90-92 WHOLE dash swap into 88 IROC

I have searched and i can't narrow the damned thing down to get rid of all the questions about putting just the cluster in the dash. I like the smoother lines of the dash over my sharper edged 82-89 style. I need to know what needs to be rewired, the whole cable to electronic speedo thing, and basically, a basic guide to get the dash out. so for people who have removed their dashes please post and get me some info on this, thanks.

I'm assuming you plan to remove everything. Including the dashpad the cluster, and the plastic framework for the whole thing. If that's what you are planning to do, it is a pretty big PITA if its your first time. Dashapd and cluster removal are staightforward so I'll skip to the framework.

First off you need to take all the little trim and get to the frame itself, more of a pain on a bird, should be easier on a maro. (BTW everything I'm talking about is from my Bird so Maro might be a bit different) There are 2-4 small bolts holding the frame to the car body on the top. Then there are one on each bottom corner of the dash frame. Also the whole frame is riveted to a metal bar that goes from the PS foot well to the DS one. Do not try to take the rivets out, the bar is removable. (You have to unbolt the bolts holding the steering column in place though) Also a bunch of wire ties are attached to the frame, so those have to be removed.

If you need any more info you can E-mail me.

Ok ignore what he just said, the best way to do it is to get all the wiring from a donor car, it would more than likely be far too much trouble to rewire the old harness and add the vss setup to your harness, just get a 90-92 complete harness and computer, then onto the mounting, the metal side points where the dash bolts up are different, where it attaches at top and bottom, you'll either have to cut them out and fabricate new mounts, or put a set of the mounts from the donor car in, voila, your car is now a 90-92

umm? I thought i heard about something that connects to the cable and turns it into a an electronic signal....that would take car of the speedo.....and from reading the gauge cluster posts, all the other wiring is the same, as far as 90-92 computer and harness...no b/c i would then have to change from MAF and CSI. F that.....Just to let you guys know i am not the typical beginner, i have done 2 motor swaps, make the vert a 5spd from an auto and changed the heater core, fueltank swap, rear swap etc etc....lots and lots of work. I have also removed all the of interior except all of the center console and the dash...so there you go. now could you explain the mounts a little better or would going on and lookn at the cars tell me all i need to know, but if that is true could you tell me how far different they are before i go an track down a 90-92 car to take a look at....Any one have first hand experiance with this before...?as in they did it themselfs...?

Yeah heres your mister first hand info, like i said, the mounts are different, they are held on at each end with 6 spot welds, 3 just below the windshield, and 3 near the bottom of the dash, you can break them off, bolt up the dash with the speaker frame bolts and fab your own for the bottom, or remove a set from a 90-92 car and weld them into yours.

This site is great but alot of people just read the info and then pass it on and it kinda works like that telephone game, by the end, it is misleading. Too much 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th hand info floating around. I have gotten info before and it has been wrong, you can even look at posts and you will see people debating who is right. "well he said that she said this is how it was"
"but, this is how it is"
"no this is"
and not untill someone can step in a prove that they have done it personally "this way" does the argument stop.

thanks for the info, it is just that what you type might see perfectly logical and put a good picture in your mind of what needs to be done, but for a person who has not done the swap i don't have a very good picture....kinda like me telln some one who wants to do an engine swap, yeah diconnect the wires and hose, the 2 motor mounts and then attach chains and pull. See what i am saying, i am not flaming just trying to show my postion.

EDIT: and yeah i am lookn for a dash, what does your RS dash look like? 115 gauges, with a 5000(V8 nonG92) or 6000(V6) redline? do all the gauges work and everything....how much do you want for it, and what do you think it is gonna take to get it shipped to NJ, Zip is 08801.

Well Tommy is dead on. We both pulled and swaped befor.

As for the Cluster id have to look. I just got the car and Im pulling the RS dash/harness and putting in my 92 Z dash harness. Prob a waste of my time for little wire diff. I could repin for. But I dont care.

E-mail me on price and shiping talk. Chris@cecoatings.com let me know who you are and what for in the subject so I dont get ya mixed up with other people looking for parts from the 92.

The dash / interior wiring are the same for v6 / v8, rs and z28, there are plug ins for all the accessories you may or may not have, the instrument cluster is diff for the V6s, and you can drop the 145 in the place of another 115 in the v8 car without a problem, but you may have some calibrating to do if you're using a bolt in sender at the trans for the speedo, and also sending the signal to the ecm, because i believe the earlier cable speedo ones have a buffer on the speedo and send the signal to the ecm, whereas the 90-92 sends the signal to the ecm and then an output to the gauge cluster, if im not mistaken.....

Hi,
This is the exact type of swap I want to do on my 84 Camaro.

I have almost everything figured out for the swap, but for the speedo.

I have been told that the 86-89 Firebirds that came with Electronic speedo used the same ECM as the 82-90 Camaros.
So they have said to try and get a VSS from one of those year Firebirds, and it should work with cluster and the ECM.

Is this correct?
Or is there a better way to get the electronic speedo to work?

Someone on another board suggested using this.
http://www.jagsthatrun.com/Pages/Spe...eedometer.html

but I'm not sure how this all connects?

This is the only thing stopping me from doing this swap. Can anyone here help me though this?

Thanks
Chris.

As far as the mounts on the side. How important are they? I read on another post that the 7mm screws will hold just fine. And ealier today I looked at a friends '85 firebirds dash and it didnt even have to metal side mounts, just the top screws.
