Vandalized 82 Trans Am Project

I came across this beauty a month and a half ago, I bought it so dirt cheap it was almost free. it's a 1982 Trans Am, I checked the VIN, it is in fact a T/A and not a Firebird, when I got it it had no engine tranny driveshaft yada yada. the wiring needs replaced as well as the paint.

It's my dream car and a heck of a project.

On it's own, it would have taken me a long time, and alot of money to fix it up. but just a few days ago some vandals came along and smashed the front and rear windshields, and the drivers side headlight assembly.

does anyone have an estimate on how much it will cost me for the front and/or back windshields?

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the support.

And I live in huron south dakota, the zip code is 57350 if that helps for a little bit faster location lookup.

KnottyBuoyz, what happened when you were vandalized?

rdhanded2, what all parts do you have? I'm missing some interior trim panels from the inside that i haven't been able to find anywhere yet.

Re: Vandalized 82 Trans Am Project

You'll probably need to replace the whole back hatch. Front glass looked like it needed to be replaced anyway, as cloudy as it was.

Either way, it sucks that happened to you. Check out http://earlythirdgen.com/forums and I'll bet they'd be able to help with the pieces you need for the whole project.

all of the glass was actually in pristine condition, they took a sledge hammer to the front 3 times, thus the cloudy look. ouch, entire rear hatch, well that happens sometimes I guess. and Thank you for the link, I will check it out when I have a little more free time, I'm 18 staying home for a year saving for college working 40 hours a week and fixing up my TA so yeah, busy schedule. Work then shop, then sleep. lol

Bradley, maybe we can work out something with some of the other stuff, prolly not the glass sadly tho, it'd be too iffy to ship it that far. I hate living in the center of the country...

Re: Vandalized 82 Trans Am Project

We have hatch glass available but you would be better off finding something closer to home so you don't have to pay shipping. (We are just south of Chicago.) However, we've got tons of other parts available with more coming in all the time so I'm sure we'll have something you need available on our site.

my parents and I are willing to travel to pick up the glass, I'm guessing with a 14 hour drive or so of Huron South Dakota. I will make sure to check out the site, thanks!

get this...and it'll make you cringe...I apologize for that,
a few weeks ago, the cop that wrong up the incident report said that there were 31 vandalisms in one weekend, ALL were vehicles, ALL were breaking either side or front windows...well, on mine the passenger window is broken, I have the glass, and the drivers window was down.

I think that they were trying to get into my dad's storage shed, AKA "the Shop" and they couldn't...I have the Trans Am by the door, sitting by a 1951 and 1950 sedans. the Trans was under a car cover, and 50's weren't. they were prolly mad and took it out on the car with the cover...they didn't touch ANYTHING else. over the last few weeks before the incident the cover kept "coming off." thing is, it's got nice elastic around the entire outside of it...I doubt it was the wind. I think that they knew exactly what was sitting there and just wanted to give us more of a bad day.

This town's crime rate is finally going down now because they hired quite a few more officers onto the force, before they were operating at minimum staff.

I hope that they catch them soon. it's rediculous.

My sister goes there. I don't have any glass either, i could go to a yard for you but thats $$ too. Just call up some "local" yards and see what they got. The yard i go to is completely sh*t, cars packed on each other and sliding off lol. HOWEVER, they must have 15+ f bodies out there!

oh sweet, what town do you live in? cuz you're prolly the closest one so far that would have it/them. I'm considering having it shipped from a place, but it's risky, i've seen how UPS treats it's packages...

I hope you get your project back on track Jerodo. Seems like there's some fella's here who are willing to help out!

I was near finished a '70 340 Six Pack 4 Speed Plymouth Duster build. All glass panels 'cept for the roof & rear quarters including the bumpers. 6 Point roll cage etc. The day before it was to go into the paint shop someone took a tire iron to the glass, ALL OF IT, windows & skins. They broke every piece. I was away working on a ship at the time and didn't find out till two weeks later. They never found out who did it.

Nope. About a week later they got the wheels & Hurst Ram Rod. I parted out the car and sold it off. (Insurance write-off). The engine went into a "cracker box" race boat.

I feel your pain, someone smashed out my rear glass and ripped my spoiler off a few years ago. Luckily the insurance replaced the glass and paid for a fiberglass wrap around spoiler from Hawk's. Good luck with your project.

Does anyone know where I could find a parts car at? there's alot of random things missing that it'd be nice to just have a parts car to yank the stuff out of.

Re: Vandalized 82 Trans Am Project

You should have no problem finding a 3rd gen base car with rotted quarters and toasted engine or tranny in the $200-300 range. I just crushed a couple rot boxes recently and without interiors, hoods and hatches you will get about $160 at the scrap yard. Buy one as cheap as possible, grab everything that is good and recoup a bunch at the yard. Then you will have peanuts into a ton of parts.

Take a ride around your area. If you see one that looks to have been parked a while, go knock on the door.

Re: Vandalized 82 Trans Am Project

I found 8 rear hatches for you at a junkyard in Garretson, SD. 2 are non-heat(no defrost) and the other 6 are heated(defrost). For some reason the heated ones are cheaper and are going for $75 each.

Just go to car-part.com then put in your car or the one closest to yours (like Firebird instead of Trans Am). Then put in the part which is Glass, back and your state. Click search. That web page search a decent amount of junkyards.
