Have you ever done something stupid to your car, you wanted to punch yourself ?

Grrrrr,

So after my car being down for a 6 weeks due to a blown tranny, i finally had enough cash to pick up another t-5 to put into my vert. After spending two days putting the bastard in (had a hell of a time getting the input shaft into the pilot bearing) i finally got everything back together and ready for a test drive, i got into the car and started her up. (Since it had been raining all weekend i had been working in the garage my feet were a little wet from when i went outside to move some jackstands and crap piled up behind the car, plus i was wearing a pair of worn out chuck tailors. ) I pulled the e-brake cable and wasnt ready for the car to move, it was ready to come shooting down the ramps the front tires were on, needless to say i went for the brake instead of the car door and boom, door bent backwards, and me of course fuming. It was a slap in the face after spending two days to get my car back and then in a split second the car gets to go back into the garage for a few months till i find a door and a fender.... grrrrr I guess my point here is two, have you guys ever done something really "stupid" and screwed your car because of it, and 2ndly how hard is it to swap a door and a fender ?

Man it happens, I have not had a problem that bad but especially when you get more people than you working on a project and get tired, sometimes things happen. The worst thing I can think of was putting in tranny and someone else was under the car and was putting in the drive shaft, well he finished up and left, it was really late, so then put in the tranny fluid and started the car. Put it in gear and guess what it never moved, checked fluid, checked shifter cable, crap whats wrong. Well someone didnt put in the drive shaft. .....LOL. Im very lucky to that extent, so it can and will happen. Good luck with your replacement.

Sorry to hear that man, I like to jack the car up rather than use ramps. A few months back my friend was putting a underglow kit on his 3000gt (really nice car, cool body kit and a supercharger!) Well he finished, his hatch was still up, he got in the car, had his foot on the brake, then he let off the e-brake, the car rolled back, hit the spoiler on the garage, and ruined the hatch. Hopefully it'll be less then a few months til you get that fixed up.

well mine was a little worse than that, i was putting in the tranny fluid and my not so mechanically inclined friend was putting in the driveshaft. and i had told him that its simple put this here and tighten these 4 bolts, well i guess he didnt tighten one up all the way, and i was driving it around and snap, the yoke on my freshly rebuilt 9bolt snaps and the drive shaft goes flying out from under the car

Mine wasn't my fault, but still really sucked. I was driving my friends 86 Iroc. Nice car, and I was crossing the highway when a lady ran the light and totalled the car. I pulled up at my friends job in the back of a police car (they were kind enough to give me a ride), my friend was standing outside waiting. I had to explain where his car was. Ouch.

Man that sucks about your door it reminds of chris farley in tommy boy when he bent the door backwards lol was funny in a movie but in real life that would suck. Fenders are real easy to replace, just make sure you get everything lined up good, door I'm not sure on, but it shouldn't be too hard.

That sucks bad! I messed up my 85 sport coupe back in high school. I was following my buddy home and we stopped at a yield sign on a right hand turn, well I saw him start to go, and punched it while looking if the coast was clear. For some reason he stopped and I *** ended him. I was so confused at what happened I did not let off the gas and did a nasty burnout while the front end of my car was stuck under his bumper . I feel your pain. Good luck!

First day I ever drove my 91 RS camaro. Was driving it back from the previous owner. Spun it out on ice in the middle of a state highway. Didn't mess the car up but can say the same for my confidence lol

I let my mother drive the RS once she floored it in a turn did a 180 bounces off the curb.. ruined my 16" z28 wheels and pushed my fender upward about 2" .

mine isnt as bad as the rest but killed me.

my car was just painted about a few months before and me and my dad both went to a local hangout and he parked next to me. i had my door open then for some reason i wasnt paying attention and opened his door up and it chipped my door right on the line and left a nice grey spot and it also chipped his 87 mint IROC with 20k miles always garaged paint on the inside lip of his door. now i always close all doors even if i get out for a second.

I was 16 and just got my license and my dad let me take out his car (89 Iroc). I was quite the corner carver then and I was going up an on ramp to get on the interstate and hit a patch of gravel at about 90. Went around 3 times on the road and then once more in the ditch. It had about 3 week old paint and made it out with nothing but a little crack right at the point of the nose. The cop that showed up just happened to have a GTA so i got outta that ticket and my buddies dad pulled me out. Told my dad i hit the curb in front of autozone and thats why the nose was cracked.

(He still doesn't know what really happened 7 years later)

When it happend i was freakin pissed, but now im laughing, i dont see it being too hard to replace a fender and a door, i think if ive done a tranny swap, engine swap, fuel pump swap, rear end swap this should be a walk in the park eh !

a few years ago I was visiting my girlfriend at college, in Bloomsburg, PA. I live in Easton, PA. so its about an hour drive, well to get on with the story, i drove up for the weekend and i knew my starter was going bad in my 85 Z-28, So I ran some wires from the starter to "jump it" well after i got up there, we went for lunch, came out to start the car and it was a no go. So i popped the hood and tried to jump the starter, still a no go. It was a sunday afternoon and i had to be home to go to work in a few hours. I was like OH S#!* how am i gonna get home, so i punched the top of my fender and dented it, and i almost broke my hand doing it. So we went back to her dorm room and looked through a phone book for a garage, we finally found one, i needed to be towed to the garage, i waited for about an hour for the tow, even though the garage was about 10 minutes from the college. The tow truck finally shows up, its a roll-back, first the driver bent my tailpipes on the street (steep angle on the bed). Then as we are going to the garage a lady pulls out in front of the truck, so he hits the brakes, and BANG, I was like what the heck was that, so I looked out the back window of the tow truck and noticed my car was up against the back of the truck, so we pull over and then he notices that he never chained the car down correctly, so that was strike # 2 for this guy, after he pulled the car back about 2 feet, i seen my custom front license plate was smashed, you guessed it STRIKE 3. I was freaking out at this point. he ended up giving me the tow for free (how nice of him, after causing about 200 dollars worth of damage to my baby) the guys at the garage said it would be about 2 hours to put in a new started, i let them know i had underbody neons on the car before they lifted it up, word of advice, tell any garage you take your car to if you have an underbody neon kit on before they try to lift the car, he told me that most people dont tell them and they end up desrtoying more sets than most people would believe. so any ways about 45 minutes later i heard my car start up, music to my ears. the garage only charged my 100 dollars to put in the new starter, didnt charge labor at all. So after all of that, i get in my car to take my gf back to her dorm, and i tried to start the car (WITH IT ALREADY RUNNING) so i yelled to the guys at the garage to see if they had another starter on standby. so after i left to come home I got pulled over doing 90 in a 65, 4 points and 300 dollars. So that was the worst weekend I can ever remember (cost me about $600 for that weekend, not including gas, food, and spending money)

i've never done something to my car per say. But people have done things to my car that made me want to punch them.

First of all my dad and uncle decided to attempt to pull start my car because it wouldn't turn over while i was in school. I come home and my hood latch piece is bent the opposite way and the radiator support is bent where they put the strap. That didn't bother me so bad as they were trying to help me.

Next I was in the garage working on my car and a female friend decided she was cold and shut the garage door. Well my hatch was up and now i have a huge scratch that runs down my entire decklid and spoiler from the metal bar....

Also had a kid keyed one of my doors at school...

Same friend that shut the door on my hatch, was helping me swap my original seats into the car, crossthreaded the bolt for the bottom seat and kept turning it until it broke the nut that is welded to the floor.

About the worst thing I've done to my car is tear it down to rebuild it just because it was underpowered and the paint sucked. 3 years later, i'm still rebuilding the car.

1. Knowing my automatic shifter cable wasn't adjusted right and it liked to slip into reverse by itself...and then stepping out of the car and having my insurance pay thousands of dollars for my neighbor's shop and me buying a new bumper

2. Going 50 in a blizzard, and me taking out a road sign, buying a new fender, new ground effect

3. Thought seamless fender vents and seamless bumpers would be cool. Just ended up being a lot of wasted time and energy to undo that.

defintetly the worst....I never thought it would take this long but when you get it all torn apart you get very picky to try and get everything perfedt and end up doing 20 times more than you had planned....so glad im nearing the end though....

I took the entire interior out of my car anticipating a T-5 swap... then the kid i was buying it from broke the trans by dropping it. Leaving me with no center console, carpet, seats, or a few other things in my car... lol altough i found out i had a water stash under the carpet....

my first one was in highschool.my car was already lowered and i couldnt make it over this speed bump so i usually always had to wait for the buses to leave before i could cause the speed bump didnt go all the way over to the curb and the bus always parked there.so anyways my friend asked me for a drive home so i said sure why not.so me being stupid thinking i gotta hurry so my friend can get home for work..tried to go between the bus and the speed bump next thing you know my mirror snapped up.so i stopped and backed up abit as im backing up im actually pushing my fender into the buses wheel..oh did i ever lose it

then one night at my house i was trying to leave and usually my sister gives me enough space to back around her car.this time she didnt so i proceed to back around it then suddenly i hear a crack and there is her body kit front bumper in afew pieces and my freshly painted back bumped scratched right up

I let my wife go out for a pack of smokes

I let my wife go out for a pack of smokes with her friend in my 91 z28, I wondered what was taking so long.... suddenly i get a phone call from her screaming oh my god! and her friend in the background screaming louder than her. So I ran to the store about a mile down the road where someone had hit and ran her in ther pasenger rear quarter. She instantly lost control. Mistaking the gas for the brake she floored it and went through the shopping center parking lot, lucky she missed the flower shop and came to a stop. The bumpers in the parking lot killed my month old set of tires, dented my rims, tore up my transmission pan on my year old trans. In addition to the dents from hitting the street sign's and god knows what else besides the truck that rammed her. Of course the girls were hysterical and cried the whole time about how sorry they were. So i called my friend who has a truck to tow me home because the car wouldent start. We then put doughnuts on and draged the car home. Thank god for friends!

The car is fixed now and she NEVER wants to drive it ever again.

when i first started to drive my firebird i took it to school the first day driving it on my own after new paint and all and there was snow only on the grass. i back parked in the only spot left and ended up scraping the paint on the underside of the bumper from SNOW!

another time in my grand am coming home from a club with 3 friends i wasnt paying attention with the snow packed roads and then i saw the highway on ramp real quick so i turned quick and car didnt follow it went straight and i hit the brakes and it just slid into a snow bank. luckily it did pull right out with some effort.

I spent the whole 4th of july weekend sanding my car down to nothing so I could get it all primered. Well I finished it last friday I went and picked up a friend and we went to a part 70 miles away from home. On the way back from the party a truck droped a chain I ran it over it pulled the valve steem off my right rear rim and I slid in to the wall at 65 MPH boy was I pissed. Now I have to replace the left fender the impact bar and front bumper.

I used to not even be able to break the tires loose when my engine was stock so id always floor it on corners just for the hell of it. So Im about to turn right onto a pretty big street(3 lanes) and I floor it and start turning. The tires break loose and i power slide and and swerving back and forth for the next 50 ft. I was in shock and just kept mashing the gas. And eventually I slid into the median and was sitting ontop of the median with cars going by me left and right. Messed up my rims and sliced up my tires since the median was kinda tall. I was yealling at myself the whole way home. Now I take corners lightly lol.

I tore apart my current (not a camaro, thank God) car trying to "fix" the ebrake. My advice: Pull consol, seats, roll back carpet, remove assembly, and just replace the cable. (then tighten and reattach stuff) It's been 3 months or so, I have no dash, my interior is half assembled, and I still don't have a good grip when I pull the brakes (no stopping power)

I have a '93 and after I bought if I went to the gas station and overlooked the bank and cracked the nose of the car just a bit but nothing major. It still made me mad because I had just bought it and got a good deal on it .....oh yeah and I also took my car to mexico and it was raining after about 1000 potholes and unpaved bumpy roads, I think i'm keeping my car out of there lol

We have a winner

I didn't read all the posts but this one will be tough to beat. I grew up on the west coast where temeratures are always mild and you are pretty much free to fill your radiator with water and forget about it. I moved to the east coast at the age of 27 (courtesy of the U.S. Navy). A some point I had a mild coolant leak and just kept periodically refilling it with water. When my first D.C. winter came around I had 100% water and as soon as we had our first freeze of the season my block cracked into two. The result: $2000+ for a new jasper engine (as it was my only car and the Navy kept me much too busy to think about rebuilding it myself).

Flushing $2000 down the toilet... how's that for stupid?

thats exactly how a friend of mine got his 91' RS for prety cheep with a brand new 700r4, last owner had the headgaskets leak, so he kept dumping water in and winter came and cracked the block.

my brother was putting his s-10 on ramps and over shot the top of them (all 4 corners)

both rear corners of the box are trashed, the pass side actually got a couple holes in the wrinkled/bent part from the end of the ramps

front ramps bent the rocker a bit under the doors, then broke
they were really nice metal ramps that you can take the ramp part off so you can have more room to work, so now in gotta reweld those

Here's a few things that make me angry to this day, even though I don't have the car anymore.

I picked up a prestine 92 RS back in 04...perfect polo metallic green exterior, t-tops, Z28 wheels, 52K original miles. Perfect condition in & out pretty much. About the 3rd night or so I had it, some friends and I went down to the beach. We pulled into a 7-11, and while I was pulling in a spot I was talking to my friend who was outside of the car, and was paying close attention to what he was saying. While slowly rolling and talking with him at the same time, I suddenly hear SCRAPE. I back it up, and when I got out there was yellow paint all over my front lip from running over the cement stop at the front of space, that happened to be painted bright yellow.

Now, even worse. Two months later I was just cruising down a main street trying to kill time waiting for this chick to get ready to go out, then I was going to pick her up. While I was cruising, I passed a donut shop that a friend of mine owns, who I hadn't seen in a while. So I asked my friend who was riding shotgun if he wanted to turn around, grab some free donuts, and hang out with a friend of mine for a bit to make the time go by faster. Sure enough he says yes, so I turned around, starting going the opposite direction back down the road and then got into the turning lane. The previous owner that had the car before me had cut just two of the springs, so the car was slammed in the front but raised in the back. Not a good combination to prevent scraping. Anyways, I make a left turn and take it at a slight angle so the front lip doesn't rub. While pulling in, a chick in an Integra just hauled @$$ going towards the same driveway trying to exit while I was trying to enter, and slammed into the door/quarter panel on my side. Stupidest **** ever. If I never would have turned around, it would have never happened. I probably would have been more inclined to have kept that car also.

Well, three days after I got my license, I was driving up to 7-11. I had a buddy of mine in the passenger side. On some of my turns, I like to floor it and power slide around them. Well right after the turn I see a dog, so I try to swerve it, not realizing that my rear tires are still loose. I slid into a speed limit sign on the side of the road. Well, I asked my buddy to reach down the side and see if he could feel any dings. He said "Nope... nope... not there either... no OHH G**!" I kept driving and then realized that my steering wheel was about 30degrees off (it was night time, so you can't exactly see this stuff at first). When I got to the 7-11, my friend got out and said "HOLY S**T" It was one of those times where you don't want to look, but you just have to. My front right fender was screwed up at the very front, the door is dented and scrated pretty much the whole length, and the rear quarter is dented in at the bottom. My front rim was chipped (luckily it was only a stock one), my passenger side mirror was gone, and my alignment was screwed up. Keep in mind, this was right after a turn and the tires were spinning so I couldn't have been going more than 30mph. Never underestimate the strength of a speed limit sign.

The good news: I kicked that speed limit signs a**. My other friend drove me up there later that night, we saw the tire tracks - I went clearly over the sign, and bent it down.

This shows the rear quarter and passenger door. Also not the mirror:

Mine arent nearly as bad as some of these but they still pissed me right off. One day when i was getting out of my car, i grabbed my keys in my left hand and went to shut the door.....with my left hand, keyed my own car. I felt so bad about that, but after looking at it again, its hardly noticeable. Another thing i did was at the parking lot close to where i work. While i was parking i wasnt really paying attention at all, and the front ground effects hit one of the logs (the parking lot is outlined with them). Luckily it had just rained and the log was soggy and forgiving, aside from a broken mounting tab, no damage done.

Oh....one thing that could have been really bad, while driving to work, i almost hit a cop running across the road, the bastard didnt even use a crosswalk.

my worst story involves my beloved firebird as an innocent bystander.

nice day outside, washed/waxed my car in my friends driveway. stood back and admired it for a while, then i went in to watch tv. girlfriend is taking her friend to work and is late. jumps in her dodge neon, opens the garage door and floors it before the door is done opening. misses the door, but got a good 20mph reverse head start and put her taillights right into my drivers door/a-pillar.

i heard the crash and walked outside, didnt see my car but i saw the horrified look on her face (i thought she hit another mailbox) then she looked at me AND TOOK OFF TO WORK!!!!! only then did i see the broken plastic and HUGE dent in my car. she bent the a-pillar, the door, and the freakin FIREWALL!!!! needless to say, my car was beyond totalled.

the make up sex was good that night, but i never really forgave her until next valentines day when she got me my 2002 Suzuki GSX-R 750. it was the cleanest nicest fastest thing ive ever owned. until i got hit by a lady in an escalade, totalled the bike, broke my 2 lower vertebre, ripped open my knee, shattered my elbow and gave me a 3rd degree concussion. 16hrs later i woke up in the trauma center at the ER where the cops were deciding weather or not to mark it as a fatality!

Car was two days old from being painted. I thought I could line up the GTA ground effect on the nose a little better than the body shop did if I just drilled the bracket hole out a little larger.

I drilled right throught the front bumper. I think the whole neighbor hood learned the full extent of my four letter vocabulary.

I had just taken delivery of my 1 owner white 5.7 1987 IROC from the original owner and being friday night
I drove to the donut shop where everyone who was into cars back then used to hang before the evening festivities
would get underway. Imagine 150-200 people hanging
out and I cruise up into the parking lot and very loudly grunch one of those concrete parking blocks with the front GFX while parking.

I had just gotten a beautiful paintjob on my 78 Camaro back when I was in high school ( I'm not telling when that was ) I decided to take it through an automatic car wash. I put the quarters in the machine and pulled up, waiting for it to start, which it never did. So I backed up to see what was up, and put a nice gouge in the left rear fender flare. I was not a happy camper
