Hood cable giving me hard time

When I got my GTA my hood cable was on the verge of rotting away in a few places, so I replaced it with one that was in good shape. It worked, though not as good as I had hoped, until a few days ago I went to open the hood and nothing happened at all. I pulled the handle back, and it stayed back. Tried pushing and pulling it, pounding away on the hood, finally gave up and crawled under the car and opened it that way. Turned out the end of the cable had somehow come out of the clip that holds it to the latch. Put it back in, and now it doesnt seem to want to come out all the way. I havn't shut the hood, but if I pull on the handle in the car it doesnt feel right, and it doesnt look like this is going to work. Is there any specific way to set the hood cable right? Is there a certain way you have to run the cable for it to work right? Thanks

Re: Hood cable giving me hard time

As long as there are no sharp bends or kinks in the cable, I would think it would work fine. I would also try greasing the hood latch assembly, that's a common cause for it sticking. You can test the latch without closing the hood, to make it easier. Look at the bottom of the hood, at the metal loop that the latch grabs. Now find a metal rod or pipe (ratchet handles work well) that's close to the same diameter, and push it down into the latch, just like the hood would. It should latch all the way, and when you pull the handle, it should release cleanly. If not, you should be able to slide it out, and try again. Also, if I'm not mistaken, there is a little bit of adjustment in the latch bolts, it might be worth adjusting.
