i took the front windshield out of my camaro and i am now trying to replace it, but im having trouble removing the replacing window without cracking it, how can i remove the windshield without damaging it?
I assume you mean pulling a perfectly good glass? You need something like a piano wire, to run through the edge, and "saw" the sealer/adhesive. Getting the wire through the edge, to begin with, will be the fun (NOT!) part.
I used a special windshield tool was like a bent blade with a wire attached to it. Poured a little wax and grease remover down in the channel and that helped it go much easier also.
i would not bother doing it your self. you run into the rist of 1) breaking the glass which will cost you alot more money than you want ) having water leaks which is deff no good. Calling a glass guy to come and do it is well worth the 75 to a 100 bucks and he will have it done in minutes. I would say you are better off having him do it where the work will be gauranteed/ and have a warranty. And he should be able to come anywhere where you are located. And if he breaks the glass he pays for it not you!! just my 2 cents. I think paying 75 bucks saves time and alot of hassel
I've did it twice - once on a 3rd gen and once on my 68 (original glass). I bought the wire at Napa. One person on the inside, one on the outside - with gloves since the wire can hurt and the friction will melt the sealant and it will get all over your hands. Saw the wire back and forth all the way around the edge. Go slow and if the window don't lift out easily, don't pull it. They crack amazingly easily. Start the wire at one of the bottom corners where there is no lip in the way (behind the hood). You can actually heat the wire up a bit to melt the seal and push it through.
If it's just a quick replace, then you probably are better off paying. Both my cars were going through more extensive work and the glass is staying out for a while. If you do it yourself, Napa has a rope seal that I heard is better than using the caulk.
I hate to bump such an old thread but I will be undergoing this project of pulling off my windshield. Reason being I'm having the Ttop roof refiberglassed and the windshield resealed to stop all my leaks in the car. Im going to have about 3 people to help me out with this, but will be my first time attempting to do this. I just need a few tips on pulling it off, and if anyone has some tips for putting it back in, id appreciate it. I will be trying to reuse the original windshield, but in case it does crack we have sources to pick up others, but would like to not have to do so.

Piano wire....well, the equivalent. SUPER thin wire, but strong, single strand. A body shopy supply place probably has one. Maybe an auto body shop. If you can start it through the seal, take your time, and you might be able to saw through the sealant, going around slowly. The next trip, would be to lift it out, without stressing 1 point, causing it to crack.
I may be over paranoid here. I just don't like big glass windshields.
3rd gens are easy to do the windshield.....the only place that has the black sealer is around the bottom........the top is like some kind of ribbon seal......two guys can cut one out easy......the big deal is actualy moving the
the glass from the car to the place u want to store it.......(a 55 gallon trtash can works well) just make sure you place the glass with the contours pointing upward so downward stress dont crack the glass
