got my paint quote, and look what the guy asked me!

ok so he went and took the quote and stuff on my car, luckily i was working on my car at the time, (its sitting outside my friends machine shop) and the guy rolls up,
i talk to him a little, i took his daughter to prom, you know how it is.
well he starts to look my car over telling what he is looking for as he goes, then he tallies it all up,
and asks me if i really wanna put all that money into my car, and tells me he will give me the exact estimate tomorrow(which was today).
ok so i go to his office today to talk to him, and find out what he wants.
i knew i was gonna spend alot, because my car is gonna be a show car, and i am gonna advertise for him and stuff, and the greatest thing about him, he is ****. if its at all wrong he will strip it down and do it again.
ok so he asks me again "Do you really wanna put over half of the cars worth value into this paint job?" and since there are quite a few dents in my car, i was like yeah, i want my car perfect again. so he tells me: $3600.00 plus a new fender. and i was like "OK" and he didnt understand why i didnt fall out of my chair, he thought that was outrageous for my car.
and i explained to him what my car means to me, and what else i plan on doing, so $3600 isnt much compared to my all forged 350 short block that is in the design phase.
and the suspension work i plan on.
and then he understands, this isnt just a car, its my work of art! so he says, and then he tells me what i would have normally been charged by the company if he wasnt doing it on the side, it was $5000.00 and i about crapped then, i know the old saying YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR, but that is what i paid for my car.
oh well. he starts my car next fri. the 25th, and it will take him about 2 weeks ( or 4-5 nights) to finish it, i cant wait.

hey guys i just wanted to see what you guys thought your cars are worth to yourself, not to the blue book but YOURSELF, what would you do to make if perfect?

and tell me about your paint experiences!!

and guys i will definately post all the pics i can, when its done!!

Hey jay, My uncle does show cars and said for $5,000 my body would be perfect.

I paid $6,000 and actually turned down an offer of $7,000. If he would have said $9,000 I would be driving a 4th gen right now. But you got to keep at least one third gen in the family.

Yep, I've been there. I couldn't sell my car for a fraction of what I've put into it. The retail price of 5K doesn't sound bad to me, that is about the minimum for any real quality job, and it can really go up from there (I mean REALLY up). Sounds to me like you've found yourself a pretty good deal.

My paint story is kind of funny. A family member of mine who I'll keep ananymous backed my car up with the door open and bashed the door on the rock wall. The original paint was way bad anyway so I decided to paint the whole car. I called on Pontiac to pay for most the paint job on a recall. Well, they didn't want to do that (really???) and I took it to the regional level. This went on for a couple months and I wouldn't give up. Finally the regional manager flew out to look at my car and make a final judgement. Meanwhile my car has just been sitting in the corner of the body shop. They show up and the shop guys about faint because of what they did. They brought ultraviolet lights and microscopes (yes, real microscopes) and looked all over my car. The body shop said this had never happened before. The regional manager made one comment when it was all done. "It's obvious this guy really takes car of his car but I'm only paying for the hood." What could I do? Well, the body shop was pretty annoyed at the way Pontiac treated me and it just so happens that when the bill came in the hood cost a heck of a lot . Insurance paid for the door and my total out of pocket expense was $1100. Pretty cool! It still looks awesome 7 years later.

i think id pay 5 grand to make my TA perfect. unfortunatly ive blown 13 grand on the vette but itll be done this summer! probably another $2,000. i bet you guys are sick of hearin of my vette huh? well dont worry, the TA is the next project car. and i have no problem going upwards of 500 horsepower with it. (wana keep it kinda mild for the vette cuz more power often means easier to break or wreck.) to end my post i think id probably pay $10,000 to make the TA perfect. not all at once tho.

Well, I paid 1000 dollars for my '82 Z28. 2 weeks later I pulled the engine and spent around 1400 getting it going again. I did the body and paint work myself so that was probably around 400 bucks. Wish I had known about this website earlier, 'cause then I would have bought some 4th gen seats instead of having a shop redo the stockers for 780 bucks. (could have had enough money at the time to get a set of heads ) Looks good though, so I'm not complaining. All in all, I've probably got 3,000 into it after buying it not including a lot of little things. I haven't even started on the transmission, rearend and suspension upgrades lol

well, im not commenting on what ive got in my car, but from the best of my reckoning i would NEVER sell it..

If and only hypothetically as to how much i would want for it. well... I'd have to keep it realistic and say upwards of 20,000 or more.

as for body to be perfect.. if i had teh dough id say the 5 is great.

92 PURPLE RS: hey man i understand on not commenting, your car is very custom, LOOKS GREAT!! and custom may also mean expensive.

Blue502: hey your car looks great, i checked out your site, nice man. and i talked to a guy a month or two ago, and he had seen my car, and he said for it to be 100% smooth as glass 100% everything, it would cost him $9-10,000 and thats not anything special, just body work and paint. i almost fell, but i understood when he showed me his car.. OMG.

QwkTrip: well i hope no one in my family opens my door into a rock wall. but if they do they better get there running shoes on, becuase i am gonna beat them! and i just dont understand pontiac, and i am sorry your got screwed on that deal, KINDA.

86ws6TA: hey man when are we gonna see some pics also? even of the vette, it must be nice!

Evilcarman: hey man, lets see some pics also, i like the 82 Z's for some reason, they just look like a true race car(drag that is). and i know what you mean, i wish i would have known about this site also, i wouldnt have wasted the $1000 dollars i had after i bought my car, i dont even know what i spent it on, oh well, its only money and you cant take it with you!

thanks guys. you have made my decision feel better on spending my money. well the governments money. i love sign on bonuses and extra money for doing good on the ASFAB test to get into the military, thanks again.

I got mine from a buddy for $1000 and like a week later was offered $4000 by 2 different people, someone also wanted to trade a 2nd gen TA and sum little station wagon to me for it, then offered to throw in $1000 (while the tranny was shot). So I guess I aint got 2 say I'd never sell it.

almost 4 grand for a paint job?? damn thats a little high, it better be some top of the line ****. I just spent about 2 grand getting my 89 repainted to origional color and that was with NO bodywork, i kind of find it hard to justify almost 2 grand difference for some dents. Thats just me though, different guys will charge different prices but i must say my guy is not the typical maaco type guy, he goes one step further from extra laqur (spelling??) final wet sandint to get any imperfections out, hes a great guy and is worth every penny, now that i think about it i would pay big bucks for his work, good thing hes a family friend. Ill soon be in the same boat as u though man, u may have heard about my recent project, the 85 trans am 305 TPI factory bright yellow, basicly the cats *** of trans ams in 85 with a very rare color. I am going to have it done all solid yellow (includeing ground FX). Ill be dropping it off in a few weeks. Until then i will continue to bust my *** at work for a few more weeks until i have most of the money to have it done.

Yeah I know, but the next big thing is to put a 420 hp 350 in place of the slightly modded 305. Tires and rims may have to come before that though come to think of it. The rears are getting pretty bald now, did a little tuning up today with the new Holley hummm now you've sparked an idea to go look at rims! doh

Re: got my paint quote, and look what the guy asked me!

I only paid 700 for my 90 RS, but it was from my uncle's dealership so he cut the price as low as he could. After a week of cleaning it up and making it shine, a guy walks up to me while I'm getting gas and offers 4000 cash for it. I just smiled and shook my head. I don't think I'd ever sell this car, no matter how much it puts me through.
