spray painting door jams? good or bad?

is it a good idea to spray paint your door jams with the proper prep work? is the a rattle can worthy enough to do the task at hand? have you experienced fellows accomplished such a thing with good results?

Re: spray painting door jams? good or bad?

Ive spray painted an entire car and couldnt tell. The key is the prep work. Make sure you prime the door jams, wetsand the primer, then take your time spraying the jams and clear it too so it has a nice finish. If you have a mini buffer, you can even wetsand any dust or orange peel out too.

Re: spray painting door jams? good or bad?

So you want to rattle can your jams? are you doing the body door jams, and door jams or? what color do you want your jams? are you going to have a paint supplies store fill rattle cans with your color or try finding a close color match at a local store?

Dont get the cheap paint. Ive had excellent results with duplicolor paint. Just make sure you get the correct color.

Re: spray painting door jams? good or bad?

For what you would spend in rattle can paint you could get a maaco paint job done.Do all the prep work then have them paint it for you and have a better looking car.

1 question. why would you paint your jams with a rattle can? to save money? it is the worst you can do to a car... if any 1 want to quotes me and say "i've done it and it looks fine" well i just have 1 thing to say. wait till you spill a harsh substance or liquid on it and you will see how good spray paint is.....

save some money and use the right stuff since you are still taking your time to do the prep work......

the only good rattle paint is the one that they actually mix on a auto painting supply store and pressurize it into a can..

iv spray painted my whole front bumper of my car from the lights forward. i took 2 weekends sanding and another painting and wet sanding. its been on the car for well over 6 months and besides from a few scratches where i hit a curb it looks amazing. just as good as the rest of the car. If you prep it right and use spray paint that is made for metal not plastic. it will look good. iv spilled a lot of stuff on it from working on the motor and actually have even spilled paint thinner on it. i wiped it all off as quickly as possible. id say go for it man,.

well I Personally wouldn't rely on any paint that comes out of a rattle can to do body parts or even jams but hey maybe cuz i got the tools and the experience to use the right stuff ......

but if any of you guys did it and are happy with Your results

Re: spray painting door jams? good or bad?

if your changing the body color of the car then door jams need painted, now taping some stuff off and using a pray paint sounds better than taking half your interior out to paint that part. and a lot of people doors drag a little so it will get scratched up so its easy to do a touch up. you dont really ever see your door jams unless your really looking at the car, from a ten foot distance youd never tell the difference if the color was pretty close. i say go for it.

i know but i was saying it doesn't have the additives that a sealed can of clear has since the rattle can is pressurized if they left it in a rattle can the nozzle would gum/jam up....

Re: spray painting door jams? good or bad?

i wouldnt even clear it. your gonna paint it 64387943204340 times anyway and that clear is really crappy. depends on the brand you buy but some of them will change your color a little and it runs quicker than hell. id just paint it and leave it then when it gets messed up you aint gotta sand it down and clear and wet send and blah blah blah

Re: spray painting door jams? good or bad?

guess it was just the type i used. i always spray on cardboard or something before i spray to see what the pressure and what they spray pattern is and it came out a little yellowish. on my light blue paint it made it have a hue of green. idk. bad experience i guess. best to luck

Cardboard would absorb some of the paint, allowing the brown of the cardboard to tint the color your spraying on it.

Go spray white on cardboard & you'll get a "mud" color, until the first coat dries & you put more layers on.

Re: spray painting door jams? good or bad?

I sprayed my door jams black and it came out looking great. Still going strong after 10 years. A good brand of spray paint is just as good as most things a professional uses. I think I only used one can to cover both jams and inner door frames.
