's so i feel your pain there. SOme guys may chime in and say they have little clearance problems, some may say the opposite. Just depends i guess.

Could always mill the intake abit. Miniram is just soo expensive

could try the victor single plane efi and custom intake elbow. If done right you may beable to keep it lower than HSR. But thats iffy, my setup now is a good bit taller than the HSR is haha

Re: HSR on my motor...

Eh, I won't be building a motor anytime soon unless this one lets go. I'll just pass on it...I'm not looking to start shaving and modifying things just to get an intake to work...I don't have the time or patience for it right now.

Re: HSR on my motor...

I didn't have a stock hood on mine when I installed the HSR.
But here is a side shot looking over the fenders to give you an idea,

Re: HSR on my motor...

Yeah its the TB that pokes up into the hood. The stock air ducting set screw has to be moved to the underside as well

Re: HSR on my motor...

with hsr you need to cut off part of hood support on TB level, i have removed whole support and it is still stiff

best regards

I'm not worried about structural integrity, I'm not hacking up a perfectly good hood.

Re: HSR on my motor...

i had perfectly good Formula hood and so what ? i prefer to get power and few pounds of the front without loseing and stiffnes, not a big cost for extra power and better weight - for free, and this "mod" to be seen by others when hood is opened

I'd rather not hack up a hood  To each their own.

if done right its not really hacking up the hood. Its just bracing anyway, but if not done right then yeah its gonna be noticeable in there

Mill the intake or let me know where this good deal is so I can jump on it.

Guys,

Check this out - a stealthram modified that you can buy - made to clear a corvette hood. Solves the T/A problem. but you have to pay for it.

Tony like you said just get a miniram. Hell, I know of one for sale for like $800 (I think) if interested.

Re: HSR on my motor...

A HSR on an L98 with a supercharger would provide a big increase on the top end. I didn't have to do any hacking to get my hood to fit, my mounts were pretty low.

But plenty of people do it with newer mounts and without any external tells on the hood.

you can always box the sections you cut off the hood bracing as well.

i'm still looking for a good TA/GTA fiberglass replacement hood. i've seen a few firebird fiberglass replacement hoods but not sure on their fit, and then I'd have to put in the nostrils and vents which would probably be a pain.

I'd rather put a small cowl on the car (very small 1" at most), or a RA1 hood.
