Working headlight covers on Camaros
Has anyone tried to make working headlight covers for 3rd gen Camaros? I see quite a few pics of Camaros with plastic covers held on with velcro. I was just curious to see if anyone has thought of doing a project like this.

Re: Working headlight covers on Camaros
Already lost my 3rd set in the wind... I had the GTS ones... I was thinking of using like a bunch of "L" brackets attached with adhesive to hold the plastic covers in place so they don't wobble in the wind and are solid... I'll figure something out for sure and post pics soon

are you looking for a way to attach the plastic covers that works? or a way to make your own covers?

Re: Working headlight covers on Camaros
When I installed my GTS covers, having lost a pair before myself, I drilled a small hole in the middle of each L bracket and installed the covers then drilled through them as well. Using a small black wood type screw I snug tightened them. They stayed this way for about 6 years but still lost one(including L bracket) to the wind again. I now have two covers for the same side,LOL.

Yeha i was talkin about the plastic GTS covers...
Also, I don't want to drill through anything, it would just destroy the original body peice...
I was thinking that if you had a bunch of L brackets then it would be extra secure on all sides, and i would use tons of adhesive stuff

No I did not mean drill anything on the camaro nosepiece just the little 3 inch long black L Brackets that 3M stick to the actual nosepiece. Sorry for any confusion. You are just securing them a tad better than how they were designed

Re: Working headlight covers on Camaros
i have not ever seen these on a car but what if instead of securing them better, you change the way the air moves around them. i mean if they are flying off it has to be because air is getting under that bottom edge and slowly pulling them up. so what if you smoothed out that edge by covering the seam with some electical tape or somthing. i would not use electrical tape on my car but you get the idea. would this work?

Re: Working headlight covers on Camaros
To be 100% honest, when my last one flew off I didn't miss it. They look good installed for maybe a show but driving at night(w/ them on) in my older age was killing me. The way they are put on, you stick the L brackets on first then when left and right side is secured you flex the cover and install it. Depending on how your hood fits to your nose piece sometimes it presses down(on top of smokey headlight cover) just enough to let air under as you mentioned. Another different shaped brackett for the bottom should fix it, not sure why they haven't figured that out?

Re: Working headlight covers on Camaros
You're right, mine were installed about as perfect as you can get and it happened to me(buying another set). I remember trying to order just one and they(GTS) wouldn't do it,,,imagine that,,LOL
one more bit of info, take a hair dryer and heat the crappy little GTS decals up, they'll peel right off.

Re: Working headlight covers on Camaros
Well what I am talking about is taking like the working Firebird covers and put them on a Camaro...or make your own vacuum powered ones and put them on. Not that I would ever do that with my Camaro if I ever get one. I was just curious if someone ever tried.

I wouldnt do the mod myself (Not to my car anyway) but if I were to do it, I would go to a junkyard and get the factory headlight doors from a 1990 or so Chrysler le-baron. They are electric and look to be about the right size... Now, I'm curious!!! LOL, anyone?

Re: Working headlight covers on Camaros
When I purchased my camaro new in 1984, I went to a local chevy dealer that specialized in GM parts for euro spec chevys. Turns out GM made a set of "factory" headlight covers for 3rd gens. I purchased a set $150. from the parts dept. It came with all mounting hardware and fit the car perfect. They were designed to be removable only with the hood open. Once the hood was closed it was impossible to remove them without breaking them. They were great! I wish i still had them and their P/N. They finally got scratched up over the years of driving so I got rid of them. I've been looking for another set for over 10 years now.

I have an old camaro book that has a picture of an early thirdgen with headlight covers. The picture looked like it was taken in Europe.

Re: Working headlight covers on Camaros
A friend of mine took the headlight covers off his dads new "at the time" 91 chevrolet truck and tried them on his 88 camaro. They fit directly onto the headlights instead of the buckets. They snapped right on without any screws or 3M tape.
The great part is there will be 4 in a set. So if you loose one, you have an extra pair.

I plan on doing a projection HID retro someday, and really don't want to risk another rock hitting my headlights and then having to redo them all over again.
I would really like to see these OEM ones installed, and if they'll fit a 85-92 bumper too.

The clear ones look nice, and can help protect the actual headlights. It's just the GTS ones have a crappy mounting system.

Re: Working headlight covers on Camaros
I emailed the guy who is selling them, and he says you have to drill holes in your bumper to install them
I don't think I want to do that.
RWB____s, when you get yours and get them installed. Could you take some pics and post them?
I want to see where the holes need to be drilled. I'm not really too keen in drilling holes in the bumper.

Re: Working headlight covers on Camaros
Wow this is an old post.. I still haven't got around to it because I was going to do it after the car got painted, then life kicked in and funds got low, and I might just install it anyway. But I would drill through the headlight frame and attach it to two parts of the headlight to securely attach it, and then use L brackets to hold it on the sides, and on the bottom and sides I would use black caulking to seal it and hold it even more in place.

Did you ever use the oem covers? I need a set as my car had them and got stolen the day I bought the 17 years ago. I still have the holes and top slots

Re: Working headlight covers on Camaros
after considering options, i drilled two holes thru each cover and into the bumper fascia...i figured if i got tired of the covers, i would fill n paint the headlight buckets back to stock..i, myself like the finished look...and i've done 130mph without a problem.....
