Zaino - Clear coat finish

This must have been asked before but I could fine it.

I was thinking about trying some Zaino wax. They have the Z-2 for paint with a clear coat finish and the Z-3 for regular paint. My car is an 87 from the California plant, does it have a clear coat finish or not?

Also, why are these two products called a polish instead of a wax? Sould I be getting something different? Another thing, both the Z-2 and Z-3 said I needed to use them with the ZFX Flash Cure Accelerator. I'm confused, it sould like I need to by another one of their products and mix the two together, can anyone clarify?

Re: Zaino - Clear coat finish

Your car is a clear coat paint so you would use the Z-2.

As far as Zaino, not sure why they call it polish, as it behaves more like a wax, but claims it isn't. The ZFX is optional, not a necessity.

I personally use Mequiar's Gold Class wax twice a season. But prior to wax, I use a Meguiar's Swirl Remover, and #2 Polish.

Not sure if your car has a clear coat or not (i believe it does) but as far as the ZFX accelerator goes..... you basically add it to the polish and it eliminates the cure time to buff it off or for adding more coats of polish. If you dont want to spend all day on the car get the ZFX it will make the process faster. I use the ZFX and I like it

Re: Zaino - Clear coat finish

Save yourself the money and confusion and get the new Meguiar's NXT 2.0 - it's really awesome stuff and so far, far superior to the original NXT Tech Wax that if you hated the original this new version will amaze you.

Wash the car thoroughly first, clay it, and then apply the NXT 2.0 and let it haze for half an hour then buff it off. Apply another coat the next day. Ideally you should use a good paint cleaner/polish between claying and using the NXT 2.0 but if you aren't into it, so be it. I don't allow swirl marks on my car so I machine polish mine as needed.

Make sure you get the version 2.0 of the NXT, that's critically important.

Re: Zaino - Clear coat finish

Thanks for the info. I decided to go with something other than zano. Here is what I ended up getting.

Sonus SFX Detail Clay + Glyde spray
Sonus Paintworks cleaner
Klasse All-in-one wax

I also got a few microfiber buffing bonets that I'm going to try when using the wax. I found a D/A buffer that I'm going to try. I've always done wax by hand but I figured I'd give the machine a try.

Re: Zaino - Clear coat finish

Zaino isnt a wax, it is a polish. All wax does is shine and repel water, a polish will remove scratchs and whatnot. Two different things.

That all depends on the definition of "polish", even when used by Zaino. Zaino themselves say that even their top of the line Z2-PRO contains no cleaners or abrasives and they recommend the surface be properly prepared before using it. Zaino does make an all-in-one product that has chemical based cleaners in it, but for the most part Zaino's products do more to fill in fine swirls than actually remove them. They state on their website that their products do this. Many of the products Zaino refers to as polish are actually synthetic sealants. None of this is bad or even wrong, it's just that there is no standardized terminology in the detailing world - or at least too many people have used various terms almost interchangeably over the years, which just confuses things for people just getting into detailing.

Meguiar's sells a huge range of products that include carnauba blends, pure synthetic sealants, what they call "cleaner polishes" and what they call "pure polishes". Their cleaner polishes have some level of abrasive in them, depending upon the specific product, and are designed to actually remove swirls and scratches. Their "pure polishes" contain no abrasives at all and will do nothing to remove swirls. These are often referred to as glazes and will help to fill and conceal fine swirl marks but they don't last very long and are really intended as an option step for show cars. They can be applied under a wax or sealant though, and plenty of people get really good results doing this.

3M makes a similar mix of products - compounds, cleaner polishes, glazes, etc. Menzerna and Optima do as well.

Re: Zaino - Clear coat finish

Yea Mike, I know what you mean. It seems like companies use the term polish in different ways. Apparently a polish can be a product that cleans and preps the paint for wax by removing scratches and other imperfections. A polish can also be a wax to seal and protect the paint from water and other contaminant. Maybe when it’s a synthetic wax they call it a polish. I’m not sure but it is very confusing. Sounds like it’s important to read the bottle and buy a product that will do what you are looking for regardless if it is call a cleaner, polish, or wax.

For example, below is a link to a product I bought that I a paint cleaner that is supposed to remove the old layer of wax before applying new. The product is called a cleaner but in the description they refer to it as a polish but it will not offer and protection like wax does.

Zaino isn't the end all of car care products. There are much better products out there. I like ClearKote for my wax, Optimum is also really good. Check out www.autogeek.com and www.autopia.com for more information than you could ever need.
