epoxy primer question.
im going to start some primer work soon, my wifes brother works at a local paint store and brought me home a gallon of omni epoxy primer with the activator. my question is, when im ready to mix some primer is there a certain amount of time i have to let it set before spraying? is there a chemical mixing time i have to meet is what im asking before i can spray it. this stuff came with a mixing ratio but no directions.
thanks!
thanks!

Re: epoxy primer question.
theres no time you need to wait, but I'd recommend running the primer through a strainer before spraying it so it wont clog the gun.

Re: epoxy primer question.
Have your wife get a spec. sheet from her brother. It will be just one page.
It has the dry times and Pot Life (how long it lasts once mixed) and get some
paint strainers and mixing sticks while she's there.

Re: epoxy primer question.
What you need is a technical data sheet.
I work for a company that makes their own products.I have used our epoxy primer on my car and the mix was 4;1 and needed to let the mixture sit for about 25-30 min. before use.
Don't know how similar your primer is but if the mixing instr. are the same my guess is that the wait time will be the same.
If not,you should request a technical data sheet from your wifes brother.
Forgot to mention, there is a potlife of 8 hours,so only mix what you will use in one day.

Re: epoxy primer question.
omni (shopline) can be sprayed as soon as mixed. we use alot of this stuff at school. might have to use a lil more than"top of the line" stuff but its just as good.

Re: epoxy primer question.
there is a time on a lot of epoxy primers. a lot say you need to mix the activator in and wait 15-30 minutes before spraying. if you don't, its not the end of the world but it might not harden all the way or as fast.
get the part # and get a printout from the paint store.
I used shopline a few times before and it did need to sit before spraying for a while.
but like the other guy said, dont get any activator in the primer you wont be using, dont stick the paint stick back in there, and dont pour back in the mixed primer you dont use.

Re: epoxy primer question.
i wont put any unused back. my pans are to do some priming tomarrow on a hood and door. the product is omni au epoxy primer mp170, and the activator is omni au epoxy primer catalyst, when he brought it home all i recieved was 1 gallon primer 2 quarts catalyst. the back of the primer does say ration of 2:1 i guess i should get a sheet on it. i also dont know how long between coats, incase i feel the need for a second coat.

I paint cars for a living and have never heard of letting it sit before spraying it. You should let it sit before you apply the base to the car but not before. Mix it and spray.
I hope you didnt buy Omni Base, you will not be happy 3 months after you paint it.

Re: epoxy primer question.
found the ob11 for the omni epoxy primer. is this stuff pretty decent? ive heard mixed reviews

Re: epoxy primer question.
I also paint cars for a living, and sprayed some of this stuff recently and if memory serves me correctly it advised to let the primer and activator sit after mixing for a while before spraying. I dont know why, and I had never seen it before, but I'm pretty sure it did.
omni paint is pretty shitty, wouldn't put it on anything you wanted to last a long time, cover easily, or look great or match close... yeah and their black is total ****. omni black is actually brown, dont use it. but their primers are decent enough.
edit: the sheet doesnt say anything so I guess this isn't necessary for this primer. Also, I think it is a different # from the one I used. anyways, you're good to go.

Re: epoxy primer question.
the only thing I ever had to let sit before spraying it was single stage if I remember correctly.

Re: epoxy primer question.
Not even single stage have I let sit before spraying. Thats rediculus. It will all harder when its sprayed out in thin layers on the panel.
Ive been painting for 10 years and have never heard any of this. Maybe you guys are reading and understanding it wrong.

Re: epoxy primer question.
I looked up the same exact # on the PPG site and got this
https://buyat.ppg.com/refinishProduc...f-33daba1215bd
under mixing ratio it says allow 15 minute induction period before spraying. maybe I am just a young painter and misunderstanding though.

Re: epoxy primer question.
4:1? but it says 2:1, wouldnt 4:1 be to thick? or take to long to dry?

Re: epoxy primer question.
I wouldn't add reducer to epoxy primer unless you are spraying with any tip smaller than a 1.5, I might add a little but just a touch.
you read the sheet, do what it says. ppg knows best how to spray the product they formulated.

Re: epoxy primer question.
Hmm, I guess you're using different ep.
The stuff we use at my school/body shop has to be mixed 4:1
But if you're product says otherwise, I strongly suggest listening to it vs. a 17 year old auto body student
