NEED HELP WITH PAINT TYPE!

So as my desperate cry of a title tells you im doing paint my self and i need some help trying to figure out what kind of paint to use. i was hoping to go with house of kolor products but it seems like the package is going to be just over my price limit. Does anyone know who makes the summit brand paint? and is their acrylic urethane the way to go? just need some direction as to what paint is going to give me everything i need as far as longevity, flexibility, and life. Seems like all the advertisements for each type of paint say the same things.

Also, do i need a flex agent for primer/paint for the front and rear bumpers? thanks

Re: NEED HELP WITH PAINT TYPE!

the flex agents are for painting a removed bumper, it allows u to install it after painting it. there is only a brief window before its no longer as flexable.

somebody on here said they used the auto zone paints with good results. nason is also cheap. they are availible in single and dual stages.

Re: NEED HELP WITH PAINT TYPE!

Nason, Limco are just the cheap shopline paints...one is PPG the other is Dupont; I forget which is which...Theyre both okay. Heres the thing, if youre painting red, gold, or black...go with a more expensive brand (Dupont, PPG, RM, or Napa's TECbase) Napa's paint is Sherwin Williams...they make great stuff.

SPEND YOUR MONEY on the basecoat!!!!!!! There are plenty of Value Priced clearcoats for your base in any brand you choose. Southern PolyUrethanes makes a clear coat that works with any brand...and its probably the best clear I have EVER used.

House of Krylon basecoats rock..BUT their clearcoats are fussy. I dont like em.

Its EASIER to do base/clear than 'Single Stage' Urethane...because you can fix, cut and buff Base/Clear. With single Stage...there isnt a real margin to play with...what you spray is basically what you have.

I bought napa crossfire (now Acme FinishONE) with their 15420 clear. Base was 257/gal and clear was 100 bucks. (this doesnt include the gallon of thinner and the primer and catalyst).

All in all, if your budget is less than say 600 bucks...you need to re evaluate your situation. You need a LOT of sandpaper, spraygun, compressor, respirator, buffing compound, rotary buffer, cutting pad, polishing compound, polishing pad...oh yeah and the primer and the paint.

Re: NEED HELP WITH PAINT TYPE!

ive got a few spray guns a compressor and all that garbage my car is about ready for paint. what about this stuff? http://www.paintforcars.com/kits_sta...pleredmet.html

come in a kit, looks like everything should work well together. im doing a two tone paint job so id need another quart of a different color plus im going to need a primer/sealer since im do a tiny bit of bondo and im down to metal in a few spots. i saw this website earlier then tried to pick some stuff out from summit to maybe make a kit like this it was a little cheaper plus ive got some discouts from other stuff i bought but this place looks a little more dependale.

Re: NEED HELP WITH PAINT TYPE!

If you search under my name, you'll see pics of my 87 TA from bare metal, to epoxy primer, and then base clear. I suggest you go to an epoxy sealer, filler primer (if you need it) and sand away. MOST epoxy primers dont have good filler properties; BUT you can buy a high build primer. If you cover all your bodywork with epoxy, rust wont ever be an issue.

Check out autobody101.com for reviews of different paint systems; other people used that system with good results however
