how can I restore the surface scratches on my windows?

I can get my windows crystal clear, but I still can't do nothing about the little circular scratches that seem to foul the appearance of most cars as old as mine. replacing all of my glass is out of the question.I've heard I can rub them out with a dremel moto-tool w/polishing disc & light abrassive compound.what kind of service can I expect from a glass shop/auto body shop, if I decide I don't want to attempt this?

This is what i did for this problem, it may work for you as well. You need to get your hands on some stuff slangly refered to as mechanics rouge, you will also need a dremel tool with a few polishing discs, it took me about 5 disks to do the windshield. without pressing down to hard, you want to apply the rouge and slowly polish the window, it may be better for you to go in straight lines, rather than circles to prevent any swirls-similar to that of buff marks in paint.

its the weekend now so go shopping, give it a try,

have a good weekend
hopethis helps

**glass shops will usually tell there is nothing they can do because it would take them to long te repair, and selling you a new windshield+ installation makes them alot more money

Eastwood (www.eastwoodcompany.com) carries a glass polishing kit. It cost around $33 for the kit.

Old thread here but I just went through this...

Our 91 RS had faint lines/scratches in it from the windshield wipers not being replaced on a regular basis. I bought a pound of cerium oxide and a dense felt or leather like 6" stick-on pad for my electric drill flat rubber sanding disk for about $17.00 delivered. This stuff is not expensive, folks!

It worked great, just take your time. Remember, though, that there is a difference between light surface scratches and gouges. If you can feel the scratch with your fingernail you might want to use a more aggressive compound first. Do a web search for cerium oxide and glass polishing.

Yep, JC Whitney too. The thing is, you can *easily* avoid one additional layer of mark-up. You are paying over twice the price at Eastwood and Whitney when you figure in the freight.

JC Whitney offers 8 ounces for $11.95 and that is more than I paid for 16 ounces (1lb).

I used to work in industrial chemical sales and that is the nature of much of the business: buy in bulk and put it in smaller packages at a substantial markup.

Excellent supplier of glass polishing supplies

Here is some info on glass polishing from the supplier I used. His service was excellent and hassle free. He sells 1lb of optical grade cerium oxide for $7.50. You will need a flat pad to apply it as well.

Whitney and Eastwood are excellent companies too but this guy knows his stuff and sells for a LOT less.

Polishing scratches out of glass:

Cerium oxide is the polish of choice for glass. Before you can polish scratches out of glass, you must first determine how deep the scratches are. If you can feel a scratch as you run your fingernail across it, the scratch is too deep to be polished out with cerium oxide. You must first grind the scratch out.

The grit used to grind out the scratch will depend on the depth of the scratch. It is best to use the finest grit you can to grind out a scratch. I suggest starting with 1200 grit. If that is too slow, go to 600 grit. However, after grinding with 600 grit, you will have to re-grind with 1200 or 3000 grit to remove the scratches from the coarser grit, before it can be polished with cerium oxide.

An easy way to grind out the scratches is to use diamond powder with olive oil as a lubricant. After grinding, carefully clean off the area you ground with alcohol before going to the next finer grit. Each grit should be used on a separate polishing pad. It's best to use an attachment on a drill, or an electric buffer.

Mix cerium oxide with water to create a slurry that's the same consistency as milk. Put the slurry on spinning buffing pad. Harder buffing pads made out of hard felt, or leather work best. The polishing action will be fastest when the cerium oxide is damp, but not dry, or runny wet. Fill a spray bottle with water and use it to keep the area you are polishing damp.

Glass is relatively easy to polish. Therefore, you don't need to use the more expensive 99.9% cerium. Instead, the less expensive 90% Optical grade will work fine.

Old post from the dead

Will any of this stuff damage anything around the cowl if it sits in there? I want to polish my windshield (which will still be on the car).

Have any other methods come out since this post?
