Has anyone on the forum converted the tail lights to LED's? I dont think it would be hard to do.. Im just wondering cuz my tail lights are BRAND NEW but still kinda dim...

I replaced the bulbs in the CHMSL with red LEDs. I used four 921-R12 wedge base LEDs from superbrightleds. com. The middle two holes in the CHMSL were disfigured slightly from the heat generated by the old incandescent bulbs so I had to take a rotary tool and bore them out a little to get the new LEDs to fully insert. I have a picture some where, let me find it and I'll post it.

The thing you need to watch with LEDs is the beam angle. LEDs are directional (spot) so to get a wide beam (flood) or a radiant spread there has to be more than one LED on the bulb. The LEDs I got for the CHMSL are a 12 LED bulb with a 75 degree spread. So they are more directional and brighter since they are only for rear view. The LEDs I installed in the footwell's are 220 degree bulbs so they light up more of the floor area, like a standard bulb. I think for 3rd gen tail lamps you would need a more flood like LED bulb rather than a spot like one because you need to light up the entire tail lamp housing for asthetic purposes. A spot style LED in the tail lamp would produce a bright red spot amidst a dark sea of red plastic.

I have red 5 SMD LED 194s in my tail lights. I really like them, they make the red look more red and are just as bright as the bulbs they replaced. I also have them in my side markers, and they look great.

I did mine, but only the red portion.Used two 24 led trailer tailligjts or 48 leds per side.
Only used the CB itself, not the whole assembly.Bought them on superbrigjtleds as well.There is thread floating around here somewhere.

Other led mods, astro van led tbl (48 leds).
22 led side markers.Posted threads on these too.

100 degree what? When I mean degrees I don't mean temperature if that is what you are referring to. I mean as in direction. superbrightleds.com refers to it as beam angle, the spread of the light being emitted.

I have tried LED's in the rear but they didn't add to the brightness. The Red loooked too blueish. I went back to super bright incan's and stayed with LED's on the license plate lights ony.

At superbrightleds.com they suggest that for red tail lamps a red LED should be used and not a white LED. I really don't know why, maybe has something to do with the white LED changing the color of the red lens. They don't say why. So did you use a red one or a white LED? I used red LEDs in the CHMSL and it looks red to me.

I used both the white and the red. The white gave off too much blue. The red wasn't bright enuff and both didnt fill up the lens very well. Old school incan's work for me.
