How shaved is too shaved?

I can't decide...I'm currently in the process of shaving my handles and locks. The right side is done, and I hope to get the left finished up tonight. **BTW...On a side note, that's a whole new problem for me! I always leave my keys in the car at home and at work...I gotta get out of that habit, and fast! Keys (or at least key chain) in car = walking home, now! I gotta hide a left door opener button somewhere, I guess.**Anyway, I am planning to shave the side markers as well. I want to remove the body side moulding, but my brother says "leave it, or it'll look like a sheet of plywood hanging on the side of the car where the door used to be." I plan to two-tone it, very similar to Jekyl & Hyde's Iroc...black on top, '07 Vette Atomic Orange on the bottom, with a silver 3/8"-ish divider pinstripe. I perrsonally believe the paint will break it up enough to support the clean shaven look of the body, but I'm looking for opinions. Let me know what you guys are thinking. Thanks!

Have you looked into alternatives to shaving the parts? Like clear side markers, blacked out side markers, 4th gen firebird side moldings. 4th gen side moldings are the exact same length as 3rd gen side moldings, its just funny nobody's put them on yet.

The car will still look awesome if you shave those parts but its nice to have people seeing you turning or protecting yourself from a couple door dings.

Shave the radio antenna though, that helps out a ton with looks. If you still want a radio then put the antenna sideways underneath the dash.

I am a very big fan of shaved stuff! If you went as fas as removing the handles and locks I believe the door trim has to be removed. The door trim should only be on cars that are daily driven - Mine is coming off soon!!!

If I shaved the side markers, I might be persuaded (aka ticket, maybe) to put a set of Truck Lite model 33's in the lower part of the ground effects. I've got a few here at work...You drill a 3/4" hole and pop 'em in there, epoxy from the backside and it's done. As for door dings, 99% of the time it's either at home in the garage, or here at work (nothing on one side, my brother on the other side of it). The other 1% would be where I'd get dinged though, no doubt!
Here's the lights...they look like a large plastic rivet head, really. With a single diode in them, they are DOT approved for clearance and marker light applications. Pretty cool.

Don't put those lights in!!!! I think that it would look cheesy, and factory lights would be better than those.

Man glad I read through this...Thought I was on the wrong forum at work.
.

I agree on the lights...don't do it.
I have seen a 3rd gen that looked pretty sweet with the door handles gone.

Definately shave the side moldings if you are sure you'll never park next to anyone. I'd keep the sidemarkers just because they're a huge visibility point from the side. Although again, if the car is going to be show only, I think you should shave them as well. Good luck with your car!

Leave the marker lights...I've photochopped my car, and it looks too barren. Something missing on our cars...

Instead of shaved handles (I know too late, since you've done one side) is flush (C/K, S10) handles. Without handles, a track won't let you run (not even drag racing), since there would be no mechanical way to open your doors if they needed to, like in a wreck.

Shave the antenna. Mine worked just fine, by laying the antenna under the dash pad.

Thanks for the replies!I've already got the antenna off...fillin' that hole tonight, too. I have XM and I bet I've listened to FM for about 10 minutes total since last July when I got the car. Yeah...I do already have one side done on the handles...besides...if I'm going to go to the trouble of doing something, I'm takin' 'em all the way off! As for track regs...I'm not too concerned about that. It will likely never hit the track at all. I already know it's slow as crap, I don't have to prove it with numbers!

Here's a pic of how it's sitting outside right now. I got a spray can mixed up to "match" the car so I mmight be able to fly under the radar of being a work in progress. I don't wanna roll primer!

Why is it when I use quotation marks it gets all funky? And when I try to post a pic it won't let me push ENTER and drop the pic to the next line. And the smilies aren't working for me, either.????????????

that looks pretty sick! I would leave the side markers for sure, and I think the molding would look killer on or off, but the shaved handles looks great!

Do you have an alarm on your car? If not you might want to consider installing a keyless alarm system with some door poppers to open you door with the remote that way you will never have to worry about locking your self out.

I'm curious how else you could even get in a car with shaved handles other than using door poppers (and without crawling through the hatch).

With shaved door handles you always have to worry about locking your self out. If the battery goes dead... NO electronic door "poppers" solenoids! This is the main reason most people don't shave the handles on their daily drivers.

EXACTLY! Been there, done that. Never again! That's why I like the body colored flush mounts, like my 92 RS was, and my GTA will get...some day.

Even with shaved door handles, why crawl through the trunk if something minor happens like a dead battery? Relocate the battery to the trunk. Install an extra window switch and door popper switch in the rear trunk area that has constant +12V powering it. That trunk glove box would be great for those. If you can wire up remote keyless doors, you can probably wire these extra things up.

you know, ive always been under the assumption that its little things that do it, not big things. if you shave everything, its gonna stick out like a sore thumb. shave the locks, its personal preferance to shave the doors (personally i think i need to see something there), and dont shave the side markers. instead go with clear markers. camaros are too masculine in design to be completely shaved. all the straight bodyparts look funny.

but thats my opinion...

Without going off on a tangent, the n00b has an idea to add to this.
If you're going to do a full shave, why not put a pull cable for the door or rear hatch?

Might as well finish it off. Hinge the talight housing, and route your gas filler neck out the back there.

EXACTLY they make a emergency door popper kit that is cable operated for if your battery does go dead.

They make a kit like this for old school 57chevys etc. They are electronic and are actually pretty bad as$. might be cool in a 3rdgen also.

That's what I'd like to do on my GTA, but the talilights would hafta slide straight out, then hinge or slide sideways, since they are pretty much recesed/flush.

I shaved my side markers and I LOVE it. I also got rid of my side markers, door moldings and locks. also no antenna. Looks SLEEK. I love it.

I painted my door handles the same color as the car, so they don't stick out as much. It is a street car that is very impractical. haha. Thats the way i like it for now.

Re: How shaved is too shaved?

The main plus to shaving these cars are the outrageously large hatches. You leave the lock there which is a manual lock, and keep a spare door key in your wallet. All else fails, you crawl in. It's better than having to call a locksmith. Camaros are more awesome, as our hatch key is hidden by the license plate. Which I didn't realize until I changed the plates on my car. >.<
