Car was hit today

My car was parked in a parking lot and a Ford F350 literally ran over my driver side fender, hood, and front end. The fender is smashed in all the way to the battery area. I'm taking the car for an estimate tomorrow, is there anything in particular I shuld note or point out like the core support or inner fender wells and what not?

Re: Car was hit today

If your fender is laying on your battery then your frome in that area is tweaked

Frame machine needed to check it properly

You want to know what to look for? EVERYTHING. If a moron runs over your car, I'd pick every little scratch and dent and make him pay. Though we all hope its not totaled.

The repairs are going to exceed blue book by a lot. The guys who guessed totalled are unfortunately probably right.

Re: Car was hit today

dont be so sure...if you get an estimator and insurance agent who like muscle cars, your lookin pretty sweet. a while back i got in a big accident...my car was worth about 4000 buks...but because the estimator and claim adjustor (insurance guy) liked camaros, they decided to fix it. it cost 5500 buks to fix, and i didnt pay a DIME.

so dont go giving up just yet.

haha yeah you made it sound a lot worse than it really is. my brother had the same problem with his '91 prelude. parked in a spot and some crazy chick in an f150 ran over the driver side front of it. and you don't really have to point anything out to an insurance adjuster, they're usually trained in collision repair and know exactly what to look for.

Car: Used to drive a camaro
Re: Car was hit today

I had damage very similiar to what you're showing almost 13 years ago. After a 72 hour bender of Connecticut casinos and a rash trip to Montreal and everything that city entails I drove straight back to CT. I put my PS side into a jersey barrier at about 40-45. $1600 later, I had a straightened frame, battery, new aftermarket primered fender, aftermarket primered nose and a few other tweaks . I had to get it painted afterwords. I agree with Deadbird and would call that a slight bang...not totalled. Good luck with getting it back to the way you want it.

LOL that's nothing, that's probably a $1000-1200 repair by a collision shop. You made it sound like a monster truck drove over your car and flattened it.

"Ran over" and "slightly bumped" are entirely different. New fender, you could probably repair the bumper, and some paint. Your hood wasn't even damaged!

The Estimate guy said that the damage was "Way over threshold", and had he not been a Camaro enthusiast he probably would have totaled it.
(Good Man )

I'm very thankful that its not totaled, I'll make sure I post some after-shots. Too bad the new camaro isn't here yet. it'd be one hell of a rental car .

Throw me some input, am I being low-balled or anything? I was told by some friends that I should always get a second estimate.

Thanks for helping me through this fellas!

Re: Car was hit today

That price looks high, but is in line for what a shop will bill insurance for a repair like that (hell I had an Acura rear bumper cover replaced and painted, nothing blended or anything, and they billed my insurance $1200, lol), but that is a ton of money for a bumper and fender replacement and repaint. If they are using made in USA replacement parts it's probably reasonable, but most shops will use $125 made in china fenders, when I was buying repro body panels they guy said he sells mostly for insurance repairs.

haha I'm very sorry for defaming the work "literally"

Well the estimate guy said that there were no NOS parts available for it due to its age so he would have to order aftermarket stuff, he quoted me at $450 a fender. But its not my insurance that's paying for it so I could care less haha. The important thing is that my entire front clip will have fresh paint

Re: Car was hit today

I spoke with the insurance company today, only to be told very bad news.

Due to the previous damage to the pass. side, along with the recent damage, the adjuster has informed me that the car will most likely be totalled. My car is a 1991 Camaro RS with the 3.1l v6 and the 4spd O/D tranny. N.A.D.A. gives it a book value of $1900 due to the 170k miles on it. I really don't want to lose my car, unless it gets me another one. Is the insurance company looking for a way out or should I notify my insurance of this?

A 91 V6 with very high miles is what it is. V8 third gens can be had pretty cheap in decent shape, if they total it, you can "upgrade" with whatever they settle w/ you for (hopefully it's a decent amount)

Re: Car was hit today

I can only pray, I don't think I could drive anything other than a camaro...

The car does carry significant sentimental value with me and my father. He bought it for me as a graduation gift, just in time for prom because my mother wouldn't help me any. Granted he only paid $500 for it, but how often do you come across a drivable camaro for that?

I just hope I don't get one of those "this is how it's going to be" adjusters...

Any advice on dealing with this guy would be greatly appreciated, especially from other experienced owners.

Always reject the first offer, they can always do better. Then buy it back for a measley amount and either fix it yourself with $$ to spare or part it out with $$ to spare. I paid $1500 for my old IROC and ended up with over $4100 after 2 wrecks (neither my fault) and bought it back for $200, they like it when its bought back, less they have to spend to get rid of it.

Re: Car was hit today

I completely agree with the guys above, see exactly what your options are.
And if you really like the car, see what the insurance company gives you and repair it yourself. Personally I had a similiar accident only my car was actually hit "hard" I had a to get a new hood, fender, bumper, and support bar for the bumper (i think their called u-bras) and had the whole front of the car painted. Altogether labour and parts and paint for $1900 cdn. Personally if you look for the parts yourself and get a half decent paint job on there, it will probably be under 1000 -1200 to fix. All the best in your fix, if you need parts check out the restoration section of this website. This site is awesome and I'm pretty sure the guys can help you find parts for a very reasonable price.

Good luck

Pat

Re: Car was hit today

hey man that car is sentimental to you,but don't let them know it,let them total it,collect the money, and buy it back from them, usually at 30%,fix it yourself, case in point

of course the labor cost would have stopped this project, but labor was free,@ $1000 to put it back to this shape, but had to pay 800 to get it from insurance, you should be able to get yours back way cheaper than that

Re: Car was hit today

Thanks Hwcoll95, seeing your car come back to life like that has given me new hope. I'm worried about the whole "salvage title" deal. I was hoping I could maintain this car long enough to garage and rebuild for my future son. Kind of like what my dad did for me. I hope though that I will make out well enough from this to buy a separate camaro and keep mine as a back yard project.

My next post should be after the adjusters visit. I will post the outcome as soon as I know it.

Cross your fingers gentlemen of thirdgen....

Axle/Gears: 3.73 Gov lock
Re: Car was hit today

Well they didn't total the car. Instead they cut me a check for $1800. I then purchased a used fender from a junk yard and also a new passenger side door to fix some previous damage. Total cost so far is $200. Car is now ready to be sanded and painted.

Re: Car was hit today

your on the right path, getting the correct door and fender for 200. I think 1,800 should be enough to get your car back into great shape.

Good luck with your fix

Re: Car was hit today

That is great they didnt total your car man, I am going to get my 89 camaro this weekend; I live in connecticut and the car is at my uncles garage in richmond va. I bought the car last august and had it for three days and the engine blew up. I bought the replacement engine for 400 dollars from a salvage yard that tested the engine for me. it came out of an 89 caprice (I think cop car) because after my uncle put the engine in it and tested it. He said the car had alot more power than before and it sounded nice. The great thing was the replacement engine has the same amount of miles as the original. 94k, I am putting full coverage on the car and not liability. I am also going to look for another camaro incase this one gets totaled. Not trying to hijack your thread but was happy another camaro is going to be back on the road.
