92 hood blister and rear wing question

92 hood blister and rear wing question
Can you just drill holes and mount the hood blisters that came on 91-92 Z-28's on an RS hood, or do they require a recessed hood like the 85-89 blisters?
Also what do i need to do to mount a 92 Z-28 rear wing to my car? Just drill holes in the right places?
Im not trying to make it into a "Z-28 clone", i just like the way the blisters and wing looks.

Not sure about the wing, but yes, the z28 blisters sit in a recession just like the louvers would for the IROC's.
Thats not stopping you from custom cutting out the hood and setting them in, but that is a butt load of work and would be easier to just go out and find a Z28 hood.

well youll have hole on your rear quarter panels if you swap to the 91-92 spoiler. also not sure if the holes are in different locations then with the older spoilers.

Its gonna get painted anyway..(its purple, from the factory...ewwwww) so holes will all be filled.
If they do sit in the recessions in the hood, is it the same hood as an 85-89 IROC hood, just with different blisters?

If you're close to St Louis I have the sheet metal portion of a hatch that had a high rise spoiler on it with the holes where you need them, you can have it for free. You'd have to paint it as it's bare metal right now.

Re: 92 hood blister and rear wing question
Actually the 91-92 hood blisters are larger then the 85-90 louvers and won't fit in the recessed areas. Below I have comparison pics of the 2 on an 86 Z28 hood. The 91-92 blisters were simply bolted to a stock(RS) hood.

Re: 92 hood blister and rear wing question
what firehawk is showing in his picture is the aftermarket blisters that hawks sells to go over the flat RS hood. I did not realize that they were larger than standard louvers.
Stock blisters do indeed go into the same recessed area as the IROC louvers. the hoods are exactly the same from 1985 to 1992

Re: 92 hood blister and rear wing question
The hood blisters I have are fiberglass and made by a fiberglass company(lost the receipt and forgot the name) and I was told they were molded from the stock 91-92 blisters. I will admit I'm not aware of the size of the Hawks blisters or the stock ones. These are actually 30 x 12.5 inches. If Hawks aftermarkets are larger, then why did they do that? Most places that make parts from fiberglass use a factory piece as a plug. It would be more time consuming to contruct a larger mold then to use a factory part.
All the pics I've looked at of the 91-92 Z28s shows the blisters sitting on the hood. The front lip doesn't look recessed(or partially recessed) within the hood. I have seen hoods in junkyards that were stock and had the holes showing where the blisters were. This was years ago before the Hawks blisters were available and 3rd gen parts were plentiful.
I had seen somewhere that GM used the RS(stock) hoods in 91-92 to reduce the cost of tooling seperate hoods and simply use the blisters as a bolt on option for the Z28s. Makes sense to me by just drilling several holes.
Only way would be for anyone with an original 91-92 Z to measure their blisters and either remove one to see if there is a recessed area under them.
I'm curious and I'd like to know if there is differences in sizes of blisters and the hood mounting.

Re: 92 hood blister and rear wing question
Nope, the hood is the same for both the louvers or the blisters, the blister just sits over the indentation, they should be molded on the bottom so they fit securely in the hood indentations.

I see what you mean now. The blisters are larger and the bottom is molded to fit within the recessed hood.

Exactly! They are larger period for looks. Its just personal preference for either the louvers or blisters, i have functional (modded) blisters on my camaro and love them.
