Pep Boys, Advance Auto, or Autozone should all have claybars. Buy the Mothers, stay away from Meguairs.

Man, the clay bars are an amazing thing... the first time I used on one my car, I literally heard all the crap coming off... did the whole car, waxed it... and never felt anything smoother, huge difference! Took a while though, because if you miss a spot, you will definitely be able to tell by touch...

Care to expand on this? Stay away from which Meguiar's clay? They make four different clay kits, two in the consumer line and two in their professional line. I've used various Meguiar's clay bars on everything from a 1932 Cadillac to a 1949 Plymouth to a 1992 Camaro to a 2004 Chrysler, always with great results. I've also used Zaino clay and Mother's clay, and when used properly they all work just fine. And "properly" means nothing more than keep it well lubricated, whether you use a quick detail spray or soapy water as a lube. I prefer using a quick detail spray because I don't have to wash again between the clay step and polish step since there's no worry about water spotting.

I've used 3 different Megiuars kits and every single one of them ends up leaving clay streaks all over my paint. You will find that most people have the same experience.

I've used the Mequiars clay on 2 cars last month and it worked great. I bought the kit at mequiars.com. I also used the Quick Detailer as the lube and just waxed the car afterwards for a great look.

I've used the Meguairs clay bar with great results every time. The people having problems must not be using it right.

Are you sure you're using enough lube, either quick detail spray or soapy water? Obviously "most people" do not have the same experience, but it is pretty common for one person to think a given car car product (often a polish) is pure crap while another person thinks it's the greatest they've ever used.

Axle/Gears: huh?? guessing stock.
Ive been using Megiuars for a number of years. used it on both my RX-7's the wifes saturn, my Eclipse, Stealth, and Im sure ill use it on my camaro once I get it painted and it needs it. I have never had issues with them. Always used the quick detailing spray as lube and never once gotten clay streaks.

It just removes stuff that is stuck to the paint. So it won't help faded paint at all. You'll need a polish for that.

Do you have any pictures of this faded paint? A polish will bring it back to life, but if it looks faded because the clear coat is failing then there isn't much you can do, short of a repaint.

Polishing by hand can be a real pain because you need to seriously work the polish in order for it to actually work. You don't just wipe it on, let it dry, then wipe off like a wax. You can try something like Meguiar's 3 step line, Meguiar's Color-X, or a polish from the Mother's line. For more serious work though you'd want to use something from Meg's professional line and at least a dual action buffer like the Porter Cable. Oh, never let a polish set up like a wax - it will be a royal pain in the butt to take off. You work it in and wipe it off before it dries. Wax after.

Clay Bars

Hey there. You can get clay bars from Pinnaclewax.com. I have used their products on my 89 Convertible and they work great. I would also recommend the Carnauba Finishing Glaze. My car has an original bright red finish and thes products really made the color much richer. You will not be dissappointed. Their number is 877-929-3100
