Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?

well, i havent found too many out of the ordinary things done to my camaro, the wiring uner the dash is...to be desired lol its not destroyed but its definitely a rats nest...

and this one was me, totally unintentional mind you... i bought a high rise spoiler for my 89 which had the small lip spoiler, and i let my friend tape everything up for me because i caught mono at the time which made EVERYTHING hard, even sitting upright so all i wanted to do was spray it, so he decided to do this stoned... and make an art project out of it lol i had the holes for the side pieces filled and sanded from the day before and he taped it off to make like a ghetto primer racing stripe like you would see on the rumble bee dodge trucks, i dragged my butt outside when he said he was done and i was oblivious to his taping job, so i just rattle canned it with the primer, after peeling the paint the next morning i was like "youve got to be f-ing kidding me....im gonna look like a tool who did this crap on purpose" no joke he comes out 2 mins later and goes "DAMN! that looks awesome!"

ill take a pic of it tomorrow, i need to shoot this thing soon so i dont feel so retarded about my "racing stripes" that blend with the primered hatch lol

That actually reminds me of another ghetto issue which caused most of my grief from the beginning... the PO got the bright idea to remove the smog pump but wasn't bright enough to realize how much that pissed off the ECU. The car has a mechanical fuel pump so I rectified the issue with an Edelbrock carb and a 1975 style distributor. Some people just should not be allowed to monkey under the hood.

UUUUHHHH.
I dont have my smog pump, smog diverter valves, or cat and my IROC runs perfect. No issues with the ECM. No trouble codes, no hesistation, no surges, and no SES light. So with that said, I think your not being very truthful. Maby something else is causing the ECM to act funny but I seriously dont think having no smog pump would cause the ECM to act funny.

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?

Well, my best friend has an 89 firebird v6 multiport hardtop 2xx,xxx miles.. He beats the crap out of the poor thing. Well what happened recently was his intake rotted out so bad he blew a hole through it. Yes the intake itself. Since we are both young and strapped for cash we just drilled the hole out a little to make it nice and perfectly round, taped it and put a bolt in it. We did it like 4 months ago and it's still working.

As far as ghetto things found on my car..well where do I begin? haha. Thing is still in the midst of what I call it's "trailer park recovery process", but when I bought it, the only thing the cooling fan needed was a new relay, yet they hotwired it to a switch on the plastic panel under the gauges. The drivers side needed a new headlamp motor. What did they do instead? they pulled the metal wiring out of the old motor, and I had to pull/twist that up to pull that headlight up. Also suffered from the infamous sagging doors, and a bad door latch on the drivers side door.

But perhaps the best part was the chrome cobra shift ****. I'm all for a bit of tacky interior cosmetics, but that was too much for me, lol. Luckily I have a Hurst shifter in it's place now, as well as some fuzzy mirror dice for good measure

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?

Idiot PO went around the engine bay clipping and crimping sensors "my guess trying to find out witch one turned of the SES " and also put a metal elbow on one of the hoses that goes to the heater core . BTW he also put duct tape to hold up the head liner " its in the trash now "

well the 87 iroc i bought off of craigslist, the PO left the distributor loose and had hacked up the fan wiring and just ran a wire from the fuse panel ( just stuffed the end of the wire into a slot) to the fans

Maybe I worded that the wrong way. It wasn't the ECM that was acting funny, it was simply the way the car ran. I also should have added that the PO took it to a shop to have the rochester 4bbl re-tuned after removing the smog equipment. The mechanic there had told him that it would run rich after the pump was removed. This was what the PO had told me when he was playing salesman. ($600 for a solid 3rd gen with minor issues... I was sold when I looked at it.) Maybe it was the idiot mechanic that screwed it all up. I'm not sure. Either way, its fixed now and running great.

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?

Got to blame this one on the factory. Took out my right kick panel and the Q-pad was still over the hole for the lower hinge bolts. Pulled back the pad and there were no bolts in the lower hinge. The only one in it was the one from the outside. Not even a scratch on the inside where the washer and bolt would be. Couldn't believe the door worked so well. Still haven't changed any bushings or anything on right door. My neighbor said the poor PO had no friends cause the door worked so well, never used!

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?

well my 88 gta headlight motor wiring was all rigged up cause the relay went bad and the drivers side headlamp wouldnt raise. they spliced the wires going to the pass side to make it work fan wiring all messed up just to make it work, and an very hacked in aftermarket security system. then my 87 was in some type of gang war and it has over 15 bullet holes in the back of it..also the hatch motor was rigged with a screwdriver to make it latch.

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?

Needed to change my Throttle Cable. Someone used it instead of a Grommet to pass wires/Tubes through the firewall. They simply drilled a hole in the bracket that attaches it to the firewall and fed them through. I kinda see the logic. That's one less hole in the dash, but there was plenty of room in existing holes. Anyhow, i thought you guys would appreciate that..............

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?

my 89 gta has flat sheet metal for a headliner (not me).
it had the fans wired to ignition on, the coil wired to a switch, the fuel pump wired to a switch,
the headlights locked in the up position with wire and bs bolt on battery terminals.
i got it as a result of a high speed police chase, its a L98 gta, so it was a long chase then the battery shorted to ground,
it wasn't bolted down.

my 90 caprice cop had its throttle cable held together with a butt connector.

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?

87 Z28 305.The PO smashed the rear hatch window and when they put in a new hatch they cut the wires on the new rear hatch that had rear defrost because the car didn't have rear defrost, not knowing this untill after I bought the rear defrost wires and switch. The PO also installed POS fan switch that he mounts near the battery because the fan switch went out. "Rebuilt the Carb" but forgot to put all of the parts back on, so I had to buy a new carb. "Rewired" under the dash witch Fed it all up, and is now shorting out.

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?

Well, to start my 91 1500, instead of just removing the speakers and replacing them he cut out the wire harness to the deck and manually wired the deck to 6X9's and for the blower motor he cut out the molding and used epoxy to put it back. For my 84 camaro when in idle the cab would get exhaust and extreme heat. When I took out the center console area to clean, the dumb***, instead of just removing the 4 bolts that hold the lower boot in place, just took a knife and cut out the rubber. It's a good idea to do a "deep" clean, cause my shifter wasn't bolted down right

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?

I have used shoe strings, tape, garbage ties, and finally silicon to hold the headlights (dont have baskets) in place. At night one light points at the trees, and the other points to wherever it wants. I also took my hood latch mech. out and drilled holes threw hood for pins, but messed up so I banged the holes out to fit the pins looks like crap. All my own remedys for a fender bender.
Drivers door panel completely gone, lost it during window motor replacement. Which I held motor in place with alot of 12 awg wire, but attempted to seal draft with tape and thick mill. plastic. Finaly broke DR. door handle tab that connects to rod quick fix with braided metal wire little u bracket a plate and a few nuts and screws, zip ties, and even a random spring to provide tension. Jumper cable for bad A/C switch (7 dollar peice) and pulled hatch motor threaded it to right height reinstalled, now its a "slammer". Im now in the process of redoing everything . What was I thinking? I dont even want to talk about the 1200 watt amp install I had in trunk, pulled amp drove to the store 0 awg power wire jumped around and grounded out. The car was like polterguist lights, guages, engine, all went crazy stalling the car. I new instantly what bone head thing I had done. Im sure theres more thats good for now.

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?

Went to install new stereo this weekend and found out how much fun the PO had wiring up the old one. Everything was cut/hardwired and taped together, with mismatching speaker wire (2 of the speakers were powered by cut extension cord or something) and he had the front and rear speakers mixed, and the front left and right speakers mixed...

Some people should never be allowed to touch a car.

I could go on for days, but basically the ripping out of all smog and a/c components on an otherwise stock car, as well as removing the electronic carb and dist. (again, the car is otherwise stock). Not to mention the horrible primer job that left overspray on ALL exterior glass and lighting. And wheels. And tires. And the primer was applied over pinstriping.

PO's buddy: "here..." (hands him a 3 inch x 1/2 inch monster wood screw and cordless drill)
PO: "sweeeet its nice and tight now that i drilled it through the mirror into the door!"

It never fails to blow my mind when I see people dumb enough to spray primer all over their car without giving much of a crap to prep it first. I saw an 86 Trans Am (total white trash beater) with the front end covered in primer with half of the front windshield covered as well. The car also had almost no interior, as well as no carpet and you were able to see the rot holes you were sitting on top of... yep it was someone's DD.

There was also an 84 Trans Am that I almost bought (fortunately I didn't, even at $1000), where the front turn signals were primered-over as well as almost all of the trim and pin striping (zero prep work, not even masking). This car was also smacked in its driver's door in a parking lot or something and the owner slapped an inch of bondo on it, covering about 70% of the door (he had a clean door sitting in his garage too). He didn't even bother covering his driveway cause you were able to see dried globs of bondo on it.

Some people.....

I once had side exit exhaust out the passeger side (getto nascar boom tube), It was loud as hell. The resinating drone killed some of my hearing I sure of it. Now the pipe runs all the way to the back.

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?

well the one I bought the PO had moved the electric fan to the front of the radiator and cut the hood latch supports to make room then put in a beat up flex fan on the water pump then the shroud didnt hold the radiator in place so he used wire coat hangers through the cooling fins. He said the starter was bad got under the car and he had left the wire loose almost to the point of falling off the rearview mirror has 3 mounts glued together and more than half the car is covered in bondo and flaking paint. nuff said shes getting some love.

Thats what i run lol but its headers to 3in Y to 2 inline chambered exhaust mufflers (60's style) to a dual slash tip in front of the passenger tire... it idles quiet as stock and opens right up after 3K to a clean but nasty nascar sound... none of that "airy" sound as i like to call it.

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?

Great stuff guys
Mine only a few: the PO said he had the engine rebuilt along with the tranie, well the vacuum lines were all wrong, the cut the cable to the cruse and put in some kind of electrical cruse module( that did not work) using crimp splices, and wile I was trying to figure out why the cooling fan would not run found all the wire between the firewall and the engine were spliced to gether by twisting the wires to gether and putting electrical tape over them ( no wondr the car did not like the rain). The ground wire to the ECM had been made longer by using the same wire and tape and ran it to the engine instead pf the bolt where it had been pulled out of. Still have issues with the cooing fan and the a/c clutch but hopefuly that will be fixed when I swap the engine.

The engine rebuild the guy did well let's just say it's not the original engine and has oil leaks around the main seal and the oil filter he had gone in a duck taped the around the oil filter to make it stop/leak less. And had plugged the hole in the dust cover so the oil would not come out the hole ( boy did I need a shower when I opened the dust cover to look at the fly wheel because of a strainge noise for that area)

I do remember reading somewhere in the bowels of TGO that when the air diverter solenoid is active the ECM will offset the O2 sensor voltage to compensate for the extra air in the exhaust. Maybe someone more adept in this category can chime in.

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?

Thank you, I havnt checked back to this post. I appreciate the win, and take it with honor. I due however feel bad know for all the things I have done to my car. Seeing that it has lasted this long with my abuse, and has givin me less problems than newer cars that I own, I have made it my goal to try and make things right. Slowly but for surely.
I also ran it for a entire TX summer with the fan not workin instead of fixing it I use to over heat it 2, 3 times a day. I remember one time I popped the hood and my overflow tank had swelled to almost twice its size. I got so tired of the fan not working that it over heated in traffic, I was on the HWY with it floored and it wouldnt go over 50MPH and the engine sounded like a pissed off deisel I didnt even care. Next morning before work put water in it and took off no problems. Thats ****in bad *** this car will not die. That and all other issues are being delt with.
Also I love how almost all the comments on here are the last "PO", or my idiot friend did this. Take some credit for yourself and that your car can still survive, despite temporary fixs, or just stupidity. Thats why I think my cars so great because it worked for me, even when I didnt have time or money to fix it the right way, loyal to its owner like a dog.

I hear you there. Unfortunately, for some of us, fixing the PO's mistakes means going backwards and taking everything apart down to the bare body and putting everything back together again... She had too many problems left behind, so she's getting a major overhaul to get back to normal.

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?

I also removed my smog system. I took out the diverter valve and unhooked the belt from the pump. I took the car to a welding shop and had them cut the AIR tubes off the headers and weld them up, as well as the pipe that runs to the cat. The only thing I haven't done is remove the pump itself because I have yet to get under the car and make sure it is proerly removed on account that one of the bolts goes straight through the block to an oil passage.

Car runs no different than it did before, AND it is MUCH easier to work around the engine bay now. I can change all 8 spark plugs from up top with shorty headers!
