91 Z28 to Sport Coupe?
ok guys Ive seen a few nice Sports Coupes around without any gfx's..and the look is growing on me...it gives the car a more "muscle car" look in my eyes. Im hoping to get my car painted sometime soon an would like to figure out whether or not it would be worth the effort. Here are my questions:
1. Does not having any gfx give you a significant amount of clearance over driveways and curbs, considering that the front nose is shorter? (this really matters since it is a DD and the fact that my current front gfx has a tear; it could save me the money of replacing the gfx with a new one)
2. How much weight would be saved by taking off the gfx's and exchanging the Z28 bumpers for the earlier Sports Coupe ones?
3. How hard would it be to fill in the mounting holes for the gfx's be?..or around how expensive would it be for a body shop to do it?
4. Anybody got some nice 360* view of their Sports Coupe?
5. Is there any aerodynamic advantage to having the Z28 gfx's?
6. Yay or nay for the change?
Here are some shots of my Z for reference:

Re: 91 Z28 to Sport Coupe?
For the fact that there are few 91/92 Z28s, i'm sure the concensus will be to not do it, but it is your car, your choice. Do what you like. It will probably save you about 30-40 lbs, but that is just a guess, could be more or less, i haven't taken the time to weigh them. You do have an aerodynamic advantage of having the ground effect that you have. The advantage is a nice flat nose at 60 MPH. past that i highly doubt that there is a lot of drag bringing the nose of the car down any more than the rest of the door wedge body shape. Now mind you wind resistance is better with the ground effects, but again, that really helps high speeds, not handling.
And yes you will have quite a bit more clearance in and out of driveways, thats why the nose's of sport coupes aren't as bad unless the tires are under pressured. Again that would depend on the angle of the driveway, but slow and at an angle, you'd miss it either way.
As far as filling in the holes, i would have it done properly, welding in patches, smoothing and repaint. I don't know your skill and i don't know the price of having that done professionally, but i would not suggest if you want to refrain from doing rust repair later by doing something stupid like fiberglass or trying to body fill the big holes.
My personal suggestion, get a new GFX piece, the car will hold it's value with it. Not to mention, i would suggest just fixing that tear in the front. You have the piece still attatched, so go get some bumper fix from a parts store, bond it back together, sand it smooth, prep the entire ground effects piece your self to save money, and then take it to a pro and pay $100 to match it to your car. Thats my

Keep it stock looking. 91-92 z28s are getting hard to come by in good shape anymore.. especially here in houston.

Re: 91 Z28 to Sport Coupe?
Doo itttt! Then sell me the GFX/Spoiler
But seriously, if you want a muscle car look, you need to go back in time an extra 20 years. Imo the SC's look cheap, and the 91-92 Z28's have a unique look, that has a fast look to them. Like they look fast sitting still.
Probably just me, but the 91-92 Z28 is my all time favourite car.

You would have a lot more cost and effort in front of you going to the Sports Coupe look than you do replacing the damaged front ground effects. You're looking at removing several brackets for the side ground effects, welding countless holes, replacing both bumper covers.... keep it true to it's original design and I don't think you'll be disappointed when it's repainted.

Put you effort into the Z and enjoy drooling over a freshly sprayed blue metallic 91 z28 in your driveway. It couldnt get much better than that right? Well maybe some SS 10 spokes and some drop springs but thats just how I would do it lol.

Check out radialtirekings sport coupe, hes a member. By far one of the nicest 3rd gens, (sport coupe or not) I have seen and it runs 8.4's I would agree sell it for a sport coupe or just fix what you got. I like both styles so I am no help. Good luck though.

Re: 91 Z28 to Sport Coupe?
I think third gens look a ton better without ground effects. I am sooo glad mines didn't have it but then I am sad cuz its not a Z! It looks alot cleaner and for sure gives a classic muscle look. If your going for that classic minimalist look like me get rid of them. But the spoiler might look weird without the ground effects. I still scrape when i go into some driveways and stuff, but as long as your careful its fine. If you want I can take more pics around the car, just let me know.

Re: 91 Z28 to Sport Coupe?
Thanks for the replies guys...I really needed to get that thought out of my mind...I think I'm going to keep it a sleeper with a bit of a twist...
I want to spray it with Electron Blue like the C5 Z06 or the Lemans Blue..I don't think it will be too much of a stray away from the stock color but its a really nice blue. (I kinda don't like the metallic flake on my car much)
..would this be a jay do it!...or nay spray it the stock color!
The color isn't really important as much as the rest of the performance goodies I want: LSX/T56, Koni Reds or Yellows, Arizen Racing Seats(if they still make 'em), C4 or C5 brake upgrade definitely, completely replace worn suspension components and maybe even a set of 18" by 8.5" in front and 18" by 10.5" with the correct spacing out back if funds allow...Well I guess this is really ambitious of me to plan this out but I'm sure I'll find a way to get it....
So, do these plans sound good guys? any suggestions are always welcome with me.

Sorry man, I dont have any other pictures that show the roof line..I always kinda crouch down to take photos and those in which I catch the roof aren't really good..if I catch some good sun later I'll take a quick pic for ya...

Re: 91 Z28 to Sport Coupe?
Well I live near humble and where i live i don't see many left. I used to see a bunch of iroc-z's and z28s around here but not anymore. There getting more scarce everywhere.
Well My car is a 1992 Rs. Its got a 305 tbi, 5 speed, and is white with t-tops.
Right now its actually all taken apart in my parents garage getting ready to be painted. Hopefully primer will be shot in the next few weeks.
