carbon fiber hood YOU CAN BUY RIGHT NOW.

i got sick of hearing about the CF hood issue, so i went and just did some basic lookups..

this is VFN fiberglass:
http://www.vfnfiberglass.com/site.htm

one of the oldest and highquality automotive 'glass companys.

read this page:
http://www.vfnfiberglass.com/carbonfiberstore.htm

hmm, they make CF stuff too.

heres their 3rdgen camaro page:
http://www.vfnfiberglass.com/8292camaro.htm

i popped them a email already (so you dont have to spam them unless you're buying)

Hi Travis. Thanks for stopping by.
Unfortunately because of the size of this mold, we are unable to offer this particular hood in a "cosmetic" carbon fiber....sorry.
The price on the fiberglass bolt on is $360.00 and the weight on this item is about 25lbs. The price on the light weight c/f is $720.00 and this hood will weigh in around 7-9lbs.
If shipped, there would be a crating charge of $20.00 added to the price of the hood.
Unfortunately these items are too large to ship by ups and would instead need to ship by truck freight. Generally the freight charges are paid directly to the freight company upon reciept of your item - unless other arrangements are made with our company prior to shipping.
We recommend having the item delivered to either a business address or to pickup at the nearest freight terminal (which we can help locate for you). Doing one of these two options will save you additional residental delivery charges of about $75.00.
Approx. freight to a business or terminal location will generally range between $60-$80.00 and Approx. freight to a home address will generally range between $140-$170.00.
Thanks again for stopping by and have a great day.
Jean

so there you have it.

want a CF look hood? you're still screwed.
want a LIGHTWEIGHT CF hood? there it is.
want a fiberglass hood? theirs fits pretty damn well.

dude, how does that make us ricers?? i love the look of cf, my personal opinion. If you dont, then fine, why start with the name calling? i have a really big problem with that word being associated with anything that isn't stock.

On the contrary, I'm very interested in a 9 lb. hood and the complete front clip has me thinking too.

1. note the smilie. its a joke.. a kidding sort of ribbing.-- athough if you're truly offended, i ment it.. only because i like picking on people who are easily offended. it makes them go away.

2. i dont like stock 3rdgen anything. trust me, im not a "not stock = suck" guy.. lol. lighten up (this hood would help)

VFN makes a great product IMO..... CrazyN8 just bought a KILLER huge cowl for his WS6. That's not a bad price for a CF hood, but it's the flat hood......no good. Someone needs to make a lightweight CF hood to look like the IROC hood. I hope TPI383 is reading this one..... . If he doesn't make one, I am gonna buy one of his inverted cowls when he gets them done.....

Wow, those doors would be awesome if I could use them on the street... They need safety bars and window gear, but I bet they'd still be really light.

Here's the info I got from the website - - -

I do know that the customer could not tell us enough of how good the fitment was on the car they test fitted the hoods on. the weight reduction is also a large savings...anyhow, like i said let me see what i can do for some photos and if you like your welcome to contact me via ph. at 905-527-6767 and ask to speak with ryan, ive got a lot more info if your interested. thanks for your inquiry.
I'm not in the market (trans am,no money) but it seems like they're willing to business.

Wow, somehow I wasn't subscribed to this thread... sorry guys. I was told to contact Marco at Bordeaux Welding, and he sent me some more pictures and information on the CF hood just the other day. It runs 850.00 Canadian for the CF version, and 450.00 for the fiberglass version. The CF hood is 24lbs. vs. 60lbs. stock.

thers no such thing as a shortage, not on oil, not on whales, not on carbon fibre. the worlds more abundant element, carbon, isnt running dry. its probably the manufacturer of the strands has gone out of business or been bought out which is allowing one company to monolopize the carbon cloth market (look at debeers if you dont believe that it can happen) and therfore raise the price of the cloth by saying that thers a shortage. either that or they can no longer buy it and are scurrying to find another manufacturer, and thier cover story is a worldwide shortage. rant over...

ya CF is the most usefull piece of technology in all aspects. if i had a CF body that only weighed 115LBS id be laughin. not to mention that CF, when polished and done right, can look dam sexy, better than a paint job even. i sure wish i had the money to buy CF, or a shop to do the work as well.
bottom line...im bookmarking that site for future dreams.

ths shortage is simple.

we, the world, currently only have a manufacturing capability of making X amount of CF a year.

the military, Airbus, and a few large contracts currently require Y amount of carbon fiber a year.

currently Y > X.... and Z, the amount warehoused or stocked away... is dwindling fast.

trust me, they're trying to up their capacity, but otherwise at the market level, supply and demand kick in.... and the price of CF is thru the roof.

A quick googling showed this:

http://www.physsci.uci.edu/psnews/?id=199

Seems pretty legit to me. Although Im not sure why demand hasnt necessitated more manufacturing facilities to compensate...

its all a hoax, youll see in a couple of years ther will be news articles on monoplization, and this shortage is deffinately the start of it. soon military and the airline companies are gonna look at other companies, theyll get a certian size and then get bought out. after another couple years micheal moore will make a movie about it (he hasnt put out a crappy movie for a while now).

its no hoax.
they cant make enough of the stuff, and unless you have enough ordering weight to throw around, you're at the bottom of the heap, looking for carbon scraps.

Re: carbon fiber hood YOU CAN BUY RIGHT NOW.

I would like to know more about that so called 9lb version. I would buy it tonight.I DO NOT want the CF look- just the weight and strength so the high price is acceptable to me. I plan to paint it to match the car.1 problem- I JUST WANT A PLAIN OLD FLAT FACTORY LOOKING CF HOOD THAT IS STRONG AND LIGHT WEIGHT WITH LATCH AND HINGE ATTACHMENTS. If that is availiable please someone point me to it and I will order it right this moment if the price is of normal range for CF products- Not like that Japan hood for $3000.

A website or contact details would be handy.
