Sup all? I'm looking for a little project to do in a day or less, and i thought, why not make a shift knob? But I don't have any ideas on what to make it out of. I thought about an 8 ball...see them all over, you can buy them in Autozone for cryin out loud. Thought about a baseball, but I'm not a huge baseball fan and it would look kinda tacky I think. Thought golf ball, but Im not a golf fan and it would be to small. So...Im fresh out of ideas...anyone got any ideas? Howabout some pictures? 5-speed, 6-speed, auto, I want to see them all. Show me some unique homemade shift knobs!

well i didnt do this but my sister used it in her 92 jetta.......she hated the stock ball on her shifter so she used a pretty cool old antique bronze door knob that was in the shape of a T.....we acctually found it in an old vw bus in the junkyard......it was cool until the handle broke in half and she lost the stock ball so she is just shifting with the rod.....hah

Theres nothing as cool as making your own, well, anything usually, but in this case about anything you could/would ever want is probably for sale somewhere and it'd be less hassel and likely work better. But thats just what I think

I've never actually heard of anyone making their own, but good luck to ya. I guess if you could tap threads into about anything you thought was a good idea if you had a threadcutter.

i made mine out of 2inch round aluminum and 3/4inch brass for the button. this was a week long project...

i taperd one end of the 2inch wide alum to 45* and matched to its point, then i put a 3* taper from the other side to the first taper.

then i drilled a hole through the entire shift knob1/3 wide(i think). then at the large end i cut a 3/4 hole about an inch and a half deep.

i got a boreing tool and i put a lip above the inside of the 3/4 inch hole no mor ethen 30thousanths deep.

i drilled a hole 1/16th through the brass and machined a piece of steel to fit freely through the hole. i cut the steel in half and put a spring in the hole. i put th etwo pieces of steel through each end and put the brass inset into the top of the aluminum.

The Spring inside the middle of the brass inlet would push the two small steel inlets outward and when put in the aluminum it will make the brass piece stay, and the lip on the alum will hold it in place.

Then i fitted a rubber inset to go to the bottom of the newly made **** knob and then placed it on my camaros shift button thingy.. below is a diagram, as soon as i get time ill scan the pics and post them here..

THAT, is bad azz! What did that cost ya? I want one!

my old T handle me and My friend made in a laid (dunno how to spell it). But i bought this one and cut my shifter down.

So does cutting down the shift rod help?? I thought you had to get the kit to make it work better. I just went out and bought a Hurst shifter. Not sure what would be a good idea to make, but an ear cleaner could work(parent hood)... LOL

I think I'm going to go with either the flameballs or the RS engraved one...

I wish I had a picture...but on my Jeep Wrangler I have a shift knob made out of the femur part when a person gets an artificial hip replacement. Its made out of titanium and stainless steel. My dad is an orthopedic surgeon so he took it out of some old lady that needed a new one and had a hole drilled in and put it on our Jeep. Its kind of hard to picture I guess...next time I go down home I'll take a picture of it....its not as gross as it sounds

I know someone who made one out of a Budweiser tap handle.

I don't have a picture but at one point I took a base ball and drilled a hole in it and jambed it on to my shifter. It was pretty cool but I ended up taking it off about 2 months later.

Nothing like throwing a curve ball into 3 gear.

on my old 86 f150 theres a chunk of wood for a shifter. its pretty cool.

I drilled and tapped an 8 ball when I was in high school. It was MUCH higher quality than the junk 8 ball shifters you can buy because I started out with a real 8 ball. It was as hard as a rock, so the shifting felt good and firm, but it didn't freeze my hands in the winter and burn the sh*t out of me in the summer like my MBA knobs do (That's what Z28Racer's knob is). I definately think my MBA knobs are much nicer (except when they're too hot or cold to touch), but for the $8 I paid for that 8 ball, I definately can't complain.

Im going to make a little cover, probably out of heat reflective material with an elastic band to put over it when im not in the car to avoid the annodizing fading, and also to hopefully keep it a little cooler, plus the windows will be pretty dark tinted.

Ok here it is like I said...sorry it took a while, I don't have internet at my mom's house anymore and I was there for the past few weeks on winter break. But here it is.....what you are seeing is the top part of the femur from a complete hip replacement. Don't know if you're familiar with bones at all but it is the top part that is replaces on your leg bone that connects into the socked of your pelvis....and this is on my Jeep Wrangler

I never thought of the HR Gieger reference...its funny to see the reaction of people when I tell them what it is...especially the girls, they always get grossed out. =)

tap handle sounds cool. i was going to use a miller on for my 4 wheel drive lever. never got around to it though

since i have the top button on my auto shifter do i need to get one with a botton in it?

wow! the old lady hip shifter knob is definitely cool lookin, i dont have a pic right now but i have a Hurst round black shifter knob with the button on top for my line locks, it works great and looks really cool too.

Not home made, but matches the car well. I always wanted to make a baseball shift knob. Maybe I will try that.

Just realized that that is an old pic. I still have the same shifter on now, but the shaft of the shifter is shaved an inch, and I fixed the collar on the bottom of the knob so its flush. The shift knob now sits nicely right on top of the booty. I will try to get pics soon.

A shifter ball I want is one I sen on a NASCAR cup car. it looks like a wiffle ball but is made out of aluminum and has about a 2 1/4 to 2 1/2" diameter to it. I cant find them anywhere

Hurst makes (made?) a cool white knob that you put together yourself.. has glass for the lens on top, plastic white knob and logos or shift pattern things to put under the lens.. i have one, its pretty sweet

Well i know first hand that the knobs for the 3rd and 4th gen use the same shifter stick size and threads, but i do have a 4th gen T56 transmission and Pro 5.0 shifter in my car, but like i said they all fit, take my word for it

whos got the cheapest silver ball shifter knob. My buddy paid $70 for his red one from RK Sport. thats a rip off

In high school I had a Ramcharger and I made my auto shifter shorter and threaded it to work with a Budwieser Tap it was cool. On the new T-56 when I get it installed I have a SLP Leather knob.

You know those big pull handles they have for tap beer like budweiser at the bars? I have one, no manual transmission thouh and was wondering if that would work?

ok finally i have pics of my shifter. i know my crappy paint pics didnt do justice but these pics dont do much justice eaither. the entire knob except for the button i made out of aluminum so i polished it and damn it was shiny. so the sun reflected off it and well u get the picture. theres three in all but ill only post the two best.

yea it sorta does. later today ill take some pics without the damn glare ill see if u can see the brass button. the entire knob took 3 days to complete. (but i was in machine shop at the time only working an hour a day)

one of my friends took a piston head out of his dirtbike and welded the wrist pin on the top of the stick. he put it in his jeep, and it looks pretty cool and pivots on the wrist pin
