How's the console lid hinge work?

I just got a console off ebay. It is going to be good after I find a decent lid and clean it up. It also will need a little adhesive around where it's starting to seperate. But what I need to know is, how is the hinge mechanism supposed to be? Both the new one and the old one seem to have hinges that are out of position. They have alot of movement and never seem to work right. Is there a fix for this? Can anyone take a pic of a properly set up hinge from underneath the console so I can see how to do mine. I've decided that putting together a nice fully functional console is gonna be my next resto project.

p.s. Maybe the fact that neither have a lid with good hinges on it is preventing it from working?
