Third Gen Trim Tape

Hello,

I hope this isn't a topic that's already been discussed, I've tried my best to search for what I'm looking for on the forum and seem to be drawing a blank.

I purchased a 1987 third gen Camaro last year and have been in love with the car ever since. This is my first car like this, my previous vehicles have been newer beater cars. I never had a chance to learn much about the mechanics of cars growing up and was hoping to teach myself with this car. Over the last year I have been performing minor fixes (the seatbelt mechanism, windshield washer fluid not spraying, etc) to fix her back up to her glory days. The bigger fixes have been done by my mechanic and I've been asking a lot of questions to try and learn what he's doing.

I've reached the point where I am now trying to fix the car up aesthetically and have hit a bit of a dead end. There is some trim tape that runs along around the bottom of the car. It is a solid red line followed by three parallel smaller black lines on top. The red line is approximately 1/2" tall where the black lines are a lot closer to 1/8". Most of the car has the trim running around it aside from the passenger door and the two panels on the rear wheel wells. I'm looking to buy some more of this tape to run along the car and tidy her up.

So far the closest product I have been able to find is this
Trimbrite Trim Stripe on Amazon Trimbrite Trim Stripe on Amazon
that is available in different sizes. I was thinking worst case scenario that I match the colours and sizes and try my best to mimic the stripe already around the car. I don't know if this tape on my Camaro is standard GM issue or was added to the car by a previous owner. Any help in regard to identifying this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Re: Third Gen Trim Tape

Nice looking Camaro there, and a T-top too! I got my 88 painted several years ago and got the stripe kit from an outfit called Decal King in AB Canada. Was exact as factory stock and pretty easy to apply. What is on your car might not be a factory application. The black is pretty straightforward, measure and buy standard striping tape. The red might be hard to match exactly, might have to replace all to get it right. Welcome to the site here, pretty much the ultimate for third gen F bodies.

Re: Third Gen Trim Tape

Hey Tom, thanks for the help. I love the T-tops. My mom had a 3rd gen Firebird - which was new at the time - when I was born and some of my earliest memories are being in the back of that car with the T-tops off in the summer.

I'll check into Decal King and see if anything matches. Your reply also gave me the idea to message some local decal shops with the pictures and see if they can replicate it. I think you're right and that it most likely isn't a factory application. I'm glad to be part of the site, I've been browsing it for the last year and finally made an account. Tons of great information and people here.

Check Phoenix Graphix, Stencils and Stripes, etc. But I wouldn't be too surprised if the base Camaro stripes aren't reproduced. Next best option would be to hit your local vinyl sign guy and have them custom cut the stripes and do a layout on a backing so you can apply the 3 black stripes and the orange stripe all as one piece without disturbing the spacing. It might not be as high quality as the OE 3M vinyl, but it's better than nothing.
