For what its worth owner says car runs stronger with the ported SR/220/228 cam than it did with a box stock SR and the XFI 280.
Finishing up an SLP project soon to be done.

I'm kinda like weaselbeak. I've done some porting before, but I hate doing that tedious stuff. Luckily, I bought my SR from a member here on the boards, and did pretty much the exact same porting as you've done on yours, especially siamesing the runners and removing the dividers in the plenum. It was sweet to be able to buy one with that stuff already done! The one thing I'm jealous about with yours is it's polished all nice and pretty on the outside. Mine still has the raw, stock finish on the outside. Looks beautiful! I don't know how much of an improvement the porting made on mine because I never used it unported, but I can say it performs awesome!

If you're asking about mine, I'm just using the stock '89 '165 ECM with the MAF sensor. I had a custom chip programmed for it though using PCMforLess. Had the chip upgraded for 24 pound injectors, deleted VATS, EGR, speed limiter, etc. Had them use the Corvette ARAP bin file as the basis for the new tune. Also running a Comp XE series cam and AFR 190 heads. For a fast street car, I totally love the performance!

Its a royal pain, some of you know.
Fun starting them a relief when they are shipped out lol
The runners take an obscene amount of time, most of the pita factor is there .
On a 350 not sure anything more than maybe cutting the divider out of the box and mayyyybe removing some of the runner wall/shaping is fine...then get down and dirty in the rest of the runner/base. 383 or larger sure it all helps they need air
Not cheap either but still less than anything you could buy for the power gain.

BTW the XFI 280 went flat and lost lobes with 18k on it.

pat youre off to a good start.
Next time you pull the base (and your hair out ) go to town on the base itself all the way thruogh same with the runners themselves. Free power waiting to be had. Those bases are real restrictive. Runners are short but still could use some help

Hey, thanks for the advice Cuisinart! I didn't realize that an actual SR base is really still that restrictive! I've always figured it's gotta be quite a sight better than the factory base, even unported. But yeah, like I stated in my earlier post, my biggest problem is getting myself motivated to do any kind of porting! I did a thorough porting job on a set of factory 083 heads a couple of years ago, and that cured me of wanting to much porting on anything else! You know, I actually had a perfect opportunity to port the base just about a year ago. To get my CR up, I milled the crap outta my AFR's (went from 68cc down to 62cc), and it affected the sealing angle of my heads to intake base. I had used standard thickness intake gaskets, and about 6 months after putting the motor together, antifreeze started to leak out from the back corners of the manifold. Sooooo, I had to go through the headache of disassembling and reassembling a SR intake all over again so I could replace the base gaskets with a set that are .0250" instead of .0125", or whatever the standard thickness is. That woulda been a good time to do the porting, but alas, I was too damn lazy to bother. Yeah, I'll have to buy one of those expensive, 6 inch long carbide burr bits and do the base all the way through one of these days! Or I could always pay some place a small fortune to extrude-hone it.

Pat they are certainly better than stock but waaaay restrictive for a modern day head.
Thread in this sec with one finished a few weeks about pretty similar job
picked up 3 tenths + 3mph just in the 1/8 mi alone. Just gotta put in the time then your power is almost free. Say your AFRs are going 280cfm and your base max 240 poss. less with a runner on it, you get the idea.
Know that a siamese is just the start dont expect big gains from that alone;think it helps some but is given more credit for power than its due
Imo the big gains are in the time consuming path of working runners on both from end to end

Pat Hall.... Wow we have shared very similar cases. 355 SR 190's here. I too had my 190's milled to 62cc and ran into the engine smoking really bad but no water leak. Figured out the intake wasn't sealing so I had to use the thicker gaskets as well. I had the base, plenum and runners worked over at the same time some additional porting was done to the 190's. It's definitely attributed to some of the overall gains in my setup i'm sure!

Yeah, my machinist warned me at the time that the intake angle might be a bit off without machining that part of the heads back to the proper angle again after milling the decks down so much! I figured I'd take a chance and just try it out with regular thickness intake gaskets, and it actually stayed sealed for about 6 months, then the coolant leak appeared at the back corner of the intake on the driver's side. The extra thick gaskets seems to have cured the problem though, thank goodness. It sucked to have to dismantle and reassemble a Super Ram all over again! Lol. I was looking at your signature, and you're running a bit more cam, and definitely a higher rocker ratio. Right now I'm running the XR-269/112 LSA, which is basically one step down from your cam. However, I have a XR-276/112 LSA cam sitting on the workbench, and I've considered installing that cam. I'm also only running 1.5 rr's at the moment, and I'm probably gonna get a set of 1.6's. Whether I swap cams or not, I think I'll put 1.6's on with either cam. A little more valve lift is always a good thing! I also noticed you're running a T5. I ALMOST installed a Tremec TKO in mine. In fact, I've already got the TKO sitting on the garage floor, but I changed my mind at the last moment and just had my 700r4 gone through with one of Dana's Pro-Built kits and a 2600 stall. I always have a big mug of coffee on the way to work in the morning and decided I didn't want to be shifting all the time. Running 3.23's out back at the moment, and I'm considering going to 3.42's soon. I've been pretty happy with the way it performs with the current setup though. Mine isn't a total animal, but it does take a pretty serious car to shut me down! My best victory so far was laying to waste a 1997 "Special Edition" Supra Twin Turbo. That was on New Years Day. All the cops had gone to bed by that time of morning! Lol. We went from a dead stop to about 135 mph, and I had him by just about a full car length when we let out of it. Luckily I had my snow tires on at the time. If I woulda had my summer tires on, I probably would've just spun them to death! The snow tires hooked almost instantly and I took off like a shot! It'd probably be a bit more fun to drive if I put the 5 speed in, but the Pro-Built 700r4 works pretty damn sweet!

Wanted to note imo siamesing isnt worth anything with this last one I just completed. Did a whole bunch of A/B testing on the bench, long story short this particular one turned out well.....ZERO loss to a nice set of AFR heads.

My SR had a similar siamese job on it when I bought it, but a bit milder than yours. I never got to run it pre-ported though, so I couldn't say how much difference it actually made, if any. It pulls hard all the way from off idle to around 6K though. My upper plenum/runners area is ported real similar to yours, but I don't think really any porting was done to the base or lower part of the runners.

Pat one day when you get the zap do the base far as you can. Runners just port what you can siamesing Ive found isnt all its cracked up to be. I think it helps if the base hasnt been worked sheerly on shortening the entire runner
Latest one Ive done which will be up shortly shows theres no restriction at all from the runners strictly ported heavily....lots of flow bench time done, spent lots of time on members set of 190s also. plenty of before/after a/b testing mainly for attempting a 0 loss system which it now is. Interesting facts for some and old hat for others lol. Fun stuff

Ive never owned a SR just ported them
They dont look like fun I can tell you that but they sure work good
I know taking the TPI apart was a hate/hate relationship every time

Oh yeah, I definitely enjoy the perfomance of my SR, car runs awesome with it! As far as assembly/disassembly, a regular TPI setup takes a fraction of the time to do compared to the SR. I read up here on the forums the tips and tricks that other SR owners have posted, and a lot of that advice was a big help, such as slotting the ends of the upper runner/plenum bolts. Putting it together the 1st time took a while, but the 2nd time I probably knocked it out in half the time.
