1992rs/ss

has anybody reconditioned there trim pieces with that spray trim paint? does it look good? what prep. work did you do on the pieces? the gray pieces around my doors have some nicks and would like to bring it back to a like new look. pics would be nice.

I clean the parts with Greased Lightning, then use their Vinyl Prep, 2 or 3 light coats of color and a couple coats of low lustre clear. Makes vinyl and hard plastic look really nice. I've only used the Landau Black, can't comment on the other colors. But it leaves a nice satin finish, with the low lustre clear topcoat. Dries super quick, and holding up perfect so far! Don't have any interior pics, will try to get some soon.

They make 3 gloss levels of clear, so if you're into that Armor Alled look, try the gloss clear.

You mean the SEM brand, or just vinyl / plastic painting in general? I did a ton of research to see what folks were using, and the 3 products folks were using most were Krylon, Duplicolor, and SEM. Some folks liked the Krylon, but some said it sucked. Same for Duplicolor. All the feedback on SEM was positive, so that's what I chose. Granted, it's logical to assume that, for instance, a red piece that's painted black will look ratty before a black piece that's actually formed from black plastic. Some things, like door sills and kick panels will probably start looking bad before say, a rear headliner piece. But not everyone has the time or cash to find and buy mint black originals. I can't give a long term review on my stuff, because I only started painting things recently, and anything freshly painted will look great! I do recall Mod Jim challenging people to look at his pics and try and pick out which pieces were painted and which were not..... and he's had his stuff painted a while. Everything plastic and vinyl and leather in your ride that is NOT naturally the color it is, has been painted or dyed at some point in it's creation. There's no reason to believe that colorant that is just as good as what was used in part creation is not also available to the aftermarket consumer. I think a lot of the problems people have with their paint scratching off has to do with poor preparation, not following instructions, and not clear coating stuff.

If I notice any problems with the stuff I'm doing, I'll be the first in line leading the "this stuff sux!" lynch mob, Lol!

i do not like automotive paint because it leaves the pieces too glossy...i used flat black and it still gave it the armorall look.



i really want to try also corps soft touch paint...

Here's a pic of a '95 Olds Cutlass leather shifter I did, was originally gray, and the plastic base was greyish brown. I scuffed the plastic with scotch brite, masked off the button (which is glossy plastic) with masking tape, and shot the whole thing with Vinyl Prep. Rinsed it off with a damp cloth, dried, sprayed 3 light coats of Landau Black (which is probably glossier than SEM flat black), and 2 light coats of low lustre clear. This is how it turned out. Looks a bit glossier in the photo than in person, cause it's dark out and bathroom spot was the best light I could find on short notice!

still doesn't look bad, not like you used automotive paint. my interior pannels look like metal painted very smooth and shiney which can be good or bad...i don't like it though.

I used SEM, after using their Plastic Prep and wiped dry.
Changed colour from Grey to Medium Graphite for the whole interior, and it turned out great.
Looks just like the factory Medium Graphite on my friends car.

I've found the Krylon paint tends to splatter, and also think it's too glossy for the interior plastics.
