if your anything like my room mate then you'll flip your car. now would you rather drive upside down with the t-top or a hard top? i think you'd get less road rash on your scalp with a hardtop, even if both cave in. i love my t tops but i'm trying to help the orignal poster.
I bought a hardtop because I'm impatient, and couldn't find a t-top car. Had I waited just a little longer I could have had a MINT 84 Z/28, with t-tops, for the money I spent on buying my car, and getting it roadworty. If you really want a t-top, dont let anyone talk you out of it!
hey not to start a fight here but I will post a few things that I have heard (probably read somewhere but I don't have the factual evidence handy).
#1. the c5 corvette was initially designed to be a convertible so saying they made the z06 with a hardtop because the convertible wouldn't be stiff enough doesn't make sense as to my knowledge there is no additional bracing added to a convertible (remember that the 3rd gen camaros and the c4 vette convertibles were afterthoughts not part of initial designs) that is a whole different animal as far as I know.
#2. as far as people saying they have a 1992 hardtop that doesn't rattle and a 1987 t-top that does or vice versa. You are talking about different cars here because (again no factual evidence but from what I have read on this board) starting in 91 or 92 they began gluing the body together as well as welding it so any 91 or 92 car will rattle less than earlier cars. I can somewhat confirm this as I had a friend in high school who had a 1987 gta hardtop and that thing rattled more than any car I have ever been in. Also as far as structural integrity I am sure (have no idea but it makes sense) that the hardtop would be a lot stiffer but who cares I am sure this is just a fun car for him.
#3. As far as the original topic (hardtop or t-top) a couple of points here I don't think he is racing the car. I don't think body flex is a big deal to him. So to go along with other posters here wait for your IROC 5-speed t-top car, it will show up eventually and you will be really upset if you find it in a year after you have already bought the hardtop.
Also another point to the original poster here, but what is so important about an IROC. You can take a '89 RS and make it look just like an IROC by changing the hood, painting the headlight buckets black and adding some stickers the only one that would know it's not a true IROC is you. The only difference might be when you try to sell it (if your honest and hopefully you are). Also you have all the parts there to make your t-top a 5-speed, just a thought don't know if you would want to do that or if you could handle a job like that but it would probably be cheaper.
this helped a lot, now i feel like im actually leaning towards hardtop more, but the reason i want the iroc is mainly for the package. I would like to have a car that is somewhat capable of ripping up some pavement and corner carving every once and a while.
There is no difference in the structural integrity on hardtop vs ttop. Take the headliner off of a hardtop car and you will see.
Oh yes there is. In 91-92 you could only get a Z28 TPI 350 car as a hard top. The tourqe on the 350 went up so they did not put any 350's in T-Top bodies in these 2 years because they twist to much. I kind of wanted a t-Top car myself when I bought mine. But, I also wanted a 91-92 350 Z28, so I had to settle for a hardtop. Convertables didnt get 350's either.
I love the t-top camaros, but know deep down inside i should get a hardtop one, just please give me reasons to stay away from t-top that i might not know, to convince me to get hardtop lol. i like the pro tour set up on cars, so dont know if it would hurt t-top or not.
It's all in what you want. For just cruisin around pickin up chicks, fix that easy project car you got sittin there and go fill up the car. If you want to go road racing or gonna do some bracket racing get a hardtop 350 car. I've had both and if I was gonna ever buy another it would be a hardtop car. I hate dealing with rust and I hate leaks. THe hardtops will leak a slight bit if the seals are a little worn, but you won't be soaked if you get caught in a thunderstorm. Where you from anyway?
1. I'd avoid any car that has rear quarter damage. That car looks like a bit of a piece. If you get it for real cheap, save it.
2. Hard top cars are lighter, stiffer, and don't leak. I'll admit I wish I had t-tops sometimes, but for what I want my car to do it needs to be a hardtop.
If you're not racing it and it's a cruiser... go find a t-top car. You can add sfc's to a t-top car nd it will be more than stiff enough to have a lot of fun with.

did they make any 91-92 z28's with 350 hardtop, manuals? and are the package on those the same as IROC?

i owned that car in your talking about and just sold it few days ago, but im starting my search now and fell sooo comfortable with hard top now, since ive seen the ups and downs. i gave all the money i made off the 2 cars to my wife to trade for double the money when tax returns come in (if obama dont take that from us too of course!). i love the guys '91 z28 that is down in georgia but dont know if it will be here when i rdy to buy.
Cats! Cats! Cats! I guess you will be watching the game today.....
No 350 Z28 Thirdgens came with manuals.....
yes sir i will be watching the cats and screaming at the tv and all that fun stuff. i bleed blue, its something i think UK hospital did to me when i was born. lol
I remember when I had my Acura it had a sun roof and I thought that was so cool. After awhile I didn't even use it,, sometimes it was just annoying having the sun (california sunshine) beating down on me while I drive!!! It just looks cool to have them.
I think our cars did make the t-top popular. Most people affiliate them with t-top. If thats what you really want then go for it. I sometimes wish I had got them just to say I do!
I've always had T-Top cars or convertibles. All my 3rd gens have had t-tops, my stang was a vert. The 70' is a hardtop but that was really my only choice lol. My 86' has t-tops and I love them, always have. Being a little older now I don't take them out as often but when I do, I love it. They were never in when I was younger unless it was raining or I wasn't in it. As far as the hardtop being more solid, like said, SFC's make a world of difference, and my 87' had a cage too so it wasn't a problem lol.
