Hey all,

I have some new body panels that need to be put on my 91RS (front bumper cover, both fenders, hood, and chin spoiler). What can I put onto the metal peices (hood and fenders) to keep them from rusting until I can save up enough to get the whole car painted?

I have no body work knowledge or tools, so would something like the Duplicolor spray cans work?

are the metal panels new store bought or junk yards or ebay etc... basically new or used?

if brand new they should be black or gray and that means they already have primer on them which is all you need as long as the primer hasnt been scracthed off in small areas. but also it wont stop rust forever. im not sure if you should add more primer from any auto store spray can as a temporary seal or what.

but i would suggest you put the parts in the basement of the house or somewhere where there isnt alot of outside moisture.

basicaly the sooner u get the car painted the better. and i did my car as a first time painter and it came out very nice. if the car is in good condition just line up the parts tape off anything u dont want painted go to a auto paint store ask alot of questions and you prolly have a nice looking car for a fraction of the cost it would take a pro to do it.

The parts are brand new aftermarket parts, so they are smooth black and not bare metal... I didn't know if it was a primer or not. I have never seen a primer so smooth, but I have also never seen any automotive primers.

If those are primered, then how long will it "resist" rust effictively?

Right now, the parts are in my storage locker, but I was wanting to get them on the car since I need to free up a little room in my locker.

EDIT- They should stay rust free for months.

The black coating that comes on new parts will not stand up to the elements. It will bake/wear off and start to form rust. Scuff the parts with a red scotch brite pad and spray them with duplicolor primer and paint. That will help it last much longer. The plastic parts will be OK as-is.
