Here's pics of mine that I found on Ebay for $2,500. It was real nice inside, with only two minor dings in the door and shotty paint. It had great rubber, new brakes, radiator, belts, hoses, AC was updated to non-freon stuff, all power windows/locks/etc. It still needs paint, but that's going to be pretty easy later this summer once I can get some rain-less weather for cure time...

if you're willing to put in a little work, you can get something that won't look too bad, and will have some decent power. i bought my 85 trans am for $1,000. it has the 305ho, which is like 190-195 horsepower. i'm swapping in a 350, but if my budget were tighter, it only needed a little carb work to run really good. i'm completely replacing the interior, but once again, i could've gotten away with new seat covers and a real good scrubbing. as far as exterior, it needs a new hood, it has a few dents and scratches, but it has no rust at all. i've already got a few grand spent on the car, but if i really needed to, i could've turned it into a pretty decent daily driver for under 2 grand.

thanks, the 305ho is weak compared to the 350 i'm dropping in, but at least you won't look like a complete loser when a civic with an intake and exhaust takes you in your v6 bird.

Here is my $1700 88 Formula V8 TPI that I bought last week.

I had to get rid of the stock lights since I though they were ugly,

It had an all grey interior, but I am changing it to black,

Here is my 86 Trans Am that has an LT1,

if ya look around, these fast ones are everywhere. third gens are in a terrible lull right now. what i mean is this, they are too old to be new to build value that way, and they are too new to be classics and build value that way. so now is the time to buy. i got my 1989 IROC for 1800. she has the TPI 305 (the 220 horse one, and yes she IS fast, i've only lost one race to a HEAVILY MODIFIED Nova which i had NO PROBLEM losing to!) with the 5-speed. if you DO get a 305, get ONLY this combo, it is a winner and i have already put my friend's 88 IROC 350 in it's place (in my rearview.) so son't settle for anything less. you want the TPI 305 with the 5-speed (preferrably 1989, the most powerful factory year, unless ya go for the 90-up SD cars, mine IS SD since she has been converted). the reason for this being a desirable combo is this, with the 5-speed the LB9 (305) has the L98 cam in it (yep, thats the 'Vette cam, also the TPI 350 cam) and seems to work better with the TPI out of the box (i mean factory stock people). i've had three F-bodies (92 RS, '87 Formula, '89 IROC) and i am sold on the 305/5-speed combo. it has some weak points (the T5, DO NOT speedshift this tranny! if you do, it will SPEED**** on you! also, NEVER dump the clutch in REVERSE. my friend did this and his tranny went KABLEWY the FIRST time!) but all in all it is an AWESOME combo. don't listen to all the "350 is superior" hype. it is mostly BS. the 350's respond to mods better, but bang for your buck stock you want the 305/5-speed cars (unless you find a REALLY good 1LE car, not on your budget though!). i dont mean the LG4 5 speed, i mean the LB9 5-speed ONLY. possibly the L69 5-speed, but STAY CLEAR of the LGWhore. thats my $.02 people!!

try sayin that 5 times fast!
Josh

Just look around. You can find fast cars in good shape for a decent price.

Check out my $2500 IROC. Sure its a LB9 auto and a 86, the runt of the litter, but coming from a v6, there is a big difference.

Yeah I only paid $2500 for my camaro. This was after the guy I bought it from put in a new headliner, got the engine running and running good, redid the front end and put brakes and tires all around.

I used my WS6 plates just to go pick the car up and drive it home.
The car was about 2 miles form my house and I didn't want to drive with no tags.
I've got 60 day tags on the car now, waiting for my personalized plates to arrive.

first off, your book is wrong. the Camaros do breathe a lot better than the Firebirds, which does make them usually faster, but the figures in your book are wrong. there wasn't even a 350 with those numbers from 82-92! let alone a 305. the 305 i speak of should have anywhere from 200-230 horsepower, and should run about a mid to low 14 when properly tuned/modded and driven right. your friend's is a totally different animal. it is the anemic (sorry, not makin fun of him, i use to have one.) LO3 TBI (throttle body injection, A.K.A.-same as is used on the TRUCK motors) and only has 170 hp out of the box. with mods i have seen them in the high 14's though. but most the time they hang around in the low 15's bracket...

I didnt read your whole thread but here is what i gathered from the first post. this is your first car, it looks good but its got a v6. big deal. u dont need anything more then a v6 right now at this point. enjoy the good gas mileage and lower insurance on the v6 for a few years. im in the same boat, im 18 and just got a v6 firebird althought it doesnt look as nice as yours, paint is bad on the roof and bumpers but interior is almost perfect. its a good car to learn how the fbody's are put together and if your serious as i am about fbody's i rather have a "begineer v6" that i wont be too disappointed if i screw something up on it then ruining my dream car. i will eventually sell this car most likely or completely tear it apart for a v8 swap and overall upgrades, havent decided yet. im not sure about the 2.8 but my 3.1 can move out of its own way pretty well. it wont win races but its a lot of fun to drive with just enough torque to slide around corners and the very occasional burnout. i got a real nice sounded exhaust on it, and it sounds great for a 6. overall the v6 thirdgens are a good car to start out with and arent USUALY abused as much as the v8 versions, unless of course your the second guy thats had it as a "beginer" car

i just re-read your first post and u didnt really mention if this was your first car. good chance it is, but if its not sorry that i just went on about all that for no reason

anyway pics of my bird here

sounds like your v6 has problems tho. a good running v6 can scurry along well. sucks about the knock, that probably wont turn out for the best
