Think my grey car would look decent with an aluminum race type fuel door on the rear quarter. Is there such a thing for the third gen cars that doesn't require hacking up the body?

I think one would look good also maybe some1 sells a conversion kit im sure you would have to do some cutting of the quarter tho.

sweet idea.... what show was it... they did one on a vette replaced with billet custom one. over hauling thats the show.
i bet you get one custom machined from like boydes or maybe the guy from overhauling i forget his company name.

Picture is from Jegs, Ford Mustang add on, about a hundred bucks for that. Like the look but not sure I'd spend that amount of money for it.

The RX-8's also have them. I will check the price in a few days and also stop by the dealership and check the dimensions.

Our fuel door is 6" in diameter. 6 1/4 " for the entire enclosure. Would need a similar dimension.

I have an original Ford Bullit one that I got for the wife's '00 Mustang GT 'vert. We took it off because the finish was peeling on it (Ford quality, job 1 my ****) and we won't put it back on until I get it stripped and refinsihed. I can measure it tonight and get back to you... well, at least comparing it to my '86 T.A. gas lid anyway.

The Bullit one from Ford originally only cost $28 shipped (Ford parts dealer I know), but after the Bullit parts caught on all over the nation, the part jumped to 3-4 times that and hasn't really come down much. Neener neener.

Here's the basic installation pics. I just mocked it up, but it could easily be done with several small custom made L-brackets. Drill some holes through some 3/4" long pieces of 3/8" square bar stock, tap it for some longer button or straight allen headed bolts (to replace the "fake" ones on the Mustang unit) and tighten each one up. Here are the pics... would look good on certain colors I would think. Other colors could paint to match or contrast...

Remove the 5 screws from the hinge and cup.


Pull the outer most adge out first, or the hinge will not clear the filler kneck. The other end off the hinge will not clear.


This is the correct procedure. Some light tugging may be needed, but it will come.


Then take the cup out. The front (of the car) most edge has a little bump in the plastic to keep it seated. Pull inward lightly and it will come out.


Here's the back of the Mustang gas cap as it comes from Ford. This is a Bullit unit.


It sits fairly flush, but some minor bending/trimming of the metal behind the cap would be needed for a great fit.


This is how much it sticks out. It would be very easy to tap the offending metal tabs out of the way to install this cap. It actually looks like it fits the car.

I actually sent an e-mail to MBA two or three weeks ago, asking if there was a possibility of their manufacturing a billet version--if I recall correctly, I sent this link or at least one that discussed this topic. Never heard from anyone.

Well, it wasn't this thread you sent, because it's less than a week old, LOL! The reason they probably didn't respond was because there are so many billet caps being made for the Mustang already. I know it may hurt a little bit, but go cruise some Mustang parts websites, or leaf through a magazine and you'll find several. Just wear rubber gloves and a ski mask and nobody will be able to track you to it.

As for grinding off the Mustang and Ford off of the back of this one, I wouldn't do it. I wouldn't do it because I don't recommend this Bullit gas cap to anyone any more. So many of these Bullit units are flaking off their coating, per cruising the mustangworld.com forums. See the part where your finger gets under the lid in the pic above? Flaking off there and cracked clearcoat in several other places. Get an aftermarket unit made for the Mustang and it won't have the Ford or Mustang to grind off, plus at least you have a chance for better quality.

Yeh I see where your comin from jim but i like alot of the things some of the imports do but im not gonna go paint my interior all lime green or somethin. Actually alot of them have good taste but alot dont. I should take a pic of this car at work its a stock like 90 accord with flyinlows wing haha.
