Yes, there is a big difference. I know torch red has an orange hue and is the color found on some of the newer C5 corvettes, bright red is a rich red found on other Chevy’s including Irocs. My brother has a 91 Camaro which originally came in torch red but chose to repaint it bright red (like his old 89 Iroc) and you can see a big difference when we replaced his carpet.

Your best bet is to go a paint shop or paint store and ask them for a color paint chip chart for 1991. You will easily be able to tell one from the other. Hope this helps..

Probably get away with a pint. Remember, most basecoats are mixed 1:1 so you'll have 2 pints of sprayable material. You don't put basecoats on thick, you spray just enough to acheive "hiding". This is usually achieved in two coats.

so basiclly i wantto just get to hide the primer? im still new to painting and never was taught anything, just goin by what im thinkin is right and what ive seen done. well i think with some of the extra paint i got in my garage ill start sprayin some test panels and figure out how i should set the gun and mixtures.

hey GMtech my bigest question is about readin the mixing cups. i got the 12 piece kit from eastwood and dont really have the big of clue. most of the time i use the biggest which i guess is a gallon and i just use the 1:1 spot on it mixing the paint and reducer. ill take a few picks of the cups i use or look on eastwood so ya know the ones im talkin about.

Tim,
The amount and type of reducer or activator to paint will depend ENTIRELY on the type of paint you buy. Are you using a base/clear type paint, or a single stage? Use what ever is reccomended by PPG for the type of paint you buy.

As far as getting an EXACT match- because the car may have faded over the years, the best route to getting the match is NOT to go by a factory "chip", but to have the paint store do what my local PPG dealer calls a "Chromavision" scan, basically, they have this scanner that looks like a stud sensor and it "reads" the paint, and tells them what to mix to get the hue correct.

A good paint shop will tell you exactly what products you need to go with the paint you buy. If you are painting ground effects and urethane parts you will be well advised to use an "adhesion promoter" type product in the preparation stages, and probably a "flex addative" in the actual paint.

I have found that reds take a little more to hide the primer than other colors I have sprayed. Your results may vary.

Eric

the type of paint im buyin is ppg's DBU line. i already have the reducer from doin my friend hood. all i need to do is buy the paint. so i guess ill end up just needing a quart just incase.

the paint on the car was redone about 2-3 yrs ago and hasnt faded, so i dont think it should be hard to perfectly match it. plus she just wants it took look nice till she can aford a really good paint job.

also do u think the adhestion permotor is needed since the replacement nose we got was new but painted black, but its all sanded down ready for final sandin and priming and paint.

A quart should be more than enough.

AS far as adhesion promoter etc I would ask the paint store, tell them what you are doing and ask what they reccomend.

AS far as a color match the only concern of mine that would cause me to have them scan the actual color is the fact the car was repainted and you can't be sure the brand of red used by the last painter is the same as the red you are using.

In other words, PPG's "Bright red" may not be an exact match to Du Pont or Maaco's "Bright red"

I would test spray a small part, let it dry, and compare it to the rest of the car if you are not sure- that way if you need to have the store tint the paint slightly one way or the other it's no big deal and you don't have to re shoot an entire panel.

Either way, I'm sure it will turn out decent- you never learn if you don't try. Did you paint the black car yourself? It looks great!
