I do not have a pink/black wire. This would be a pink wire with a black stripe right.what have you guys come up with that did this already. also what about the other switches like the headlights and heater. These are the wires I have

4th gen cluster plug:

What yr guage cluster is it? Certain yrs have different options on the guages (like 99-up with the little dot matrix display etc). Of course soem wires wont be used as the 4rd gen doesnt use a low oil light or traction control inop light etc...

The gauges cluster is out of a 94 camaro V6. At least thats the year written on the windsield of the car at the boneyard. Can you get me a wiring diapgram thingy for a 94 and 95 and also my 91? I have been trying to peice togehter the wiring and there are a few spots that got me stuck. I know there will be wires not used on the 4th gen connector but should ALL the wires on all the 3rd gen connectors still be used on the 4th gen connectors. I know GM had wires run in the car that never did anything as they where for other year cars and options. Have you figured out a way to run the cable for the heater controls to open different vents? and what about the vacuum lines. Im sure I will figure it out but if your furthure then me then please give the secrets to help me along

You will be ok if the cluster is a 97 out of an LT1 car . On the 98-up clusters your gonna have some work to get the tach to read right . The LS1 tach signal is the same as 4 cyl engine . The tachs are calibrated , you cant just give it a signal . In a 98-up cluster your gonna have to convert your tach signal to a 4cyl. signal for the 98-up tach to read correctly . I know a guy that swapped a LS1 into a 3rd gen , and to get his factory 91 tach to read correctly he had to play with different resistors to get the correct signal to the tach . Definately have a FACTORY service manual for the year F-body the cluster is from for the complete detailed wiring schematic . The clusters got really specific in the 98-02 years , i.e. a 98 cluster wont work right in 2000 car and vice versa , even though their appearence is identical .

97 prior clusters is desireable , because all the signals to the guages in the LT cars are the same as 90-92 cars . Cant speak about the 89-earlier ....I havent worked on those . You may possibly have issues with the speedo reading correctly as well , I doubt it though . If your car is auto , I know the 90-92's used a 40 pulse signal , like the 4th gens . All the idot lights and turn signal lights and such should all work correctly once all the 3rd gens cluster wires are put in the right places in the 4th gen connector

Good luck

To bad you werent swapping in an LT or LS engine . the dash wiring would actually be ALOT easier on the mind , hehe

If im not mistaken, dont the 90-92 tpi cars uses a 4000 pulse per mile? That would be why i ordered a speedo interface box form dakota digital.

As for the tach......if thats correct i should be able to use a interface box as well to recalibrate the signal would i not?

Srry bottled, I can only dig up 98-newer wiring diagrams/service manuals off gm's tech site. didnt realize that until i went to dig up a diagram for ya.

Custon X, thats for trying. I have a book for the 4the gen cars. I started to connect the headlight switches today. I spent from 10am to 5pm and got nothing done. Im not the best wiring diagram reading. I do have the switch working but there are small problems like the foglight switch doesnt light up when there on, the light in the headlight switch comes on when I open the doors but doesnt come on when I turn the lights on. I cannot figure out the dimmer switch wires. I was gonna give it a break and try the heater controls but I don't want a mess yet and I need my heat.
Has anyone got the headlight switch to work right. I dont remember if the 4th gen cars had an audible tone if you left the lights on or the keys in the ign. my 91 does and i get the feeling I will loose all that with this new dash. Not a biggie though. I just want the headlights hooked up the correct way. if anyone can give me some help to get me along that would be great. I will try again tomorow.

u r sofa king we tah did,

I haven't seen it asked or explained in any of the 4th gen dash posts.

BUT what are you planning/doing about the trim piece on top of the dash where "our" (thirdgen) dash pads are normaly?.... The 4th gen dash is deeper than the thirdgen.

Also for whoever asked about the cluster wiring diagram for a 95 Z there was one posted in the LT1 section on camaroz28.com not to long ago.

ok I got the headlight switch hooked up today. It does not work like the old one though. When I turn my high beams on, the fog lights and low beams stay on too. I like it that way but not sure why its like this. Here is how I have my wires hooked up. BTW, this is a 91z28 with a 95z28 dash:

3rd gen 4th gen

HEADLIGHT SWITCH HEADLIGHT SWITCH

red------------------------12 volts hot---------------red
black-----------------------ground--------------------black
yellow------------------dimmer switch(?)-----------yellow
orange-----------------fuse block--------------------orange
dk green--------------NOT USED
white---------------------to both white wires on dimmer switch
brown--------------------brown on headlight switch
brown on fog light switch
grey on fog light switch
brown on dimmer switch

3rd gen 4th gen
FOG LIGHT SWITCH
yellow-----------------not used
purple-------------------------------------------------yellow
black---------------------------------------------------black
grey----------------------------------------------------lt green and grey

DIMMER SWITCH
not used--------------dk green
white on headlight switch------------------- white
white on headlight switch------------------white
ground----------------- black
brown on headlight switch---------brown

someone please check this for errors on there swap. It is working for me but here is the small problems:
I have no dimming, all the dimmer switch does is turn dome light on
the buzzer will not shut off unless i put my seatbelt on
the light for the heater controls does not turn on after turning the lights on

I do not have a cluster yet so checking that will have to wait.

Why not use the 3rd gen light switch/dimmer and its wiring?

you know what, I may think of doing that if I cant get the smal problems fixed but I am gonna wiat to see if anyone else used the newer switch. I am also gonna go get another headlight panel switch and mess with it to see if your idea(nice idea too) looks good to me.

Custom X, I put a few descriptions of the wires list you put in a post. They are very similar to my 95 cluster:

Dark green ------------------------------------temp gauge
Dark Green/whitestripe ---------------------VSS
thin light green --------------------------------ABS fail(not used)
Thick light green------------------------------ high beams indicator
thick black--------------------------------------ground
black/white stripe ----------------------------ground
red -----------------------------------------------check gauges(not used)
2x pink ------------------------------------------hot in run,hot in run
2x blue -----------------------------------------low trac,RH turn signals
blue/white stripe ------------------------------unknown
light blue/white stripe-------------------------unknown
orange-------------------------------------------12V (not used)
2x white-----------------------------------------tach,skip shift(not used)
thick brown--------------------------------------air bag light
thin brown----------------------------------------low oil light(not used)
2x thin brown/white stripe --------------------SES light,unknown
light tan -------------------------------------------oil pressure gauge
light tan/whitestripe-----------------------------brake light switch
Yellow/Black stripe-------------------------low coolant light(not used
2x purple/white stripe-------------------TCSlight(not used),unknown

Does the 2x mean 2 wires of that same color? If so then I put both potential functions.Comparing your colors to mine, and what is listed, there is no wire for the fuel gauge. my color for it is purple. this may be the second ppl wire you have. There is no LH turn sig., mine was lt blue. my seatbelt light is yellow, all my cluster lights are grey wires.
There will be wires left over obviously. I am waiting on my cluster to come in so don't quote me on these findings. Let me know what you come up with because some wires on the 4th gen cluster have the same color as others so I will have to test them with the 3rd gen wire to see if that function or gauge works.

Yes the 2x were for the actual number of wires with that color.

As for the actual uses: I got this from Gm for the 98 specific cluster.........im not positive it applies to earlier models........

Putting a 4th gen dashboard in a 3rd gen may be cool and all but what if somebody could get a nice 2nd gen dashboard in a 3rd gen.
