Several people have done it. Not too hard either from what I understand. Something that they say tho is you need the Manual center console, because the Automatic console dies not line up correctly.

The console looks great in there. I've been planning this for my 87. Is that a manual console, as someone noted above that the auto version wouldn't line up correctly?

camaros are more difficult because the way the radio pod attaches to the center console. Starting in 1985 Firebirds radio pod is seperate and does not attach, so the install is much easier.

I used a Pod from a '89 Firebird and hacked up my dash to make it fit and then put a center console from a '99 Trans Am in there. I still need to permeantly mount the pod and the switches though. The console actually holds the pod in there perfectly, put I still want to mount it.
As far as the swithces, I mounted them in the ash try (along with everyone else) but i will use plexi permently mount them in there. I curently have a piece of my old console holding the switches in there so i can easily press them and I still can close the ash try lid. The actual ash tray will have to be moved.
Shifter **** and parking brake still work perfectly.
If you have a manual, manual console will work fine. There is only a problem if you have an automatic, then you'll have to get a manula, so no matter what, you need a manual console.
Think that about covers it, can always ask questions, either myself or someone els would be able to answer it.

its just kind of big, thats what I think he is flipping over. Some folks are still using a 56K modem so the extra large pic slows everything down.
John
I would recommend a size of about 200x300
They usually do not need to know what type of tire your running...

the comment "What type of tire your running" is to mean if you can read the tire then its probably a little large of a pic. thats all, if you want people to know you can list it in your sig...
are you running Win or Mac?
if your in WIN, open the file in a program like paint and you can resize it in the tools dropdown. in skew/stretch or something like that...

Here's a pic of the 4th gen console in my 86 T/A.
Both the autos and manuals are the same except for the shifter plate which pops out. You're definitely going to need a manual shift plate.

i mounted my hatch release where the traction control switch used to be, fit "like a glove", but not every console will have that

Has anyone tried to relocate the shifter mech to line up with the 4th gen auto console? I would not think it would be impossible to do, just a little work.

A friend of mine on this site has a auto console in his 88gta he hasnt' posted pics of it since he hasnt' gotten a boot made to put on the shaft but it is possiable. He did have to cut quite a bit of the support inside the console out. He also had to make a bracket to move the shifter over a little. I really like his compared to the manual ones I have seen on this site. I dont' think the shifter looks right sitting in there like that.
Just my opinion

The Reason I highly doubt that they would give you a hard time is because Manual Transmissions do not have an indicator, heck, Firebirds had no actual indicator from 85 until 89 for sure, I am not even sure about 82-84 having them (I would have to look). Personally I think it stinks not having an indicator. I am always poping my car into neutral checking to see if I am in Overdrive.
