Re: SportCoupe guys come in!

I did a rattle can job on the hood about 20 years ago due to cracking in the factory paint, but the rest of the car is the original bright blue metallic. No two tone on this one.

How about that for twins!? This is a pic of my first car, my 85 Sport Coupe racing the thunderous 2.8L way back in 1998

Re: SportCoupe guys come in!

Thinking about making my G92 IROC into a sport coupe. Its being redone anyway. I dig the clean lines and muscle look when the paint is nice and the wheels are right with a mean stance.

There's not a law against this is there??

Lol - I know it seems backwards, but if the twin can have a good handling non gfx car, why can't we? Makes since when you think about it.

here is my challenge to all sportcoupe owners. provide pictures to let everyone know how good these things can look. i am in the middle of simplifying my car. these cars, if done right, can look like some of the meanest cars on the streets. very drag race looking. even the ones slammed to the ground with 17's look right. lets get these cars looking great! i will provide an updated picture of the car within the day. gotta get my parents camera. you can see in my sig how it looked about 2 months ago. my plans for the next month or two is to get a 3" cervini's cowl hood and get it as much prepped for paint as possible. what's your goals with your sportcoupes?

Complete overhaul: Carb'd and built LTX (not in yet), T56, complete Global West, BMR, and UMI suspension, 4th gen leather seats, etc.. Pet project it has come a long way from its 4 cyl and Saginaw 4 speed past, still has no rust and original paint. I am the second owner if I might add, I have to give the original owner a ride after the car is done (it was his first car).

It is the Harwood 6" Outlaw pin on, it has not been trimmed or fit yet just sitting on it. It fits well it just needs the shipping lips removed. For the car wieght I am looking at 3200 with me in it. We had another '82 sport coupe that held a bunch of SS records in the mid 90's that was about 3000 with the driver 6'6" 265lb. I will get some better ones soon, the weather has sucked recently.

sorry, i meant the weight of the hood.

When you say SS, do you mean "Super Stock", or "Stock Suspension"?

Yeah for sure. I failed to clarify it was not the inline 6 292. It was a really short stroke, short deck, and big bore 292 c.i. V8.

Re: SportCoupe guys come in!

The car originally had a new z/28 bumper when I got the car. It had the foglight switch, Luckily it had the parts service tag identifying it as a j-65 /T-96 car. I had already purchased a fog light grille from Weidner Chevrolet in 97( purchased that car in 2000) because I knew it would be hard to find later. $38.00, wish I would have bought 4 of them! I just love the Sports Coupes/ Berlinettas/LT Camaros with fog lamps. The parts tag matched the Vin, so I know that's what the car came with, so I got a the correct bumper from a junk yard and put it back as close to factory as I could.

What about the 85-86 Berlinetta front turn signals, I Know for a fact they are rare. I ordered the last 2 sets in the united states Oct98/ Feb99. Weidner Cheverolet Anderson IN.

Re: SportCoupe guys come in!

Bringing this one back!!!

Heres a pic of my new to me this spring '84 sc F41. Currently all stock with my Z28 rims. This car is to replace my '86 turbo 3.8l powered SC(pics also posted). That car ended up being too rotten to spend the money on fixing. I originally planned on swapping over the turbo 6, but now I'm building a carbed LS 5.3l for it. Not sure what I'm doing with the '86. Part of me wants to just go full bore into the '86 and replace all the rotten floors, and do a mini tub to get rid of the rotten rear tubs. I just can't bring myself to sell or scrap my first car!

Re: SportCoupe guys come in!

Hi,

How can I tell if my Camaro is a SPORTS COUPE and not a LT.

I do not have the original arm rest console to verify any more....

My third break light is mounted on the top of the rear hatch on the outside.

I have no tilt steering....the badging inside on the passenger side console is "CAMARO", It came with silver gm stock steel rims. The original colour is silver and a red stripes near the rockers with charcoal grey under them. No power window or doors. T-TOPS are not from factory they were made and cut by "C&C' Cars and Concepts. The gauge cluster was the needle for speedometer and gas...and just lights for heat, battery and oil. My shifter was a square *** and steering wheel has square pad in the middle.

thanks, curtis

Re: SportCoupe guys come in!

Great thread, can't believe I missed it all this time. My 84 SC has been in storage for a few years now, my dad was the original owner and dailied it from 84-05, and then passed it onto my as my first car. It's what got me started in f-bodies.

It's an original paint 2.8L, auto. Nothing special, but it means a lot to me.

I took it out of storage last summer for a couple days to exercise it a bit, and put it back. I've finished a few of my other projects since then, so I am hoping to get more time for it this coming season....Mostly just want to clean it up a bit and cruise around. I've got a nice set of Z28's with raised hollow white letter tires to throw on it.

Wish I had better pics, but this is all I have access to right now. Shot last summer with my 85 T/A.

Re: SportCoupe guys come in!

curtisbrun, to answer your questions, i believe you have a regular 1987 sportcoupe. the giveaway for me is the high mounted third brake light. in 1987, the third brake light was integrated into the center of the rear spoiler for all models...expect very basic sport coupes. this is an old thread with lots of dead links, but still has some excellent relevant information you may find useful:

recent picture of mine...yup back in the garage for updates

Re: SportCoupe guys come in!

MW66Nova, thank you for confirming that! for the longest time the insurance company had it marked as an LT....i had them change it to a SC a few years ago and changed my personalized license plate to match. I always that that if it was an LT...that i would at least have tilt steering and my car does not . thank you

Re: SportCoupe guys come in!

I would be a little apprehensive going by removable parts since the hood on yours is from a 91-92. Most people were swapping out the '86 rear hatch, others seemed to like them, but it's easy to do. The link to the LT thread should help a lot. I also have the following info from the Camaro White Book:

The 5th vin digit specified:
“1986: Berlinetta (S), and the sports coupe/Z28 (P)
1987: all model Camaros were (P)
1988: all model Camaros were (P). LT option and Z28 model were gone.”

While the Berlinetta designation was changed to LT, the specific VIN body code was eliminated.
White book lists an LT (B4E) as having:
1987: “Sports mirrors, custom interior, accent striping, deluxe luggage compartment, and locking storage, auxiliary lighting, soft ride suspension, and full wheel covers.”
Says 794 built w/ four different LT packages.

1987: “LT was not a separate model but was an option for sport coupe models, just as IROC was an option for Z28 models.”

Going by the above list and some from what I recall about the Berlinetta:
  • Custom interior: meant carpeted panels. Berlinettas also sometimes had a much thicker floor padding(black rubber over 1/2” thick).
  • Deluxe luggage: trunk cover w/ lock, ...a hinged flat panel w/ the rear trunk interior piece having a shelf to accept the panel. A more permanent indicator would be the hinge attachment welded to the far side of the trunk opening.
  • Soft ride suspension: may be indicated by part number on front springs (if original). Also complicated if originally a V6.
Not sure if auxiliary lighting means fog lights but yours appears to have them. That's really cool.

One option you may have (if the seats/carpet are original) is finding the build sheet. I forgot what is actually on them but if you can find it, it may help. I found one in the springs of the front seat but that's not the only place they're found.
With there being four packages, I'm not sure if the tilt steering matters. My Berlinetta came with manual windows and locks. It does have tilt though but a very specific column making variations more costly.

Reason for posting is, I'm not sure why you want insurance designated as a sport coupe since Berlinettas (luxury version) bare a higher value than standard coupes. Not sure if LT follows along since they aren't VIN specific. Either way from the White Book, an LT is not only a sport coupe by default, it appears to be much less common with better options imo.

Re: SportCoupe guys come in!

Thanks for the info Scorpner,

My car comes with factory fog lamps and switch.
No "lt" badging's inside the car or carpeted panels, all plastic.
No deluxe luggage or trunk cover with lock
Mine was a original MFI 2.8lt V6, gutless engine....350 small block is great!
First owner was a lady and then my cousin had it for 6 mths then it was mine, i know he didn't modify anything with it. I doubt the female owner did either. I bought it for 1000$ and its now worth 12 995$ canadian. Its my first car, had it since 1999. I think my son one day will own it LOL.

I've had a lot of work done to it, new drivetrain. I like the 91-92 hoods so i got one at a good deal and i found the 16 inch iroc rims and had sanded them and polished and painted them. Also i liked how the 85 tail lights look and thats what on it now...i still kept my 87 lights just in case. I will be going to led brake light bulbs and led fog lamps. Ive been having problems at night where my fog lamps just suck the amps out of my alternator, even though the alternator is new performance one since last year. apparently instead of a total of 8 amps combined that it sucks now, it will just be combined 1 amp once these new bulbs are put in, and should fit the stock fog lamp assembly.

Thanks for all the input, I am now more confident now then ever that its a SC and Im ok with that.

Yep, I agree. From what you're describing it doesn't sound like an LT either.

Re: SportCoupe guys come in!

I hope I dont get in trouble for posting this here, but my search for a clean sport coupe has been well over a year long journey now with no luck. Im looking for a clean 82-84 RED TTOP SC. I dont care if its a V6 or V8. Where once that might have been the most common car around, has definately changed. So if any of you SC guys know where one is, let me know please. I would be greatful.

I can't believe I've missed this thread, either.

Anyway, nice SC. Personally, I'd keep the steelie sport wheels.
