Pewter colored Z/28???

Was wondering if anyone has any info on these colored 1984 Camaros. I've only seen one or two around after I got mine. I have also seen a magazine ad in German for one with this paint color. I worked at a large Chevy dealer back in '84 and never saw one come in off the transporeter like this. I never saw any ordering info for this color either.

I bought mine with the intention of painting it silver (ie 2010 Camaro or 2006 Monte/Impala) but was told it was a "special edition" here in North America. Sounds like GM was selling off the ones that didn't sell in Europe. BTW, it's a Canadian car.

If it's a special paint job, I'll keep the color when I repair one rust spot and parking lot dings. If it's nothing special, then I'll paint it the color I want.

Paint codes on plaque are 15U/15L

Thanks in advance for any info

Welcome to TGO. For what it's worth, pewter is a color never listed for our cars. In 83 and 84, only silver (code 15) is mentioned in the Camaro White Book.

Yes, there were plenty of Berlinetta's and Base coupes that came through our dealership in what was called a "Chgampagne" color by the staff, but that wasn't even close to the paint on this Z/28. Your color was not offered on the Z/28 in 1983/4, only the Base and Berlinetta

Thanks, James. THat is why I am trying to find out about this particular color. I have seen two others (one on the road and one in the Auto Trader). I have also seen the ads GM put out overseas. Here in Canada, we did not have Silver offered in the Z/28.

Note... Even if not the original paint, it is the original color since the floorboards, behind the dash, firewall, underside, etc. (ie places that are not painted with a complete paint job) are all the same color.

For what it's worth I think it looks pretty good as is, nice for it's age.

Re: Pewter colored Z/28???

I recently came across a 82-85 Parts and Illustration Catalog. EDIT: 1984 offers 15E (8310) and 15W (8311), both of which are Silver Sand Gray Met. In 83, there was a 15L, 15E, and 15W, all Silver Sand Irid. Odd that no 15U is mentioned.

More pics as requested...

Thanks for the comments, guys, it's appreciated. Not bad for a car that is on at least it's 3rd owner and was a probably a stolen/recovery at some point in it's life (yellow markings on a couple of underbody & suspension parts that normally don't wear out or need to be replaced).

As for the Berlinetta and Base Coupe, I remember they were a different shade. Almost a "Rosewood" type of shade with a little pink shading in the color. This one is sort of a sand/grey color depending on the lighting. It has me baffled, because I never saw one come in NEW back in those days other than the standard colors.

Also, the two others I saw had no stripes (exactly like mine). As mentioned, one was going the other way on a 4 lane highway and one was an online ad.

So? Is it worth keeping this color or should I just paint it 2006 Monte Carlo silver when I get the parking lot dings and the one silver-dollar-sized rust spot (near the spoiler on LR 1/4 panel) fixed?

Re: Pewter colored Z/28???

My ´89 RS coupe (engine code E) came in this colour.
The previous owner repainted in black but did not do the engine bay, just visible areas.

I´ll get the RPO code later today if that helps.
Car was manufactured for the european market. It has a km/mile speedometer. Not the US market mile/km one

@solitaire, my formula was the same, it was sold as an export version in switzerland (imported it from there to austria).

Check my edit above. BTW and for what it's worth, the Parts and Illustration Cat. doesn't mention export colors.

Re: Pewter colored Z/28???

...

I just noticed (I frequently forget this sad fact) that the list with RPO codes was removed from the glove compartment by one of the previous owners of the vehicle (most likely by the last owner as the space now hold a sticker for a Swiss ( ocean?) surf shop.

@ Ownor, The car was sold on US soil (US military base near Heidelberg, Germany), then sold to Switzerland where it changed hands once and was repainted by the new owner (most likely due to a front damage. Radiator, subframe, front are replaced, the hood is still original and unscathed) who sold it back to Germany where I purchased the car.

Re: Pewter colored Z/28???

Yeah, I have a feeling it was destined for Europe but was sold here. That would explain why I never saw any new ones or any of the order codes for that color. Some of the emissions was missing and appeared to be like that from the factory (no A.I.R.). Since Canadian requirements are different than the US, I guess it passed here at the time.

GM occasionally put export cars up for bids to dealers who wanted to sell the over-stock, the Iraqi Taxi Malibu's for one. I guess my dealer never picked up any at that time.

I think I will keep the color it is since it seems to be rare here in N.A. The digital pics are closer to the real color that is under the hood, tail-lights, carpet, etc. The film photos show it more as a brownish/sandy silver.

Once I get my my 383 finished and swap out the T5, I'll send it off for block sanding, ding repair, the silver dollar sized rust repaired and fresh paint.
