Just wondering if anyone has any good ideas on how to remove undercoating applied to an engine bay. The original ower of my car decided to have the engine bay undercoated to prevent rust and what not I guess. The fact is, after 16 years, the engine bay looks like a complete mess!!! I have tried getting it off by hand and elbow grease and its just not working out all that great. I want to use steam cleaning or a powerwashing to do the job, I just don't know if thats a good idea or not. Any suggestions?

Use varsol , minerspirits , paint thinner ,etc. Your best bet would be to use that stuff people use to clean contact cement off of things. Its almost like a laquer thinner. This for a fact I know works cause ive tried it. It also melts ashpalt when you spill it on the road lol.

Also depending on the undercoating and stuff I used a wire wheel on a 4" grinder.

Underneath the car, a small propane bottle and a scrapper works well, followed by thinner. I might have some misgivings, however, about using that method in the engine bay. I wonder if a heat gun would accomplish the same thing?
