Please help need ideas from painters

I painted my car 8 months ago. It is ppg bc/cc system. the color is a custom mix of Cobalt blue metallic mixed with Avenger Blue pearl. I love the color but at 800 a gallon i can't afford to repaint.

First off while looking at the clear it looks like there are alot of dry spots, and thin spots in the clear. Other areas of the clear are horribly orange pealed. I know that it needs to be wetsanded and buffed.

Secondly i had my rear hatch shock mount broke, which cause the rear hatch to shatter and chip and scratch the hell out of the rear of my car.

Now I was thinking that i would sand out the scratches and the chips so that they are flat, and then airbrush some bc into it. Then i was going to reclear the whole car. The car has been inside and covered since it was painted so im not worrying about the fade, and it think that if I air brush the color on the panel, and fan it out it should help get the color to match better I know that it wont be perfect but it will be better than being chipped.

Will this work for one.
Two since i need to reclear the car, I know that i should scuff the clear up on the car so that it will stick, should I wet sand all the orange peel out before i reclear or just give it a light scuff. As I mentioned before it looks like there are some very thin spots, and dry spots, so I am afraid that I will sand though in some spots.

And lastly i have two tiney little dings in my door that i missed while doing the body work, can I touch then up now, and just airbrush the touch up area's and reclear, Or do you guys think that I am better with a repaint of those particular pannels. I have enough base left to airbrush a few touch ups, but if i have to repaint large areas, its really gonna cost me. So please any help or ideas are appreciated.

well yes you need to wet sand the clear and reclear the car if there is lots of thin spots, as for using an airbrush to shoot pearl paint, well sadly it usualy doesnt let the pearl lay the same as shooting out of a big gun.

you should be able to get away with a mini touch up gun though after you skuff it all you have to have your chips 100% flat cause the pearl will magnify the mark.

as for dents its a full body work job on those areas but since your doing a reclear if you have a pint of paint left you should be able to touch it up with the mini, not an airbrush after ding the body work just feather it all in.

when wet sanding, do i have to take the peel out before respraying or just scuff it. Just asking because I really don't want to risk cutting through the light areas if i can aviod it. and if using a mini gun to shoot the basecoat back over the chips and such just do it basically the same way as using and airbrush? just over the affected area with some feathering, not the whole panel right?

man,I hope you have a high patience level!

I think you'll need to (carefully) wetsand the areas you believe to be thin.

Thats touchy work on a color like that.

I wish you all the luck in the TGO world brother!!

Car does look damn sweet though!
You have done an amazing job on it.

If you have seen the car and what i have done then you understand the amount of patience i have. i really think i have to thank the girlfriend and not the car for that one though, i less inclined to want to kill the car. j/k.

yaeh i got plenty of patience i just wanted to make sure you could cut thin clear, just trying to fix the mistakes made, and keep myself from making a **** load more

On the clear... dry doesn't necessarily mean thin and if it was a high solids clear it should have enough build to be able to sand it smooth. Which is what I think you should do. While you could just scuff it and shoot on a couple more coats, you don't really want to break thru the new clear into the old, trying to sand it smooth aterwards. So smooth it out before you redo it.
Glass chips and scratches ... I'd try sanding it as smooth as possible without going thru the clear. If there are still some deep gouges where the base coat, or even primer shows thru, you might be able to brush touch them, sand them smooth and just clear over it. If there aren't a million places and it's just in the clear you can brush a little clear into the scratch and let it dry good before you wetsand it. Like using clear for filler. Then either clear the panel again or give it a buff and see what it looks like.
For the dings in the door, you might try a paintless dent repair company. Let them massage the dings out and then reclear it with the rest of the car.
Good luck.

Re: Please help need ideas from painters

yeah, the chips and straches are down into the primer, some even feel like they got into the filler under the primer. it is deep, so it will need to be painted. i have quite a few so i am going to try to touch them up, if i cant then i will have to redo both quarters with bc. im hoping that i can just hit them with some bc and then reclear the car that it will come out.

also got to figure out what to do about my stripes. i layed white down first, then let it dry, taped off, sprayed the bc, unmasked and cleared. i can feel the taped lines, they are still pretty high so im hoping that some more clear over the stripes will fix that to.
