Broken motorized to non motorized hatch conversion
In my GTA, the hatch pulldown motor casing is broken.. I know you can purchase new assemblies to fix it...
But, I have an 89 firebird parts car. It has a non-motorized hatch.
I was wondering if I would be able to just swap these out?
thx.

an 89 with a non-motorized hatch? That can't be stock. In 86 it became standard on all models, and the rear area was completely changed to accomodate it. Installing a non motorized latch mechanism is more than just a bolt-in. The plastic is different, and the sheet metal that it mounts to is different.

Its way totally differernt, the brackets for the pulldown hatch are spaced far apart, while the manual 82-85 hatch release is small and the 3 bolts are within 3inches apart from each other, I cant remeber how far the motorized ones are but they are much farther than that. I originally was going to put in the motorized pull down unit into my car but after looking at what had to be done it would have been pointless to spend a week getting it in correctly. You can drill some holes in the tracks of the pull down motor and put some small bolts thru to stop the unit from sliding up and down.
