Rare California IROC w/T-Tops (1 of 502)

Hello all. My father and I are currently in the process of restoring a 1985 red California IROC. I've been reading these boards a lot lately looking for information on what's best for our cars, and have just now been able to get some pictures taken and posted of the car. There is a lot of history tied up in this little red beast.

For those of you who don't know, the California IROCs were part of a special promotional package offered only in California (thus the name), which had the decals, stripe, and rear spoiler removed. Only 500 (or 502 - there are conflicting claims) were made...I've heard from one source 250 red/250 black, and Dave Sauro, who owns a black hardtop Cali, has been quoted as saying 400 red/100 black. This special delete package is signified with the RPO code 1C5 (one - not "I"). I have only seen a few California IROC pictures on the internet - I have yet to see another one with T-Tops.

Anyways, I'd just like to give everyone a big "Hi" and hope to see you around the boards!

If you have any questions about the car's authenticity, feel free to contact me either here or by e-mail. I've provided the RPO/VIN # for verification.

Wow... awesome car!

I didn't know California IROCs came with T-Tops.. cool..

I'm about 30 mins from Livermore, CA.. there's a group of IROCs that meet-up in Pleasanton, CA each month to hang out, take pictures and talk.. maybe u'd be interested in making an appearance at one sometime?

Hey, clean looking car. I didn't know of any "california" irocs n such, but im not a major guru. If you didn't tell me that, I would just say you removed the spoiler and hood.

Looks good though

Hi Adam,
Welcome to the site, was that your car on ebay a couple weeks ago? I also have one of these California Irocs, but I dont think you want to see a pic of mine. I am hopeing to start bringing it back from the dead to its original form soon. It was a Black one that rolled off the line a few #s away from Daves car. Unfornately, it is going to be quite a project because the car is now blue, had aftermarket or dealer installed T-Tops put in and a spoiler mounted on the back.
The only reason I found out it was something rare was after reading info on this site, the flat hood and how it used to be black had me curious and I got to checking #s and it does have the 1C5 option code.
I am just trying to figure out if these are going to be desireable and worth something someday before I start going crazy with it.

nikh, so far we've had the original transmission and engine both rebuilt (bored the engine out slightly, and put in a beefier camshaft) - both had about 230,000 miles on them, since the car was actually a commuter and is my current everyday driver. The tranny has about 5,000 on it now, and the engine has about 1,500. We also had the original shocks replaced with Delco Bilsteins (we've been told that Bilstein did the shocks for the car in the factory) less than 6 months ago.

The car does need a bit of body work. There are lots of dings from people throwing their doors into mine in a parking lot, etc. It was stolen about 5 years ago and sat for 3 years before we (my dad and I - got to give credit where credit's due, he's been really helpful on this restoration!) got enough cash to get it ressurrected from the dead. Because of that, the weatherstripping around the doors got really tough and cracked...and on the driver's side has all but deteriorated into nothing (i'll take some pics - you guys will want to slap me!) So far we've got about 15,000 invested in the car...with $3,000 coming from the actual "ressurrection", $2,400 involved in the tranny rebuild/major tuneup involved...and another $4,000 for the engine rebuild. We don't know enough to do major jobs like that, and labor here in the San Francisco bay area isn't cheap! The paint is slightly faded - it's amazing that Meguiar's can still bring out the shine like that We've got about another $10,000 in body work (interior/exterior) to go before the beast looks truly cherry once more I can't wait!

T3am: I'd love to meet up, just send me an e-mail when the next one's coming up and I'll see if I can make it.

85TPI: Good luck! If you have any questions about the car's history, just ask...original parts, etc. I want to see some pics soon

Thanks all for the replies!

Is it me or does the front bumper and LF lower ground effect look like a different color than the LF fender? Other than that nice car man. Any interior pics?

I think that happens because of age, the urathane parts tend to fade or change color quicker than the paint on metal surfaces.

Yea, the color on the front bumper cover has faded, and now it doesn't quite match the rest of the car. Interior pics:

I would die to have the original leather on the steering wheel back...saw a wheel on ebay a week ago for $40. Should've snagged it

Oh yea, and I love the fact that my speedometer goes up to 85mph. What a joke.
