Mixing bumpers from different years, need help

Hey guys, I have a 1983 Camaro. I don't know the trim, because it has a Berlinetta front bumper, Z28 badge on the dash, and no other badges.

I want this front bumper/lip combination.

This is what I currently have-

My camaro before paint:

Side view after paint:

So can I take that first pictures bumper and install that on my 83? Because I keep searching for OEM bumper covers for a 1983 camaro, and that combination never seems to come up? They are the same, width/length, correct? If the mounting holes are different, I can fix that.

Can some body shed some light on this for me?

The ones on the red car were 91-92 only.

So if I buy that front bumper and lip, will it fit on my 1983?

I believe you have to cut little notches in the fenders for the lower spoiler to fasten to. Other than that I don't know. I have only worked on one Camaro and it happened to be a 91.

How does it attach? Screws? Or is it like those plastic tabs you find in the interior?

It has little tabs that stick through the fenders. I don't remember what holds them on. It was five years ago and I have only worked on one Camaro since then and it was nowhere near the front. It was a fuel pump.

Ok, well thanks for all your help.

They'll swap, you may just need to drill new ground fx holes, and/or fill the old mounting holes.

Not sure, but I think the mount bars & plastic impact strips are the same or at least, interchangeable. But they'll definately bolt up, without changing the mounts..

you can actually use a 1985-1990 or a 1991-1992 front bumper. The only difference is in the ground effects...which will work on either bumper.

Oh, I never noticed that.

Do the ground effects mount the same?

Give a PM to 83Z28BlackBetty (Jake), he just finished that same conversion last summer. All he lacks are the trim pieces for the doors.

Re: Mixing bumpers from different years, need help

hey, Al is right. i did this 2 summers ago actually. There are 2 main components, the bumper cover and the lower spoiler. the bumper cover is the same from 1985 to 1992. The lower spoiler you want is referred to as the aero style and only came in 1991 and 1992.

You will need to find a bumper from a 1985-92 car and the spoiler. The bumper cover bolts directly on using 3 bolts on each side that come through the fender, you need to reach your arm up inside the wheel well and find them (total PITA) then the lower spoiler bolts right on to the bumper cover. the part about the notches is where the scoops attach to the fender (right infront of the wheel) i didn't cut notches in mine, i used small machine screws to screw it in from whithin the wheel well. this held it in place much tighter although it is not the stock way to do it. Check out my car domain page, there are tons of pics there. (click on the pic in my sig)

If you need any more help please ask, just shoot me a pm, i try to check frequently.

Re: Mixing bumpers from different years, need help

If the impact bar is the same as an '83 Z28, the later impact bar and absorber will be needed too.

BTW, I find it's easier for me to remove the upper bumper cover to fender bolts by using a swivel and extension from inside the engine compartment. Everyone has their own preferred way though.
