Check this light conversion y'all.

I stumbled across these on my hard drive from awhile back.

Any ideas?

I've got no info on it.

Looks similar to Redraif's conversion (try doing a seach for her name, plenty of information to be had), but looks like the headlight "pop-ups" have been welded shut to make one complete hood.

I think it looks killer.

Typically I don't care for that hood, or single racing stripes, but dang the whole package on that car does something for me.

I'd lose the windshield banner though.

I think if that car was painted black or one nice dark color it would be sweet. :hail:

im fully familiar with redraif's car.

IIRC, the guy who gave me those pictures said they were, in fact, LT1 camaro headlights.

How he got them to fit is beyond me.

I remember tryin to figure out how to make it work on my 86.
But now I can't imagine it working on my 91.

Figured it may give you non-banshee nosed guys somethin to play with though.

I don't think the headlight doors were welded shut. From the way the hood sits slightly high at the front edge, and the way it looks like it might be sitting low about halfway back, I'd say it's a Camaro hood on that 'bird.

Dont lik it at all. Camaro hood and camaro style lights. Bah Mine as well get a camaro if you want that look and turn it into a bird. Stick a notchback on it. LOL Notchbacks on camaros look even worse then on the birds in my opinion. Those lights just dont go with the style of it. But to all their own right.

It wouldn't be so bad if you had the option to flip up the lights as well as turn them on in "lazy eye mode"

It looks cool like that, but it sort of kills the firebird feel.

I want to do that to my car since it looks very aggressive.
I'd like to get a hood that doens't have hte headlight section cut out of them so that it looks cleaner.

It does need a different paint job. And as for the hood I have that hood and love it. Now for the lights someone figure out how to do that. I would love to do that.

That isn't a Camaro hood...if you look closely you can still make out the lines where the flip up lights are. Its either a bad job of making the hood completely even across or the picture is just bad...I'm leaning towards poor quality picture. Besides I think a Camaro hood would be harder to make fit than to weld in the missing pieces...since Camaro and Firebird fenders aren't exactly the same, the hood wouldn't line up right. This is an interesting mod, I like the lights used a little better than Raif's.

So, has anyone actually attempted this mod yet?

If you pull the motor and everything out there should be plenty of room for anything you want to stick in there. I think it should be a fairly straightforward mod.

that is just a clip put on a stock hood and then he welded the headlight tops to the hood. Im not much of a fan of conversions like that. Hell since i put my hood on i cant even see my headlights when they are flipped up. but to each his own

Fiberglass hoods can be ordered without the pop-up headlight provision for the Firebird. I was asked when ordering my fiberglass hood if I needed the headlights cutout.

It's true. Little headlight on the Olds Cutlass and the GP.

Looks like they took the entire assembly off the G body and slapped it in the F.

I'd definately like to see better pictures of that car.

I couldn't decide between something like that or this:

If I mounted them up there where they go stock I'd remove the whole door and put projectors there with a clear cover like some of the vette and rx7 conversions.

It is a firebird hood. If you pay attention to the hoods' detail you can still see the squares where the light assemblies are. It is not a custom hood job just a stupid light mod.

www.vfnfiberglass.com has the flat, stock hoods, in bolt-on & pin-on style, with the headlight doors as part of the hood.

That'd be killer, to use a VFN hood, and the replacement/non pop-up lights. Using the VFN hood, it would appear totally stock! Too bad, the hood is flat, no GTA vents. I could one could always cut the vent holes out, and put the GTA vents on there.

Im surprised I've never seen a PIAA/projector type conversion done on a bird with the flips welded. We've occationally seen it on Camaros. Maybe there just isn't enough room....or maybe it would just look plain silly

The fitmet of that hood looks rather familiar. I have had two of those hoods and once ran across a third one on an '88 Formula. The first one I had fit just like that hood. It was a hair short so the gap up front was huge and the hood was too low in the middle of the fenders while being too high in the front. I somewhat gave up on the hood and couldn't get my money back. A few years later I tried it again and painted it. When I did I found a minor crease towards the front of the hood. I went back and this time managed to get a replacement hood. The replacement fit a great deal better and was a little long in the front but the side gaps were still pretty large. On one side the hood was about a 1/4" below the fender while the other was roughly even with it, suggesting the hood wasn't even.

All three of the hoods I have seen in person fit so poorly that they stood out. From my limited knowledge of fiberglass it seems they are pulling the hoods out of the mold way too early and probably using the mold beyond its useful life. In the end I wound up making a number of little tweaks here and there to make the stock hood work. It took some effort to keep everything under the stock hood, but at least the car looked right even though it was rather plain.

I have seen one hood in a photo that fit perfectly. I am not sure if it was the same J.C. Whitney hood or if someone made the effort to rework the hood so that it fit like it should. If they did rework the hood it would have been a huge effort.

Re: Check this light conversion y'all.

I was planning on a similar mod years ago, in which the headlights would come up halfway. Only problem was finding a good enough headlight replacement that fit, that wasn't a cheap apc fog/driving lamp.

Edit...I've corrected myself.

What about using the headlights from an early 90's model Grand Prix? As I recall, those are low profile skinny head lights. I've posted a picture of one below.

Did you forget to link the picture?

Here is a picture of a 93 Grand Prix. That's what I was thinking of, not the Grand Am. I personally think the headlight set up in the first post is killer. I really like it, especially with that hood. It really makes the car look like one of those touring or road race cars.

:hail:
