clearcoat alone is also nice for those wanting that bright shiny new looking light. never understood why people wanted to go so dark with them. moderation is key.

same here, I ordered a can of each from the tower hobbies link b/c the hobbies stores around my house dont have jack. But I think I'm going to leave the red on there and wait a while before I spray the black (if I even do), b/c the only reason I really bought it was b/c it was cheap and since I was paying shipping charges anyway I might aswell add the extra $4 for the black as a "just to know I have it" reason.

I sanded down my lights today and put a few coats of the Testors paint on them. I went a little darker than I wanted to go but the orange peel is really bad. I don't know if maybe because it was kinda windy when I did it, if I didn't spray it right, or if the can has a crappy nozzle or what. I brought them inside to sit overnight before I try and do anything else. I need to wetsand them but I'm worried that 2000 grit will blow a hole through the paint. 1500 grit got the lights to where they could be painted really quick.

I got one can of the candle apple supposed to come in Tuesday. Not sure if I can do it next weekend or the weekend after. I most likely wont do the blackout until I get back from boot camp and tech school in October.

welp; most likley; depending on where u life; it was probably too cold for hte paint to dry properly

paint is very delicate in temparatures, and if too cols it will craze/orange peel/ etc
-i used a heat gun to heat the actual plastic to warm it up before each coat of red i put on the inside of the tail-lights;

just an idea

That's what the problem was. I was going to wait until I warmed up but I got my freshly painted bumper back yesterday and I didn't want to mess up the paint by having to take the taillights back off (and I hate taking the damn trunk apart to get the taillights out) so I just went ahead and did it. I'm going to fix them in the garage today with the heater on.

yea, try a heat gun if you have one; or even a womens Hair Dryer thing, jsut to heat the plastic up so the paint sticks to it well also;

and orange peel can also be caused by letting the paint dry for TOO long in between coats; so be careful of that too

First things first....Orange Peel is a natural characteristic of clearcoat. It will happen no matter what. Severity of it is a different story but no matter what, it will exist (at least with the kinds of clear you can legally use now without a special license). Clearcoats used back in the day dont get peel, but are not legal for the environment anymore.
Also, 2000 grit might start to **** you off to get rid of orange peel...just use 1500. get it to the point where its almost all dull and then buff it, and it will look like glass.

It wasn't really orange peel, there were curcular voids in the paint that looked similar to orange peel but it wasn't if that makes any sense. I tried painting them again yesterday an they looked better than the first time but still ended up looking like **** because I laid it on to thick becuase I was trying to get good coverage per coat rather man mist it on for a few likes like I need to do since this is so thin. So I'm going to go pick up another can and try it one more time, maybe the third time will work this time! If not I'll take it back off again and just plain clear coat the lights and be done with it.

Just so everyone knows, after the testors spray dries it isn't shiny like the first picture. It looks almost like Niteshades does. Hopefully the Duplicolor clear coat I'm going to put on with make them shiny.

Ive got to agree 2000 can get a lil bothersome if your tring to cut through a lot of peel. But you will have to do a hell of a lot of sanding to blow a hole in it. Sanding with 2000 is like using notebook paper to sand, very light grit. If your going to use 1500 just go easy as it will cut faster, Id stick to 2000.

I re-did my tails again today. I guess third time is the charm! They look really good. I did two thin coats and the tint is perfect and I didn't get runs this time! I'm going to go get the clearcoat and put it on tomarrow and I'll post up some pictures.

Just got the tails back on the car today, they look fantastic. I should have put one more coat of the black on them though. Here's how I did it:

I wet sanded the tails down with 400 grit wet or dry sand paper. Then I cleaned them and wiped them down with a tack cloth and then I sprayed on two light coats of the Testors Transparent Black Spray (I only needed one can). Then I let them sit overnight and then I put on 2 light coats of Duplicolor Acrylic Enamel clear coat (the premium formula, it's in a 12oz. black can that you can get an Autozone) and another coat a little thicker to top them off. In a few months after they've had time to cure I'll wax them with my PC. And now the pictures:

I think the tail lights look sweet dark. I think I'll try it when it gets warmer here. I'm going to match the 3rd brake light to the tail lights, I noticed nobody else is doing that. Any reason for that?

waht do you mean "match" ?? its already red ?

- those BFGoodrich tires are nice, i got a pair about 2 years ago, when they amde them for 16" rims, and before tehy discontinued them; they were only $95 ! and spped W rated, so tehy are stickier too! i wish they still made them for 16" rims tho...

By match I mean the tail lights get "tinted", but the 3rd brake light is untouched, as in still bright red. For example post #42, Mr.IROC's car, I love the tint on the tail lights, but the 3rd brake light needs to match IMO.

Ive been trying for like a hour to get me drivers side tail lamp off the car. I got the passenger sie off but there is something on the bottom thats got it stuck to the bumper. Plus the hole for the screw that is to the outside of the car is so small its having a problem going through doesnt help. Im so close to just smashing it with a hammer and getting a new lamp for it. Anyone get any ideas? Ive even tried to wedge something in between the bumper and lamp but that does no good either.

N/m just got it off finally. One of the clips at the bottom of the lense was getting held up on the bumper which somehow has a bubble in it. Very fustrating that was. Im sure I scratched my paint too.
