Does anyone have 1st hand experience with this part?
I posted in the other 'aero' spoiler thread; but, does anyone have any experience with the Hawks piece specifically? I put my name in already for the group buy (in the Group Buy forum). Because the logistics of getting a factory on here in the North East, are dismal, and switching to a different spoiler type isnt really a direction I want to go in.
Ive built T-buckets and fixed boats, so glass work doesn't bother me. As long as this thing vaguely fits my car to begin with, Im good.
Does anyone have one of these fiberglass spoilers on their car already?
I have one from hawks on my car, I didn't put it on myself had a shop do it as part of an insurance claim from my car being vandalized. Anyway the thing looks great 1000 times better then my old cracked rubber one. I've had it for I guess about 3yrs now and is holding up great. If i remember correctly it was just a scuff and spray the gel coat was pretty close to where it needed to be. I don't have any pictures right now but could probably get some up by sunday. BTW Bruce and everyone at Hawks third gen was very helpful
Honestly, I think the piece is great, I got the spoiler, there was a nick, it looked like a fingernail impression that I had to butter in, it looked like it happened in shipping, but even if I did not fix it I think no one would have noticed. I simply scuffed the spoiler, put some paint on it and put it on my car. The holes lined up with my holes in my hatch. One thing I will mention is that my original spoiler lined up exactly like this spoiler on my hatch. The center stop light for some reason did not line up with the holes in my hatch, it is exactly like the hawks spoiler...
When I need another I will definately be buying another one... No question I highly recommend it... Definately better than the OE Rubber one...

John, thanks for the reassurance. Ive done a LOT with fiberglass and some stuff is just junk, I would have been better off making a mold with lost foam; so I genuinely appreciate the quality of this.
I heard from Steven @ Hawks and theyre getting the spoilers in within a week.
i agree, i think hawks will be the best choice, concidering all the crap talked about north country,
we still need a few more people to join in on the group buy.
come on, 50. 00 off!!!!
The one I got from ram air hoods (use to be a sponsor) fit well. It was slightly different from the factory as the leading edge was squared off. After 4 years I discovered in the curve where the "arm" meets the spoiler wing they didn't get rid of all the pealpry (plastic you use so it will release from the mold before they gel-coated it. (assuming they did it in this order otherwise I don't know how plastic got under the gel-coat). The Gel-coat has turned loose there so I need to knock it lose and fill it in there. I never got around to painting it but it looked beter in primer than the factory one ever did in paint. You can't go wrong, and I think Hawlks will do it better than mine. All the fiberglass ones I've seen look like they were made by the same company as they had the same differences from the factory one.
Is hawlks building these are just getting a group order from a manufacture? Heading over I may have to look into the group buy.
Their picture looks like the same one ram-air hoods used and what was it gt fiberglass (one of the first selling this product) which is now north country, had this same picture. I wish it was easier to find out who actually makes the parts we buy.
one thing to consider is that the original primer/gel-coat may not be suitable for outdoor use. I know that sometimes the epoxies that are used in making fiberglass parts are not UV stable, nor are primers in some cases and may be the reason for your pealing.

I put an extra coat of primer on it when I got it since I was going to wait until I repaint the whole car. I did think about that, but the spot is not in direct sunlight so if it was going to be the issue it would of been at the top not bottom. But no it only cracked and pealed right in the corner there and the peal-ply didn't extend far beyond that point. They just missed the a piece of the peal-ply, I guess you can expect that to occur everyonce and a while with hand laied fiberglass. At least its easy to fix fiberglass where the factory one was impossible.
Just to be clear mine wasn't from Hawks so don't let it effect your choice on their product.

I think what you are talking about is called "Flash" it is the excess material that comes out between mold sections. It is very common in Metal castings...

Take a look at these links, peal-ply this is what I am talking about, its the plastic used to press hand laied fiberglass to get out the excess resin. This is what was under the paint/gel-coat in the corner where it broke loose.
Sorry to hijack your thread NatesZ/28, but I guess it is something to consider with any fiberglass part.

I think its a brand name, but alot of time its used as a generic name. I only knew what it is from laying fiberglass on fiberglass airplanes. You use it when you vacuum bag it or if you need to press it onto a form or mold.
Mold releasing agents can contaminate a LOT of stuff. I think there is silicone in it. I casted(?) a trim piece for my friends nova and painted it to match, the next day I painted a motorcycle tank for my neighbor and the paint had all sorts of terminal issues. I tore my compressor apart, threw out the air hose (thought I got some light machine oil in it), bought dessicant traps, drained the tank...UGH
ANYWAY...Aviator needs a new spoiler we have 7 people on the group buy. John I think you need a spare as well. :-D
Cmon guys open your hearts and your wallets
John, does this spoiler have a gelcoat or a primer on it?
Not a great picture but this is the spoiler I bought from Hawks a little more then 3yrs? ago. It has held up great the car was my daily driver up until last year.
