opinion for hood choice
I am swapping a GM ramjet 350 for the TBI 305 into my 89 Firebird and need about an 1 1/2 clearance under the hood. I don't like the way the RA's look on the thirdgen and want to avoid the cowl cause there are just too many of them around. I am not sure if the power bulge would give me enough in the right spot. Thats what I would like to have or something similar. Any suggestions and where a good place to find something would help.
I would like to have something that would be not as noticeable to someone less familiar with thirdgens

Well, you kinda eliminated a lot of options there, but the only other thing i can think of is the ss hood, i really never see them on firebirds though, i have no idea how they look. Hawks sells them, i know that much, and i think 1 or 2 people around here have it, maybe they can show you. Im pretty sure it frees up some space under the hood too.
Edit: Just thought of another potential hood: the twin turbo. I dont know much about it but i think its similar to a cowl but also has holes where the would-be turbos could be. Kinda intimidating lookin.

a power bulge hood will not give you enough room.. i had an edelbrock EPS manifold, edelbrock EPS 800 carb and a K&N extreme filter and it wouldnt fit under the hood.. the filter is not a drop-base.. its 9/16th above the carb.. do what i did.. cut the hole on a base firebird hood.. and put something over it.. shipping for aftermarket hoods to hawaii is too expensive.. this "mod" cost me less than a full tank of gas.. the pics are with a victor jr. and a 1" spacer.. idk why, but the motor is shifted to one side..

From that point of view it looks a bit um..how do i say it polite like...ghetto? But i mean thats just my thoughts about it good idea but mayby if it was sorta shaded into the hood a little better not so um tacky looking it would be awesome maby bondo the sides and seal it in from the sides and back could you supply a side view of it? Maby i just cant tell from the front view set up. Also might not look bad putting some sort of stainless steel grill or something to cover the bland look from the front just an idea (no offence intended btw)

i honestly dont care about the looks.. it gets the job done.. it also has a small ram-air effect .. and trust me, it does look kinda ghetto.. it was pretty much free to do.. i had the steel, had the Bondo, the welder, and the hood.. if it didnt cost $200-$300 for shipping a fiberglass hood to hawaii, i would have one.. i may have to order a cowl soon because the aircleaner wing nut just barely clears top of the scoop.. and i might be adding a nitrous plate this august for a street shootout at the track..

I always liked the jongbloed hoods on the camaros...
A 3 inch cowl would look good, anybody able to find them in the jongbloed style for birds, thatd look good a little less angular then a normal cowl

A jongbloed hood would look good if I could find one I can afford. I did a little trial and error but found the stock flat hood gives me about 1/2 in if I modify the underhood bracing. I cut out a section about the size of a baseball card. I know it isn't much but it'll have to do till I come up with something I like. I know my options are slim, fortunately I work with a guy who used to run a body shop and has some contacts to maybe build what I want.
We'll see what happens when the a horse or a rice burner gets dusted by the tail feathers of this bird
Thanks

Is that a real hood or is that a photochop? Details? I really like that which is rare with aftermarket 3rd gen hoods, and I really don’t like how angular most cowl hoods are, they just don’t work with the lines of the cars… (especially the camaros have some angular lines, but the lines don’t line up…)

I think you ought to look up the "Daytona" hood. It had a nice raise in the middle but not too high. Nice style too...
