Best spot for an msd box

I have a msd 6al box for my 1991 camaro thats carb. I have all my a/c components hooked up and working along with my wiper motor so theres really no room on the firewall. Where would be the best place to mount the box so that it actually looks like it belongs there and not just thrown there? Id like it in the engine bay, i dont know if maybe a custom mounting bracket would do the trick?

The bracket is just a flat plate w/ one flange on the top and a leg on the bottom, secured by 3 screws, there are no vibrations whatsoever

Re: Best spot for an msd box

IMHO, anywhere NOT under the hood. Ours is bolted to the firewall inside the passenger compartment. Our C Prepared Firebird doesn't have much of an interior, though. Still, most problems I've seen from them usually happen when the MSD controller unit is under the hood.

Had a friend with a BSP Corvette at an autocross yesterday is having some ignition cut-out problems. His MSD is under the hood, bolted to the back of the front wheelwell. At the end of the event, the MSD itself was 146 degrees F by IR pyrometer. His battery was 115 deg F. I think he'll have it moved before the next event in August.

Re: Best spot for an msd box

Isnt it true if you have the box mounted in the car you hear a clicking noise? Also does this box since it produces such a high amount of electricity 100% safe to be around especially when its in the car with you? Does it produce any harmful things?

Re: Best spot for an msd box

The coil produces most of the charge not really the MSD box.

I mounted mine driverside firewall where the relays were before. I moved those to the fender well area. I still need to make a bracket for them for something. For now they are just zip tied together and laying there. Not that good on stuff, but the car doesn't see much road time anymore.

When i had one, i had it mounted on the driver side kick panel in the car and ran the wires through a tiny hole in the firewall. It was never really in the way, but would probably be more of a pain for the guys with a manual tranny. Which i have but again, wasnt ever really in the way.

Thanks, Yes I made it 15-20 years ago. You can put a test light on the batt terminals and jumpstart the car like if the batt was still there. I put some cooling holes on bottom of case and along the topsides in "cant see" places so the MSD box doesnt over heat. MSD gets power from those cables from the inside.

So in reality you have two batteries? But the one on the pass side is with all the msd stuff? How did you clean the inside of the battery? Whered you dispose of it all?

I think after hearing about all the over heating with the box in the engine compartment im going to do what you did. Do you ever hear a click noise in the car from the box?

If I recall correctly the box does vibrate/hum when it's working.

I never hear the box. If you have any sort of exhaust on the car or drive mostly with the radio on or windows down, even if it does hum i doubt you willl here it.

After seeing some of you guys 'covered' setup i'm gonna have to rethink
mine... lol
Never heard a peep from it and NEVER had heating issues including during
our 100F days we've been having here in Texas. Those relays on the panel
you see are for my 1989 electric fan setup i swapped in. Both adjustable
relays, one for each fan.

Re: Best spot for an msd box

I had a friend hook mine up and he put it on the passenger side behind the dash basically if you lay down on the floor on the pass. side and look up near the firewall its there with the with the ***** facing down. Mine is a digital 6 and it fits perfect and he ran the disconnect behind the kickpanel for some hidden security. And my a/c was hooked up.

I have only one batt. Its in the rear of the car.
I turned the bat upside down and drilled some holes in it.
I then let the acid drain into a pan.
I carefully removed the top and started pulling the guts out.
wear gloves and safety glasses.
I dont remeber what I did with the guts to be honest getting old sux dont do it! killed weeds? lol naw I think I deactivated the acid w a bunch of baking soda then recycled the lead and what was left of the acid..

I orginally had mine mounted upsidedown under the battery tray. I had 2 rethink that noise after I got caught in a 4hr rainy drive home. Water got into the unit and fried it. I would have been ok IF i had sealed it OR drilled a small hole in the top of the unit so water could drain out.. ooops

Best place for MSD box is on the Dealers shelf, that way you will not have any problems.

DUDE seriously?
Seeing as though you wasted money on a SLP stall speed converter and it is
ONLY 2400, you obviously really don't know anything about performance.

I must have a golden touch then. I have put them on 3 different cars
and never had a problem. Several of my friends have them including
on some race cars, with no problems.

Many MANY racers use an MSD box so, reliability can't be that big of an
issue. ALL Nascar's use them and it is very rare to see them have to switch
to the backup box. Some teams feel they are so reliable they actually
configure them for different tuning as apposed to backup.

Re: Best spot for an msd box

Dont get me wrong most of the guys I know I tell them to use em. It really cleans up the rich smell from monster cams and makes the throttle crisper. However, we have had 4 of them just stop working for no reason!!
One was my fault for mounting it upside down, getn caught in a rain storm, filled it with water lol..
Nascar uses a much higher dollar unit than I have in my car 4 sure.. Im sure they a get much better once over than the units I run..

What other unit would you recommend? I really only see the digital 6 or 6AL boxes around at local car shows. Whats a common problem? They just burn out?

That's an excellent idea especially with the kinda heat waves the US has
been having.

Since i know nothing about ignitions and wiring i might as well ask, so when i take it to the shop i wont sound like an idiot LOL. I have the 8202 msd blaster coil http://compare.ebay.com/like/2006060...Types&var=sbar and this distributor with wires http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...TQ:MOTORS:1123 plus the msd 6AL box. I already spoken to a tech from jegs about what to hook up and i have no idea what he was saying, all i know is he said something about you either have a 2 wire or 3 wire distributor. With my setup of parts, can i 100% not hard wire it so if a failure happens i can run my stock ign?

Been in this spot since early 1986......have had dozens of down pours on the interstate ( three days of straight rain doing almost 1000 miles on the 05 Power Tour with no hood on)......have driven hundreds of miles straight on days close to 100 degress, Idled in traffic over 90 degrees for hours on end at the Woodward Dream Cruise......never had a problem.

When I bought the 6AL back in 86 they didnt have rev limiter option built into the box, you had to get a seperate box for it.

Wow alright that makes sense. So for the newer MSD boxes how would you set the rev limiter? And whats a good RPM to set it at?

On the newer boxes I am not sure if it is a dial or "pills".......the limit you set it at all depends on what you are doing and how you motor is built.....while my motor could handle 7k with no problem I have mine set at 6k because with the roots I dont need to go over that for street driving.

Re: Best spot for an msd box

Alright i see, thanks. Also maybe you can answer my previous question about the hookup of the msd box with out hard wiring it in. "I have the 8202 msd blaster coil http://compare.ebay.com/like/2006060...Types&var=sbar and this distributor with wires http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...TQ:MOTORS:1123 plus the msd 6AL box. I already spoken to a tech from jegs about what to hook up and i have no idea what he was saying, all i know is he said something about you either have a 2 wire or 3 wire distributor. With my setup of parts, can i 100% not hard wire it so if a failure happens i can run my stock ign"?

Re: Best spot for an msd box

You should be able to figure your wiring out with this link http://www.msdignition.com/uploadedF...DTN_pn9615.pdf

As far as hard wiring......its your option either way.

Also back in '86 MSD was made in the USA, they're all made in China now so unfortunately the reliability has dropped.

Re: Best spot for an msd box

Yeah the MSD is kind of hit or miss. Some people love it, some people hate it. Ive used a coil and melted down in 20 mins. got another one and was fine. I run Mallory in the Dodge. But I was planning on putting a 6AL box on the Camaro someday when I find the extra money
